The server URL tells the encoder where to send the feed; the stream key identifies or authorizes the broadcast. Use the exact URL and key supplied by the platform you’re streaming to—formats are not interchangeable. For YouTube, RTMPS is the encrypted version of RTMP.
What RTMP does in a live stream
RTMP means Real-Time Messaging Protocol. In a typical live setup, a camera, screen capture, or other source is encoded into audio and video, then sent over the internet to the platform that will process and deliver it to viewers. Twitch describes the encoder’s signal as traveling over the open internet to Twitch using RTMP (Twitch Developers: Video Broadcast).
The basic path is:
Camera, screen, or audio source → encoder → RTMP or RTMPS connection → platform ingest server → platform processing → viewers
The ingest server is the receiving endpoint for the broadcaster’s upload. It is not the same thing as a viewer-facing playback page. Twitch describes its ingest subsystem as the first stop for incoming streams, where they are received, authorized, registered, and prepared for viewers.

What are an RTMP URL and a stream key?
They work together, but they are different values. The server URL points the encoder to an ingest endpoint. The stream key is a platform-provided identifier or credential associated with the broadcast. Treat the key as sensitive: someone who obtains it may be able to broadcast to the associated channel.
How the fields fit together
Some services and encoders ask for the URL and key in separate fields. Others require one combined address. YouTube’s API documentation notes that an encoder may take an ingestion URL and stream name separately or require them combined as STREAM_URL/STREAM_NAME (YouTube Live Streaming API: liveStreams).

Why examples are not interchangeable
Each platform supplies its own endpoint and key. For Twitch, the documented format is rtmp://<ingest-server>/app/<stream-key>[?bandwidthtest=true]; the server receives the feed and the key identifies the stream. That is a Twitch-specific pattern, not a universal address to paste into another service. YouTube likewise provides ingestion details for its own live streams, including primary and backup addresses in its API. Always copy the current values from the destination platform rather than borrowing a URL or key example.
RTMP vs. RTMPS: when is the secure version useful?
RTMPS is RTMP carried over a TLS/SSL connection, which encrypts the data in transit. YouTube Help describes it as “RTMP over a Transport Layer Security (TLS/SSL) connection” that “provides encryption” (YouTube Help: Encrypt your stream using RTMPS).

YouTube may show an ordinary RTMP URL by default. To use RTMPS, obtain the RTMPS URL from Live Control Room and confirm that the encoder supports the protocol. If YouTube reports an SSL error despite a correct-looking address, its help guidance says to check that the URL uses rtmps and suggests port 443.

| Protocol | Encryption | Codecs and use noted by YouTube | Latency consideration |
|---|---|---|---|
| RTMP | Not encrypted | H.264; suited to normal, low, or ultra-low latency | Can serve low-latency workflows |
| RTMPS | Encrypted | H.264; suited to normal, low, or ultra-low latency | Can serve low-latency workflows |
| HLS | Encrypted | H.264 and H.265/HEVC, including HDR | Segment-based; typically more latency than RTMP and not suitable for ultra-low latency |
| DASH | Encrypted | H.264 and VP9 | Segment-based; typically more latency than RTMP and not suitable for ultra-low latency |
Choose based on the platform’s supported codecs, encryption needs, latency target, resolution or HDR requirements, and the protocols your encoder actually supports. HLS or DASH may better suit some high-resolution requirements, but their additional codec options do not make them a universal replacement for RTMP/RTMPS.
Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone. How to set the server URL and stream key
- Open the destination platform’s live setup. Create or select the broadcast, then retrieve its current ingest URL and stream key or stream name. Twitch says keys can be retrieved from the broadcaster dashboard or API; YouTube’s workflow uses Live Control Room, and its API exposes ingestion information.
- Open the encoder’s streaming settings. Choose a destination-platform preset if one is available. Otherwise, enter the exact server URL in the server or ingest field and the key/name in the stream-key field.
- Check whether the encoder expects separate or combined values. Follow the encoder’s field labels and the platform’s instructions. If it requires a combined address, use the platform-provided URL and name in the format it specifies; do not append a key to an example from another service.
- Select RTMPS when you intend to use the encrypted connection. Paste the RTMPS URL—not the ordinary RTMP one—and confirm encoder support. For a YouTube SSL error, check the
rtmpsprefix and, if needed, try the port 443 guidance from YouTube Help. - Start the encoder and check the platform’s live status. Confirm that the platform is receiving data, then review its health or error indicators. YouTube’s API includes active, inactive, and error stream states as well as health information and configuration issues.
Twitch bandwidth testing
Twitch’s documented URL format optionally includes ?bandwidthtest=true to disable live viewing while checking bandwidth health in Twitch Inspector. This parameter is for Twitch’s workflow; do not add it to YouTube or assume it has a general RTMP meaning.

More convenient for live broadcasting.
- 【Powerful OSD Setting】- OSD setting function of the live broadcasting encoder makes it easy for you to add any self-defined text, time and image overlay on your video when output displayed. You may add any text/logo at any position to announce your copyrights with this hevc video encoder.
Protect the stream key
Handle a stream key like a password that can authorize broadcasting to your channel. Twitch explicitly warns broadcasters not to share it because exposure could compromise the channel (Twitch Help: Stream Key FAQ).
- Do not show a real key in screenshots, recordings, or public support posts.
- Use a placeholder such as
YOUR_STREAM_KEYin examples or documentation. - Retrieve or refresh the key through the platform’s official controls, not from an untrusted message or third-party page.
- If you believe the key was exposed, use the platform’s official key-management controls to replace or reset it, then update the encoder.
Troubleshooting connection and ingest problems
| Symptom | What to check | Practical fix |
|---|---|---|
| The platform never receives the feed | Destination, server URL, key, and whether the encoder expects separate or combined fields | Copy the current URL and key/name again from the correct platform’s live setup, then enter them in the fields the encoder expects. |
| Authentication or stream registration fails | Whether the key belongs to the selected channel and broadcast | Retrieve the key from the destination platform’s official controls and replace any stale or mistyped value. |
| An SSL error appears with YouTube RTMPS | Whether the URL is the platform’s RTMPS address and the encoder supports RTMPS | Use the supplied rtmps URL; YouTube suggests port 443 for certain SSL errors. |
| The stream sends data but the platform reports a health or configuration issue | Platform status and health/error details | Use the platform’s reported issue to check the encoder and stream configuration; YouTube exposes stream state and health information through its API. |
| A Twitch bandwidth test goes live to viewers | Whether the Twitch URL includes its testing parameter | For Twitch Inspector testing, use Twitch’s documented bandwidthtest=true option. It is not a general-purpose parameter for other platforms. |
Exact ports, URL layouts, key formats, and recovery controls vary by service. The Twitch examples above describe Twitch, and the protocol and troubleshooting details attributed to YouTube apply to YouTube Live.
