They’re all PC options, but each changes the pace and teamwork in a different way.
Choose by the multiplayer loop you want

For tactical rounds focused on gunplay: Counter-Strike 2
Counter-Strike 2 is the most direct fit if you want coordinated team rounds where weapon use is central. Valve describes it as a free-to-play multiplayer team FPS on Steam and lists a quick 3v3 Rush mode alongside the game. That mix gives you a more deliberate core loop with a faster mode to try.

There is an important free-tier limitation: Steam Support says free players can access all game modes and matchmaking types except Premier Mode, which requires Prime Status. Check the Steam Support explanation of Prime Status before choosing it specifically for Premier.

VALORANT keeps the team-based tactical-round structure but layers in agents with distinct abilities. Riot describes a 5v5 format in which teams attack and defend across 13 rounds, with one life per round. If you enjoy planning around teammates but want character abilities to influence how a round unfolds, it is the clearest contrast with Counter-Strike 2 in this group.

Riot lists Competitive, Unranked, Deathmatch and Spike Rush on its official VALORANT page. Use those mode choices to decide whether you want a structured team contest or a different pace; availability and features can change, so check the page when downloading.
For class-based team matches: Team Fortress 2
Team Fortress 2 is the class-led alternative. Valve’s Steam listing describes it as a free-to-play class-based multiplayer FPS, with updates that add game modes, maps and equipment. Instead of choosing between round-based tactical play and battle royale, you get team matches shaped by the class you select.

To start, install Steam and download Team Fortress 2; Valve lays out installation and free-to-play account details in its official free-to-play FAQ. The FAQ also describes ways to obtain premium account status, including a store purchase. The available evidence does not establish a particular balance of casual, ranked or community-server activity, so don’t choose it expecting a specific matchmaking scene.
For squad survival and battle royale: Apex Legends
Apex Legends is the option here for larger-map squad survival rather than short, round-based tactical matches. EA says it is free to download and play on PC through the EA app and Steam. That makes it a different kind of next step after a campaign: you play with or against other people in online multiplayer rather than progressing alone through a story.

Before installing, compare your PC with EA’s Apex Legends PC system requirements. EA says its recommended specifications are intended for smooth 60 fps gameplay; that is the stated purpose of the recommendation, not a guarantee for every configuration or setting.

- Pick Counter-Strike 2 if you want coordinated tactical rounds with a direct focus on weapons, and you’re comfortable with Premier being outside the free tier.
- Pick VALORANT if you want tactical rounds but prefer agents’ abilities to add another layer to team plans.
- Pick Team Fortress 2 if class choice and class-based team matches sound more appealing than a round-based tactical format.
- Pick Apex Legends if you want squad play and battle royale survival on larger maps.
All four are online multiplayer experiences, so expect matchmaking and other players to be part of the change from a solo campaign. A headset with a microphone is optional for voice chat, not a requirement to play. Recheck each official game page for current access details and modes, and verify PC requirements where the publisher provides them.
