The RTX 4090 Founders Edition is already a large, three-slot card, but partner versions can be longer, thicker, and heavier. There is no evidence-based universal winner for cooling or build quality: compare the exact card’s dimensions, power needs, construction features, and test results rather than assuming all RTX 4090s are alike.
How large is the RTX 4090 Founders Edition?
NVIDIA lists the RTX 4090 Founders Edition at 304 × 137 × 61 mm, or three slots. Those reference specifications describe NVIDIA’s own Founders Edition or reference design, not every add-in card. Partner manufacturers build their own coolers and may use different dimensions and layouts. See NVIDIA’s RTX 4090 specifications.

Plan for more than card length
For the Founders Edition, NVIDIA asks builders to leave three unused expansion slots and notes that clearance equivalent to another unused slot typically improves airflow. It also calls for 36 mm of additional space for the power cable. Connector position and cable routing matter alongside the card’s listed dimensions; check the exact partner model and your case before buying. NVIDIA’s clearance guidance is for its reference design, so it should not substitute for a partner card’s measurements.

1Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errors2Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minute3Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problemsHow partner-card dimensions compare
Two examples show why the FE dimensions are not a reliable proxy for partner cards. MSI’s 2024 SUPRIM 24G datasheet lists its dimensions, while Tom’s Hardware reports measurements for its 2022 Gigabyte Gaming OC review sample. They are different models documented by different sources, not a controlled comparison.
#1 Best Overall
- 16,384 NVIDIA CUDA Cores
- Supports 4K 120Hz HDR, 8K 60Hz HDR and variable refresh rate as indicated in HDMI 2.1A
- New streaming multiprocessors: up to 2x power and power efficiency
- Fourth generation tensor cores: up to 2x AI power
- Third-generation RT cores: up to 2x ray tracing performance

For any card, verify length, width, thickness or slot count, and room for the power connector and cable bend. A large cooler can obstruct adjacent expansion slots, and a heavy card may call for support; the cited Gigabyte review sample included a support bracket, but package contents can depend on the exact model and revision.
Cooling design is not the same as cooling performance
Partner cards are not one cooler design. NVIDIA’s partner roundup describes differences such as fan size and fan-stop behavior, flow-through vents, thicker heatsinks, vapor chambers, and support features. Those descriptions tell you what a card is built with; they do not establish which model is quietest or coolest under comparable conditions. NVIDIA’s partner-card roundup is a feature overview, not a controlled thermal ranking.
What one Founders Edition test found
In TechSpot’s one-hour test of the Founders Edition in a closed-door ATX case at a 21°C room temperature, the card averaged 72°C GPU temperature and 84°C memory temperature. TechSpot reported 42 dBA and 415 W average GPU draw in that test. These are results for that review setup, not guarantees for other cases or a direct comparison with every partner model. TechSpot’s RTX 4090 Founders Edition review provides the test context.
When comparing reviews, check whether case, ambient temperature, workload, fan speed, and noise measurement method are sufficiently similar. A temperature or noise number without those conditions may not tell you how the cards compare in your system.
Rank #2
- Powered by the NVIDIA Blackwell architecture and DLSS 4. System Requirements: Minimum 850W PSU with 16-pin 12V-2x6 (12VHPWR) connector required. Verify before purchasing.
- Military-grade components deliver rock-solid power and longer lifespan for ultimate durability. Compatibility: 348mm (13.7") length, 3.6 slots, 4.3 lbs. Confirm case clearance and slot spacing. GPU bracket included.
- Protective PCB coating helps protect against short circuits caused by moisture, dust, or debris
- 3.6-slot design with massive fin array optimized for airflow from three Axial-tech fans
- Phase-change GPU thermal pad helps ensure optimal thermal performance and longevity, outlasting traditional thermal paste for graphics cards under heavy loads
Power requirements depend on the specific card and PC
NVIDIA specifies 450 W total graphics power and 850 W required system power for the Founders Edition/reference design. Its listed connection options are three PCIe 8-pin cables used with the included adapter, or a 450 W-or-greater PCIe Gen 5 cable. NVIDIA cautions that system configuration affects power needs and that add-in-card specifications vary. Check the exact card’s instructions and account for the rest of your components when choosing a power supply. NVIDIA’s specifications and power guidance cover the reference design.
For a model-specific example, MSI lists the SUPRIM 24G at 450 W in Silent mode and 480 W in Gaming mode in its datasheet. These are that model’s stated mode ratings, not universal RTX 4090 figures. MSI GeForce RTX 4090 SUPRIM 24G specifications.
What build-quality features can you actually compare?
Named construction details are useful, but they are not a standardized measure of durability or overall quality. MSI documents a vapor chamber, heat pipes, and a metal backplate with thermal pads for the SUPRIM 24G. Tom’s Hardware reported a support bracket with its Gigabyte Gaming OC sample. Those facts describe specific products and sources; they do not establish that one brand or design is better built overall. MSI’s product specifications; Tom’s Hardware’s Gigabyte Gaming OC review.
For a practical comparison, look at the exact card’s backplate and cooler construction, whether a support bracket is included, and its weight. Treat those as individual features. The cited sources do not provide standardized durability testing across the Founders Edition and partner cards.
Quick Recap
A checklist for choosing between FE and a partner card
- Check fit: Find the exact model’s dimensions and slot thickness, then compare them with case clearance and the room needed to route its power cable.
- Confirm power: Check the card’s stated power mode or limit, connector and cable requirements, and PSU guidance against your full system configuration.
- Compare cooling evidence carefully: Separate advertised design features from measured temperatures and noise. Prefer reviews with similar test conditions.
- Assess support and construction by feature: Check card weight, backplate details, and whether a bracket or stand is included; do not treat these as proof of overall durability.
