Then test another network, check the VPN profile and credentials, and review device settings. Save Windows network reset for last: it removes network adapters and settings and may require VPN software to be reinstalled or configured again.
1. Check whether your internet connection works without the VPN
Temporarily disconnect the VPN and try opening a website or using another internet-connected service. If that also fails, troubleshoot the Wi-Fi or internet connection first: reconnect to Wi-Fi, restart the device, and, if needed, restart the modem or router. Apple recommends trying a different network to see whether the problem is specific to one connection (Apple Support).

If ordinary internet works but the VPN does not, continue with the VPN checks below. This simple comparison helps separate a general connection problem from one that appears only when the VPN is active.

2. Find out whether the issue affects the whole VPN or just one app
If only one app, website, or call fails while other internet access works, the VPN may not be the cause. Check whether the service itself is working and whether firewall or security software could be blocking it. Microsoft’s Skype guidance suggests checking the connection and security software and testing a call without the VPN; Google Meet likewise recommends disconnecting from a VPN or proxy temporarily to test a direct connection (Microsoft Support; Google Meet Help).

These are diagnostic tests, not proof that the VPN is defective. If the app works only when the VPN is off, share that result with your VPN provider or network administrator rather than assuming the cause.
3. Test another network and check Wi-Fi stability
Connect to another available Wi-Fi network, or compare Wi-Fi with wired Ethernet if your device and setup support it. If the VPN works on the alternate connection, the original network may be unstable or configured in a way that interferes with the VPN. Apple recommends trying another network when investigating connectivity issues (Apple Support).

Microsoft documented a problem on Windows 8 and Windows 8.1 in which fluctuating wireless signal notifications could prevent a third-party VPN connection from being established (Microsoft Support). That report is limited to those older Windows versions; it supports checking for an unstable Wi-Fi connection, not treating weak Wi-Fi as the explanation for every modern VPN drop.

On Windows, confirm that you selected the intended VPN profile and check whether Windows reports it as connected after you try to connect. If the profile is missing or its details may be wrong, get the correct setup information from your VPN provider. For a work VPN, ask your organization’s administrator to check the profile, authentication, and access requirements instead of guessing at settings (Microsoft Support).

5. Review Android VPN settings and always-on VPN
On Android, open Settings > Network and Internet > VPN. Menu names can vary by device, so you can also search Settings for “VPN.” Select the VPN connection to review or edit its settings. Google documents that you can turn on or off always-on VPN in these settings; when an always-on VPN stops working, Android shows a persistent notification until it reconnects. Turning off always-on VPN clears that notification (Google Android Help).
6. Check device maintenance and security software
Check that your device’s date, time, and time zone are correct, install available software updates, and restart the device. Apple also advises considering whether VPN or other third-party security software is involved in a connectivity problem (Apple Support).

Security tools that monitor network traffic can interfere with connections. Apple explains that “Third-party security software that monitors or interacts with network connections can potentially block some connections, such as those required to access the internet or communicate with other devices on your network.” If you test with such software temporarily disabled, do so only long enough to check the connection, then restore protection. Avoid changing settings you don’t understand, particularly on a work-managed device.
7. Use Windows network reset only after other steps fail
Microsoft recommends network reset only as a last step. It removes installed network adapters and resets network settings to their defaults. Afterward, you may need to reinstall or set up VPN client software and other network tools again (Microsoft Support).

Because this can affect more than the VPN, try the lower-impact checks first: confirm ordinary internet access, test another network, and verify the profile and credentials. If you do reset the network, make sure you can obtain any required VPN setup details before proceeding.
8. Contact the VPN provider or work administrator
If the VPN still fails, ask the provider or your organization’s administrator to review the service and configuration. Include details that help them narrow down the cause:
- Your device’s operating system and version
- The VPN app or profile you use
- Whether ordinary internet works with the VPN disconnected
- Whether the VPN behaves differently on another network
- When disconnections occur and how often
- The exact error message, if one appears
A provider or administrator can check service-specific profiles, authentication, and managed access policies. Don’t assume there is an outage unless the provider confirms it.
