A rotary heat exchanger transfers heat between outgoing and incoming air with a slowly rotating, air-permeable wheel. The wheel’s matrix absorbs heat as it passes through the warmer airstream, then releases it into the cooler one. Some wheels transfer heat only; enthalpy wheels are designed to transfer moisture as well.
What is a rotary heat exchanger?
A rotary heat exchanger is an air-to-air energy recovery device, also called a heat wheel or rotary energy recovery wheel. It consists of a revolving cylinder containing porous heat-transfer material with a large internal surface area. In a ventilation system, supply air and exhaust air pass through opposite halves of the wheel.

The wheel is a regenerative exchanger: rather than keeping the two airstreams in separate fixed channels across a stationary surface, it repeatedly stores energy from one stream and carries it into the other. ASHRAE describes rotary energy recovery equipment as using an air-permeable medium designed to absorb heat and, in some designs, moisture.

- The warmer airstream heats the matrix. As one part of the wheel passes through the warmer supply or exhaust stream, the material takes up heat.
- The wheel rotates into the other airstream. Its stored heat travels with the rotating matrix from one side of the exchanger to the other.
- The matrix releases heat to the cooler stream. The cooler air picks up energy from the warmed material, and the cycle repeats continuously.
The supply and exhaust streams flow through adjacent halves of the wheel in a counterflow arrangement. The rotating matrix provides a large contact area for heat transfer while moving between the streams.

What is the difference between sensible and enthalpy wheels?
The word “heat wheel” does not by itself tell you whether the unit transfers moisture. The important distinction is the type of transfer the wheel’s media are designed to provide.

In an enthalpy wheel, a desiccant or other suitable material adsorbs or absorbs water vapor from the higher-humidity stream and releases it into the lower-humidity stream. Moving moisture transfers latent heat as well as sensible heat.

What affects a rotary heat exchanger’s performance?
A nominal effectiveness figure is only one part of an equipment comparison. Recovery and system performance depend on the device and its operating conditions, including:
- Airflow balance and air properties: Supply and exhaust flow rates and the condition of each airstream affect the transfer achieved.
- Pressure drop and fan energy: Air resistance through the exchanger contributes to the energy needed to move air.
- Leakage or carryover: Air or contaminants can transfer between airstreams, so the application and contaminant compatibility matter.
- Dew point and frost risk: Moisture conditions can affect transfer and may require frost-control measures.
- Installation constraints: Available space and the unit’s size matter alongside its recovery performance.
ASHRAE’s 2021 supplemental material reports average sensible and total heat exchanger effectiveness of 70% to 85% for equal supply and exhaust air mass flow rates and usual exchanger face velocities. This is contextual handbook information, not a rating or guarantee for a particular unit or building; actual performance depends on the exchanger, flow balance and operating conditions.

How are rotary heat exchangers controlled and maintained?
Control methods vary by system. ASHRAE describes supply-air bypass as one way to regulate discharge temperature and varying the wheel’s rotational speed as another way to control recovery. Frost-control actions may include heating supply air, stopping the wheel or defrosting, depending on climate and operating conditions.
Cleaning and service should follow the equipment manufacturer’s instructions. The required attention to drive components and other parts is equipment-specific; do not assume that a generic maintenance interval or replacement part applies to every wheel.

When is a rotary heat exchanger a useful option?
Rotary exchangers can be compact compared with fixed-plate equipment handling the same airflow, and their counterflow arrangement and small passages can support high heat or enthalpy transfer effectiveness. Those features do not make a wheel the right choice for every system. The decision also depends on pressure drop and fan energy, cross-leakage or carryover, frost management, contaminant compatibility and installation space.

In ventilation applications, the wheel captures thermal energy from outgoing extract air and transfers it to incoming fresh air as it rotates. Whether that recovery is suitable for a particular building depends on the air streams and system requirements, not on the “heat wheel” label alone.
