Track viewers and stream health while you are live
Open the stream in YouTube Studio’s Live Control Room. Read delivery status separately from audience activity: stream health reports status and any errors, while analytics cards describe viewing and interaction. YouTube notes that the real-time metrics shown can vary depending on whether you stream from a phone or an encoder, so not every interface will show every card.

- Concurrent viewers: how many people are watching at the same time. Peak concurrent viewers is the highest simultaneous audience reached; average concurrent viewers summarizes the simultaneous audience over the broadcast.
- Views: times the live stream was viewed while live. Views are not the same as concurrent viewers or watch time.
- Average view duration: estimated average minutes watched per view.
- Duration: how long the stream has been running.
- Likes: likes during the stream; YouTube says they transfer to the video-on-demand archive.
- Chat rate: messages sent in live chat per minute. It measures message activity, not how many distinct viewers are chatting.

Find the post-stream engagement report
- In YouTube Studio, select Content > Live.
- Select the ended stream you want to inspect.
- Open Analytics, then Engagement.
- Review the concurrent-viewers report and chat-message count, along with the other available video-level metrics.
YouTube says the concurrent-viewers report and chat-message metric are available within minutes after the stream ends. The post-stream snapshot may also include views, subscribers gained, total watch time, peak concurrent viewers, duration, average view duration, and reactions. Video-level reports can include average and peak concurrent viewers and audience-retention key moments. See YouTube’s instructions for viewing live-stream data.

Use broader analytics to understand what happened
A stream’s engagement numbers need context. In YouTube Analytics, filter content by Live, On demand, or Live & on demand, depending on the report and question. Available watch-time reporting covers watch time, audience retention, demographics, playback locations, traffic sources, and devices. At channel level, the Live report can show how viewers found streams, including Browse features, YouTube Search, suggested videos, direct or unknown sources, and channel pages.
- Audience retention, watch time, and average view duration help describe how long people stayed and where attention changed.
- Traffic sources and impressions/click-through data, where available, help put discovery and viewing in context.
- Audience reports can help with planning, including when viewers are on YouTube and which devices they use. Some audience data, such as geography, traffic sources, or gender, may be limited; a missing segment does not mean the audience was zero.
- Advanced Mode offers expanded reports, comparisons, and exports.
Menu presentation may vary: YouTube says an updated Studio analytics experience began rolling out gradually in July 2026. Its content-performance documentation also says that, beginning August 24, 2026, views are counted when a video starts to play across formats, including live streams. YouTube states that this view-count change does not affect Partner Program earnings or eligibility, which continue to use other qualified or engaged measures. Compare streams fairly
There is no universal “good” concurrent-viewer count or chat rate established by YouTube’s public help documentation. Use your own channel history rather than treating one peak as a score. A practical comparison combines related measures:

This is a comparison framework, not an official YouTube formula or benchmark. Compare similar broadcasts and note whether topic, duration, schedule, promotion, or horizontal, vertical, or dual-stream format changed. A metric moving alongside one of those changes does not by itself prove that the change caused it.

Understand reporting differences and special cases
Live Control Room and Analytics do not have to match
YouTube Analytics data is tied to the video ID and is processed and despammed. YouTube says Analytics measures different information from Live Control Room, so a difference between a real-time reading and a later report does not by itself mean either is broken. YouTube says live peak-concurrent and chat-message reporting can be downloaded as CSV from the relevant reports. Details are in YouTube’s live metrics documentation.
Get vertical-only metrics from a dual stream
For a horizontal and vertical dual stream, Live Control Room combines metrics. YouTube documents a separate workflow for vertical-only analytics after at least 24 hours:

- In YouTube Studio, go to Content > Live and select the ended dual stream.
- Open Analytics > Advanced Mode.
- Choose Playback location as the breakdown.
- Set a date range extending beyond the first 24 hours after the stream.
- Select Vertical live feed to view the vertical-only figures.
Follow the official metrics instructions if labels differ in your Studio interface.
When a Live-only filter hides a report
YouTube notes that interaction and revenue reports are not available with the Live-only filter in some Analytics reports. Try Live & on demand or use a different report where the metric is available; do not infer that the interaction or revenue was zero.

Common tracking problems and what to do
- You cannot find a metric during the broadcast: the real-time cards vary by streaming method. Check stream health for errors, and review the ended stream’s Analytics afterward for the available report.
- Post-stream figures differ from what you saw live: Live Control Room and processed, despammed Analytics data are not identical measures. Use the post-stream report for its documented metric and compare like with like.
- A geography or audience segment is missing: some audience data can be limited. Treat it as unavailable, not as a zero-value audience.
- A report disappears under Live filtering: certain interaction and revenue reports are unavailable in Live-only views. Switch to Live & on demand or a suitable different report.
- You need the vertical portion of a dual broadcast: wait at least 24 hours, then use Advanced Mode and the Playback location breakdown to select Vertical live feed.
- You are unsure whether performance is good: compare against similar streams on your own channel, using a mix of audience scale, viewing depth, participation, and discovery rather than peak concurrent viewers alone.
Keep a simple stream-to-stream record
For useful comparisons, record the stream’s video ID or title, date, format, duration, topic, and major promotion changes alongside the metrics you care about. Use the same post-stream reporting window and comparable definitions when reviewing multiple broadcasts.
