If GitHub Copilot in a JetBrains IDE says it “Could not reach GitHub to verify the selected account,” the message does not prove that your internet connection is down. One documented incident tied this error to damaged local Copilot authentication data. Update the plugin first; if the error persists and your symptoms match that incident, back up the Copilot authentication database files and sign in again.
What this error does—and does not—tell you
The message has appeared during GitHub Copilot sign-in in JetBrains IDEs. A June 2026 issue documented it alongside OAuth code-flow and device-flow errors, error code -32603, and Copilot remaining at “Initializing Copilot…” (Microsoft’s JetBrains feedback issue).

In that incident, the issue report attributed the problem to a corrupted local Copilot configuration file. But the message is not a diagnosis: a separate Rider report described the same error even though the reporter could reach the GitHub API and Copilot worked in VS Code on the same machine and network. That report did not establish a cause or resolution (Rider sign-in report).

1. Update the Copilot plugin
Install the latest stable GitHub Copilot plugin available for your IDE, then restart the IDE. The June issue mentioned stable version 1.11.2-251 in connection with a hotfix deployed on June 19, 2026. That is historical information, not a recommendation to install that older version now; use the current stable release offered for your IDE.

Reinstalling the plugin alone did not resolve the documented authentication-database case, so do not treat reinstalling as a substitute for the targeted database reset below.
2. Close every Copilot-enabled editor
If the sign-in error remains and your case resembles the reported local database issue, close all IDEs and editors that use Copilot before moving any files. An open editor can lock the database files.

3. Back up the Copilot authentication database
In the Copilot configuration directory for your operating system, move these files, if present, to a separate backup folder:
auth.dbauth.db-walauth.db-shm
The reported locations are %LOCALAPPDATA%github-copilot on Windows and ~/.config/github-copilot on macOS and Linux. If you use the XDG_CONFIG_HOME environment variable, check $XDG_CONFIG_HOME/github-copilot instead.

This is a targeted, reversible workaround for the documented authentication-database pattern, not a universal fix for every sign-in failure. Move only the listed Copilot files; the cited issue does not support deleting unrelated IDE caches or credentials.
4. Restart and sign in again
Reopen the IDE and try signing into GitHub Copilot. To undo the change, close the IDE and move the backed-up files back to their original directory.

Use the symptoms to decide what to try
- Several matching error markers appear: The June 2026 issue also listed
OAuth code flow error,signInWithCodeFlow,signInWithDeviceFlow,EditorFetcherJSON-RPC errors, andTypeError [ERR_INVALID_CHAR]: Invalid character in header content ["Authorization"]inidea.log. These were markers in that incident, not requirements for the database workaround or signs that every case has the same cause. - The GitHub API works or Copilot signs in elsewhere: This makes an IDE- or plugin-specific problem plausible, but it does not identify the cause. The August 2026 Rider report recorded successful API and VS Code checks alongside the error, without confirming a fix.
- Your symptoms do not match the database report, or the reset does not help: The available reports do not establish a general next fix. Avoid broader cleanup based on guesswork. When reporting the issue, include the IDE and operating system, Copilot plugin version, exact error, relevant IDE logs, and whether GitHub API access or another editor works.
What to include in a support report
A clear report helps distinguish an IDE-specific sign-in problem from a wider connectivity issue. Include the exact error text and the checks you actually performed; a successful API request or another working editor is useful context, not proof of the cause. The August 2026 GitHub Community discussion repeats the same error for an IntelliJ Copilot login but provides no technical answer (GitHub Community discussion).
