RTMP is commonly used to send a live feed into a streaming service; HLS is designed to deliver live or on-demand video to viewers over HTTP, often through web servers and CDNs. Choose an ingest protocol based on your destination’s requirements, and a playback format based on your audience, player, delivery infrastructure, and latency needs.
RTMP vs. HLS at a glance
| Decision | RTMP | HLS |
|---|---|---|
| Typical role | Contribution or ingest: sending a feed to a streaming service. AWS Elemental MediaLive, for example, documents RTMP push and pull inputs. | Viewer delivery: HTTP-based live or on-demand playback through web servers and CDNs. AWS MediaLive also documents HLS pull input. |
| Delivery model | Depends on the destination service and its supported ingest options. | Uses HTTP delivery; Apple describes HLS as working with ordinary web servers and CDNs and adapting playback to available network speed. |
| Latency | No universal RTMP delay figure is established by the cited documentation. | Standard HLS and Low-Latency HLS are different implementations. LL-HLS adds mechanisms to reduce delay, but does not promise a fixed end-to-end latency. |
| Compatibility | Check the streaming service’s current ingest support and security requirements. | Check the platform, player, and target device set. Apple documents HLS support for Apple platforms, but that does not establish a complete compatibility matrix for every browser, TV, or service. |
These labels describe protocol roles, not a universal head-to-head performance result. One workflow can ingest with one protocol, package or transcode the feed, then deliver it using another. AWS describes this kind of upstream-to-channel-to-downstream workflow in its MediaLive input protocol documentation.
When to use RTMP
Sending a contribution feed to a platform
If you are configuring an encoder or streaming application to send video to a service, start with that service’s current ingest instructions. RTMP is a common ingest option, and AWS MediaLive provides a concrete example by listing RTMP push and pull inputs. This is an example of one service’s support, not a guarantee that every platform accepts RTMP or uses the same connection and security settings.
Check transport and authentication details
Use the endpoint, stream key, transport security, and any other connection details supplied by the destination. AWS’s MediaLive documentation notes service-specific limitations for secure RTMP transport; do not assume those limitations apply to a different provider. If a feed will not connect, confirm the exact protocol and security mode the destination expects rather than changing settings based on the protocol name alone.

Support for VISCA over IP encoder workflows enables flexible PTZ control, while the dashboard provides video preview and system status.
When to use HLS
Delivering playback to viewers
HLS is designed for live and on-demand audio or video delivery over HTTP. Apple describes it as a way to serve media using ordinary web servers and CDNs. It can offer alternate streams at different bit rates and switch playback as network conditions change, which can help viewers on varying connections. For broad delivery, HLS is a strong fit when the service’s packaging, CDN, and player support the workflow.
Media format and packaging
HLS media can use fragmented MPEG-4 or MPEG-2 transport streams. Apple’s current basic deployment guidance recommends fragmented MPEG-4 for the setup it describes; treat that as Apple’s recommendation for that deployment context, not a rule for every HLS service or workflow. See Apple’s HLS overview and deployment documentation for the applicable details.

How to choose based on latency
Do not infer delay from the protocol name
The reviewed official documentation does not establish a universal number for RTMP latency versus HLS latency. Actual end-to-end delay depends on the full implementation, including encoding, segment or part duration, packaging, CDN and cache behavior, player buffering, and network conditions. Compare measured delay across the specific service and player setup you intend to use.
What Low-Latency HLS changes
Apple’s Low-Latency HLS (LL-HLS) adds partial media segments, playlist delta updates, blocking playlist reload, preload hints, and rendition reports. These mechanisms require compatible production, delivery, cache, and player behavior; enabling one component alone does not make a workflow low-latency. Apple’s authoring specification recommends a one-second part target, with the target constrained by expected client round-trip time: it should be at least the expected P95 client RTT, and Apple recommends at least three times that RTT. That is server configuration guidance, not a promise of one-second viewer latency. Consult the LL-HLS documentation and HLS authoring specification.

Check compatibility before choosing
- For ingest: verify that the destination accepts the protocol and transport mode your encoder will use.
- For playback: verify the platform and player support the HLS packaging and features you plan to deliver, including LL-HLS if low delay is a requirement.
- For devices: check the actual browsers, televisions, apps, and operating systems your viewers use. Apple’s documentation establishes HLS support in Apple’s ecosystem, but it is not a complete current matrix for every device or platform.
Use different protocols at different stages
In a typical managed workflow, an encoder sends a contribution feed to an ingest service; the service may then transcode or package it for delivery through an origin, packager, or CDN to viewer players. The ingest and playback protocols do not have to match. AWS MediaLive’s input and channel model is one documented example of separating upstream inputs from downstream delivery systems. Choose each stage according to the systems that connect to it rather than forcing a single protocol across the entire chain.
