Video games reflect environmental concerns in more than one way: some make climate change or migration part of the plot, some build ecological relationships into their worlds and mechanics, and others let players explore restoration or real climate data. The difference matters: an environmental setting is not automatically a climate argument, and participation in a game is not proof of lasting real-world change.
How games represent environmental concerns
Environmental themes in games predate today’s climate conversation. Their framing has shifted alongside environmental science and public awareness, while educational qualities have increasingly appeared in gameplay. A 2022 academic overview also describes a movement from large developers toward independent developers in the exploration of environmental themes.

There is no single environmental-game genre. A story may name a cause directly, while another game invites players to notice human relationships with nature without making an explicit climate claim. A useful way to read these works is to ask what issue appears, where it appears, and what kind of agency the player receives. These are ways to compare examples, not a universal classification.
- Issue: climate change, biodiversity, pollution, migration, food access or ecosystem restoration.
- Form: plot, world design, gameplay mechanics, cooperative play or an activation within a larger game.
- Player role: individual survivor, collective decision-maker, restorer of an ecosystem or explorer of information.
Games that make environmental issues part of play
Restoration and ocean ecosystems
Terra Nil, by Free Lives, makes ecosystem restoration the central activity rather than a backdrop. The Climate Resilience Center describes it as introducing players to ecosystem restoration. Koral, by Carlos Coronado, draws attention to corals and ocean life to reveal the state of ocean ecosystems and less visible aspects of climate change. The Climate Resilience Center’s guide to games for the environment discusses both titles.

Migration, food access and collective response
Usoni, from Jiwe Studios, critically reclaims and reframes climate-migration narratives. Out and About, by Yaldi Games, connects digital and local communities with sustainable food access amid rising food prices and soil erosion. Daybreak, by CMYK, makes climate response cooperative: players confront the problem together, with a better future presented as difficult but possible. These examples show how environmental play can involve social systems and collective choices, not only landscapes or wildlife. The Climate Resilience Center’s overview describes these approaches.
Survival in a changing landscape
In Away: The Survival Series, players control a sugar glider trying to survive in a landscape affected by the climate crisis. The United Nations Environment Programme (UNEP) described the game in a 2022 account of games addressing environmental themes. The setting and survival challenge place the player within environmental change, though that is distinct from a game whose central activity is restoring an ecosystem or managing climate policy.

Environmental themes in a long-running series
A 2025 peer-reviewed article argues that main-series Pokémon narratives increasingly acknowledge climate change and human environmental impacts over time, while offering a hopeful vision of adaptation. That is the article’s interpretation, not a settled consensus about the series. It is an example of environmental meaning developing across stories, rather than a single game necessarily functioning as a direct climate lesson.
When environmental play appears inside mainstream games
Environmental engagement can also take the form of a limited activation within a game whose main purpose is not environmental storytelling. UNEP’s 2022 account cited a tree-focused activation in Monument Valley 2, Earth Day clothing in Pokémon GO, a Pac-Man reforestation theme and tree-decoration purchases in June’s Journey tied to a developer planting trees.

These are historical examples reported in 2022. They should not be read as evidence that the events, items or commitments remain available today. An activation can attract attention or connect play to an environmental activity, but its reach, any funds raised or trees planted, and any lasting change in players’ behavior are separate outcomes.
Climate Station turns data into an interactive experience
Climate Station is an adjacent form of environmental engagement: a free PlayStation 5 and PlayStation VR2 application described by Sony Interactive Entertainment (SIE), rather than a conventional fictional game. SIE Vice President of Environment, Social, and Governance Kieren Mayers says it uses climate models from the Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change (IPCC), records from the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration (NOAA) and imagery from NASA.

In Sony’s description, the approximately 30-minute, three-act experience moves from a visualization of global weather to 120 years of temperature observations mapped across 20,000 points, then to five possible IPCC futures based on emissions pathways. Those details are Sony’s account of the application and its content. Mayers described the design aim this way: “Climate change should not feel like a lecture: learning through play.” Sony’s Climate Station announcement explains the experience.

What the audience and impact figures do—and do not—show
Surveys and reach figures can indicate that games offer a large channel for environmental engagement, but they do not establish lasting behavior change. The populations, methods and measured outcomes need to stay attached to the numbers.

- US survey: Yale Program on Climate Change Communication and Unity interviewed 2,034 US adults aged 18 or older who play video games from May 30 to June 7, 2022. This sample is not all gamers, nor a measure of global opinion. The Yale/Unity report describes its findings and methodology.
- Alliance reach: UNEP reported in 2023 that Playing for the Planet Alliance members had reached 636 million players. Reach is not a count of unique people demonstrated to have changed their behavior. In a separate survey, the alliance reported surveying 380,000 gamers and a 10 per cent uptick in knowledge around environmental themes through games. That reported knowledge result is not a causal estimate of durable learning or action.
- Global estimate: In the same 2023 UNEP interview, Sam Barratt, Chief of Youth, Education and Advocacy, cited an estimate of 3.1 billion people who play games. That is a global reach estimate, not the result of the Yale/Unity survey.
Barratt described games as a medium with “incredible reach and agency,” but also cautioned that it was “still too early to be equivocal” about effects on attitudes and action. The distinction is important: audience reach, in-game participation, reported knowledge, fundraising or planting outcomes, and independently measured long-term behavior are different kinds of evidence. UNEP’s 2023 interview discusses both the reported figures and the limits of what they show.
How to judge an environmental game
When deciding what a game is saying about the environment, look beyond scenery or promotional language. Consider whether the work identifies a cause, builds the issue into play, and gives players meaningful choices related to the problem. Then separate what happens in the game from any real-world outcome attached to it.
Quick Recap
- Is the environmental issue explicit? A named climate cause differs from a setting that simply contains forests, oceans or extreme weather.
- Where does the theme operate? A plot, a recurring mechanic, a restoration loop, a data visualization and a time-limited event make different kinds of claims.
- What can the player do? Surviving environmental change, rebuilding an ecosystem and coordinating a collective response offer distinct forms of agency.
- What evidence supports an impact claim? Keep engagement, knowledge, donations or planting separate from proof of lasting changes in attitude or behavior.
