A router restart briefly interrupts your connection but normally keeps saved settings. A factory reset is different: it can erase your Wi-Fi name and password, administrator credentials, internet configuration, and other custom settings. You may need to set up the router again and reconnect your devices. The exact results depend on the router model and, for ISP-managed equipment, your provider.
Restart or factory reset: which one do you mean?
“Reset” can refer to two different actions. A restart (also called a reboot) turns the router off and back on. It interrupts internet access while the router starts again, but normally leaves its saved configuration intact. NETGEAR and Cisco describe restart as distinct from restoring factory defaults: a restart does not delete saved settings (NETGEAR; Cisco).

A factory reset returns the router to its default settings and can wipe the configuration you customized. It is a more disruptive step, and may mean setting up the router again. If you are troubleshooting an unresponsive router, try a normal restart first unless the manufacturer’s instructions specifically call for a factory reset.

What a factory reset can erase
Wi-Fi name and password
Your custom Wi-Fi network name (SSID) and password may be deleted. The router may instead use default network details, depending on the model. Devices that remembered the old network may need to be reconnected using the credentials configured after the reset. NETGEAR and Verizon describe these effects for the equipment covered by their instructions (NETGEAR; Verizon).

Administrator login
A custom administrator password may be erased or the router may return to its default setup state. Do not assume that default credentials are the same across brands or models. Check the device label and its official setup instructions rather than trying credentials from another router.
Internet connection settings
A factory reset can erase internet settings. TP-Link lists internet configuration among the settings removed by a reset, and Huawei says reconfiguration may be needed before devices can access the internet (TP-Link; Huawei). Whether your connection restores automatically depends on the router and provider; if you do not have the required setup details, contact your ISP before resetting.

Settings such as port forwarding and parental controls may also be lost. The exact list varies by router, so consult the model-specific factory-reset instructions before proceeding.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errors2Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minute3Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problemsFirmware
A settings reset does not necessarily roll firmware back to an earlier version. D-Link says its cited factory-reset procedure restores settings without reverting firmware, but that guidance is specific to the DIR-860L. Check the support information for your exact model before assuming what a reset will do to its firmware (D-Link).

Will a factory reset disconnect your devices?
During the reset and router restart, devices lose their connection. Afterward, they may not reconnect automatically if the Wi-Fi name or password has changed. Connect them to the network using the credentials you set during setup. Verizon notes that devices on its covered router family must use the reconfigured matching network settings after a factory reset (Verizon).
Before you press the reset button
- Confirm the action. Make sure you intend to restore factory defaults, not simply restart the router.
- Find the exact instructions. Look up the router model and hardware revision in its official manual or support page. Button location, press duration, and setup steps vary.
- Check your recovery information. If you may need ISP credentials or custom network configuration to restore service, make sure you can retrieve them or know how to contact your provider.
- Identify the correct control. A recessed reset button is not necessarily a restart control. Follow the model’s instructions; use a thin tool only if the manufacturer calls for one.
Set up the router after a factory reset
- Use the router’s official setup instructions. Follow the steps for your exact model and hardware revision; do not rely on another model’s button timing or setup path.
- Restore internet access. Enter any required provider or connection details. If you do not have them or service does not return, contact your ISP.
- Set administrator access and Wi-Fi details. Create administrator credentials and choose the network name and password you want to use.
- Reconnect your devices. Join each device to the configured Wi-Fi network, then restore any custom features you need, such as parental controls or port forwarding.
- Check for available firmware. NETGEAR recommends checking for the latest firmware available for the router model after setup (NETGEAR).
Why model-specific guidance matters
There is no single reset procedure or button-hold time that applies to every router. TP-Link’s support article, last updated April 17, 2026, gives an approximately 10-second hold for the instructions it covers and advises checking the product and hardware version. D-Link’s cited instructions apply to the DIR-860L and call for holding its recessed button for more than ten seconds (TP-Link; D-Link).

- READY FOR THE DEVICES YOU ALREADY OWN: Your phones, laptops, and TVs work right out of the box. WiFi 6 delivers speeds up to 1.8 Gbps across 2.4 GHz and 5 GHz bands. Backward compatible with WiFi 5 and earlier.
- COVERAGE IN EVERY ROOM: Covers up to 1,500 sq. ft. for up to 20 connected devices. Walls, floors, and interference can reduce range. Larger or multi-story homes may benefit from a NETGEAR Orbi mesh WiFi system.
Some instructions are even narrower: Cisco’s article covers the RV016, RV042, RV042G, and RV082 VPN routers, while Verizon’s guidance applies to its router family. Huawei also notes that its described methods do not apply to every router. If the router came from your ISP or is managed by it, use the provider’s instructions. A reset procedure documented for one model is not a safe substitute for the instructions for another.
