Neither is automatically the better buy: a rotisserie chicken is priced per bird, while prepared wings are often priced per pound or per piece. To find which gives you more for your money, compare the local price with the amount of edible food your household expects to eat—not just the package price.
What current advertised prices show
The USDA Agricultural Marketing Service’s October 2, 2026 national weekly report lists a weighted average advertised price of $7.86 per conventional rotisserie chicken under two pounds, and $9.53 per conventional rotisserie chicken in the 2.1–3.0-pound class, where reported. It lists conventional prepared fried or baked bone-in wings at $6.92 per pound, and conventional prepared bone-in wings sold in bulk by the piece at $0.81 per piece. These are different price units, not a direct like-for-like comparison. USDA AMS, Weekly Grocery Store Chicken Feature Activity, October 2, 2026.

USDA says the report reflects advertised prices collected through a weekly survey from major grocery retailers’ circulars and digital promotions. It is a dated market snapshot, not a live quote for a particular store. Regional tables and reporting categories show that prices vary by region and offer. The report also notes: “This week in chicken grocery features, the feature rate increased 2.4% and the activity index increased 1.4%.” That is market context, not evidence that either meal is the better value.

How to compare the value of a chicken and wings
Start with the same price unit
Check whether the chicken’s advertised price is for one bird and whether wings are priced by the pound or by the piece. A $7.86 chicken cannot be declared cheaper than $6.92-per-pound wings without knowing the bird’s weight and how much of each product will be eaten.
Account for edible food, not bone-in weight
Both a whole bird and bone-in wings include bones, so package weight is not the same as edible meat. USDA FoodData Central explains that edible portions and refuse, such as bone, are treated separately, and that portions and weights depend on the data type. It does not provide a standardized edible-yield calculation for these specific prepared retail products. Compare the portions your household expects to eat rather than applying an unsupported yield percentage. USDA FoodData Central data documentation.

Match the purchase to the meal
A whole chicken offers different cuts and may serve more than one meal if your household will eat the leftovers. Wings make sense when the planned meal is specifically wings. The useful question is how much of the food you buy will meet the meal you want—not which package looks larger or has the lower sticker price.

Does one option provide better nutrition?
There is no established, brand-neutral nutrition winner in these price figures. Prepared wings vary in breading, cooking method, sauce, and seasoning; rotisserie chicken recipes and portions also vary. USDA FoodData Central contains multiple data types, and reported values and portions differ among them. Without matched serving definitions and nutrition labels for the particular products, it is not sound to call either option categorically healthier, lower in sodium, or better protein value.
