What to Do If an RTX 4090 Heatsink or Shroud Piece Comes Loose

Shut down the PC, switch off and unplug the power supply, and don’t keep using or manipulating the card until the loose piece is identified. Photograph the piece and the area it came from, then contact the card maker—or the computer maker if the GPU came installed in a system—before removing the cooler or attempting a repair.

First, make the card safe and document what happened

  1. Shut down and unplug the computer. Do not try to push the piece back into place while the card is installed or powered.
  2. Keep the loose part. Avoid bending, sanding, gluing, or otherwise altering it. Store it so it cannot be lost or damaged.
  3. Take clear photos. Photograph the piece from several angles, the spot where it appears to have come from, the full graphics card, and its model and serial-number labels. Include any visible damage.
  4. Find the exact card model. Check the card label, purchase record, or system specifications. Establish whether it is an NVIDIA GeForce RTX 4090 Founders Edition, a board-partner model such as ASUS, MSI, or GIGABYTE, or a card supplied inside a prebuilt computer.

Appearance alone may not establish whether a part is decorative or structurally important. The available official guidance does not provide a model-by-model identification guide for loose RTX 4090 pieces, so ask the manufacturer or a qualified repairer to identify it from your photos.

What might have come loose?

Shroud or trim

A plastic or metal cover may be part of the exterior shroud, but do not assume that a fragment is purely cosmetic. Its shape and location vary by model, and a loose piece may be a symptom of impact or other damage.

Heatsink or cooler assembly

A detached section of the heatsink or fin stack is different from a trim piece: it may affect the cooler’s construction or operation. Leave the cooler assembled and ask the manufacturer or a repairer to inspect it. NVIDIA Support warns that replacing a graphics-card fan and heatsink is not an easy task and says excessive force during heatsink removal can damage the GPU. Its guidance does not provide a method for reattaching a loose piece.

PCB-mounted part or visible board damage

If the piece appears to have come from the circuit board, or you can see a missing or detached component, stop and seek service rather than trying to identify or repair it yourself. ASUS lists component detachment or absence among examples of damage relevant to its graphics-card warranty assessment. That guidance does not determine how another manufacturer—or ASUS in a particular case—will decide a claim.

Contact the right support channel before taking the card apart

Warranty eligibility and service routes depend on the card maker, model, purchase history, region, and condition. Send support the photos, exact model and serial number, proof of purchase if available, and a short description of when and how the piece came loose. Ask whether to ship the card as-is and whether they want you to remove it from the PC. Do not remove the heatsink or cooler unless the responsible support channel or a qualified repairer directs you to do so.

NVIDIA GeForce RTX 4090 Founders Edition

NVIDIA’s warranty page includes the RTX 4090 Founders Edition and states that coverage for manufacturing defects or hardware component failures is three years from purchase, subject to the product-specific warranty. NVIDIA says it may repair or replace an eligible defective product and directs customers with a problem to its support team. The warranty excludes issues not specifically related to manufacturing defects or hardware failure, including misuse, negligence, and service by an unauthorized representative. Read the NVIDIA warranty terms and contact NVIDIA Support to confirm your eligibility and next steps.

ASUS, MSI, GIGABYTE, and other board-partner cards

Use the support route for the company that made the specific card, not NVIDIA’s Founders Edition warranty channel. ASUS’s graphics-card CID guidance, updated 2025-10-16, says authorized service centers may offer charged part replacement under its Customer Induced Damage process; it does not decide an individual warranty claim. MSI support provides warranty checks and online RMA or service routes. For U.S. owners, GIGABYTE’s repair support offers repair requests, tracking, warranty inquiries, and e-support. Confirm the applicable terms and service options for your country.

RTX 4090 supplied in a prebuilt computer

If the card came as part of a system, begin with the computer manufacturer. NVIDIA’s fan-replacement guidance says system-integrated products should be handled by the system manufacturer for warranty purposes. Follow the system maker’s instructions rather than opening or disassembling the graphics card.

Can you glue the shroud back on or keep using the GPU?

There is no universal answer based on the words “shroud piece” or “heatsink piece.” The available guidance does not establish whether a particular loose part can be safely reattached or whether a particular card is safe to operate. Keep the system off until support or a qualified repairer has identified the part and advised what to do.

Do not use household glue, tape, or thermal paste as an improvised attachment. These materials do not identify or correct the cause of the detachment, and an attempted repair could complicate inspection or service. NVIDIA’s guidance recommends manufacturer repair for a card still under warranty and cautions that heatsink work can damage the GPU; it does not authorize gluing a loose part.

If the card is out of warranty

Have a qualified GPU repairer inspect the card and determine whether the loose item is a replaceable exterior part, part of the cooler, or evidence of board damage. Ask for a repair plan before authorizing cooler removal or other work.

A complete third-party VGA cooler can be a possible replacement path if the original cooler needs replacement, but only after confirming compatibility with the exact card model. A generic RTX 4090 cooler should not be assumed to fit every board-partner card, and replacing a full cooler is not the same as replacing a small shroud piece. NVIDIA notes that compatible third-party coolers exist in general, but does not identify a specific RTX 4090-compatible cooler in its guidance.

What will not fix a detached piece

  • A graphics-card support bracket: ASUS describes holders as a way to support a heavy card against sagging or bending. That may address sag if it is present, but it does not reattach a loose shroud or heatsink piece. See ASUS’s graphics-card holder guidance.
  • Removing the cooler “to have a look”: Disassembly is not a safe substitute for diagnosis, and NVIDIA warns that excessive force when removing the heatsink can damage the GPU.
  • Buying a replacement cooler without checking fit: Compatibility depends on the exact card model, and a full cooler may not be the part that needs replacement.
