How to Choose an Energy-Efficient Refrigerator for Your Kitchen

Choose a refrigerator that fits your kitchen and household, then compare annual kWh among similar models and calculate costs using your local electricity rate.

Measure your kitchen opening and the route to it first, then choose a refrigerator that fits your household’s needs without excess capacity. Compare the yellow EnergyGuide label’s annual kilowatt-hours (kWh) among similarly sized, similarly configured models; check the exact model’s ENERGY STAR status; and estimate electricity cost using your local rate. These U.S. labels and programs help narrow the choices, but no single refrigerator is best for every kitchen or household.

1. Measure the space before comparing refrigerators

Start with the opening, not the product listing. Record its width, height, and depth, and check the manufacturer’s installation instructions for required ventilation clearance. Measure the full delivery path—including doorways, halls, and turns—and account for door swing so the refrigerator can be installed and opened without blocking cabinets or walkways.

Then choose only as much capacity as your household needs. ENERGY STAR advises that larger refrigerators generally use more energy and says its most energy-efficient models are typically 16–20 cubic feet. That range is a useful reference, not a capacity target for every household. See ENERGY STAR’s refrigerator guidance.

2. Compare annual energy use on the EnergyGuide label

In the United States, the yellow EnergyGuide label shows estimated annual energy consumption in kWh, estimated yearly operating cost, and a comparison range for similar models. The Federal Trade Commission explains how to read the label in its EnergyGuide shopping guide.

Use annual kWh as the clearest starting point for comparing electricity use. Compare compact models with compact models, and, where possible, keep capacity and configuration similar. A lower-kWh refrigerator is expected to use less electricity under the label’s typical-use estimate, but actual consumption varies with use and conditions.

To estimate annual electricity cost at home, multiply the listed kWh per year by your actual electricity price per kWh. The label’s dollar estimate uses typical use and a national-average electricity price, so it may not match your bill. For example, a refrigerator listed at 400 kWh/year would cost about $80 per year at a rate of $0.20 per kWh; substitute your own label figure and utility rate rather than treating this illustration as a product estimate.

3. Understand what ENERGY STAR certification does—and does not—tell you

ENERGY STAR says certified refrigerators are about 9% more energy efficient than models meeting the federal minimum standard. Its published criteria specify at least 10% less measured energy use than applicable federal standards for qualifying refrigerator categories; the criteria page dates that requirement to August 5, 2021. These figures describe comparisons with a baseline, not a promise that every certified refrigerator uses the same amount of electricity. Check the exact model number in the current ENERGY STAR criteria and product information.

Ordinary ENERGY STAR certification is also not the same as ENERGY STAR’s separate, year-specific “Most Efficient” recognition. Because the available criteria reference identifies 2025, verify the current year’s criteria and product listing before relying on a “Most Efficient” claim.

4. Choose a configuration that suits both your habits and energy goals

ENERGY STAR says top-freezer models tend to use the least energy compared with bottom-freezer and side-by-side designs, and that fewer doors reduce air leakage. Treat these as general tendencies, not guarantees: capacity, model design, and measured annual kWh still matter. Compare EnergyGuide figures for models with broadly similar size and layout before deciding whether a different configuration’s convenience is worth a possible energy trade-off.

5. Consider the refrigerant’s climate impact separately

Refrigerant is not a measure of electricity use. It matters for climate impact if gas escapes from the appliance. ENERGY STAR identifies R-600a and R-441A as lower-global-warming-potential refrigerants. If the manufacturer discloses the refrigerant, you can use that information as an additional environmental consideration; do not treat it as a substitute for comparing annual kWh. See ENERGY STAR’s refrigerator information.

6. Compare ownership cost and verify rebates

A low purchase price does not by itself show which refrigerator will cost less to own. Consider the purchase price, estimated electricity cost over the period you expect to keep the appliance, and any rebate for which you actually qualify. ENERGY STAR provides a zip-code-based rebate finder; confirm a program’s current availability, eligibility rules, and terms before counting a rebate in your budget.

ENERGY STAR estimates that properly recycling an old refrigerator and replacing it with a new ENERGY STAR certified model can save about $150 over the new refrigerator’s 12-year lifetime. This is an agency estimate for that specific replacement-and-recycling scenario, not a guaranteed saving for an individual household.

The ENERGY STAR Flip Your Fridge calculator asks for electricity rate, refrigerator type, approximate model year, and capacity. Its savings estimates vary with use and upkeep, so treat its result as an estimate rather than a bill forecast.

7. Use this checklist when comparing exact models

  • Confirm exterior dimensions, door swing, delivery-path fit, and required installation clearances.
  • Choose a capacity that meets your needs; larger units generally consume more energy.
  • Compare EnergyGuide annual kWh among models of similar capacity and configuration, then calculate a local cost using your electricity rate.
  • Verify the exact model number’s ENERGY STAR status; check separately for any current-year “Most Efficient” recognition.
  • Weigh freezer layout and door count against your household’s preferences, treating configuration-based energy differences as tendencies.
  • If refrigerant is disclosed, note whether the model uses lower-GWP R-600a or R-441A.
  • Check current local rebate terms and whether the seller or local program will recycle the old appliance responsibly.

8. Reduce energy use after installation

Buying an efficient model is only part of the result. ENERGY STAR recommends setting the refrigerator to 35–38°F, placing it away from heat sources, and leaving a few inches behind it for air circulation. Keep door seals airtight, limit how long the door stays open, and recycle the old refrigerator rather than leaving it in service or disposing of it improperly. More guidance is available from ENERGY STAR.
