Roku: Locate MAC Address [Wired and Wireless Guide 2024]

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

To register, troubleshoot, or filter devices on your network, you’ll sometimes need your Roku’s MAC address—either for Wi‑Fi or for Ethernet. Roku devices expose network details through the on-screen settings, but the exact wording can vary by model and Roku OS version.

This guide covers both wired and wireless methods for 2024, plus practical alternatives (like checking your router’s client list) when the MAC value you need doesn’t appear where you expect.

What a Roku MAC Address Is (and Why You Might Need It)

A MAC address is a unique hardware identifier used by your network (router, modem, access points) to identify a device at the data-link layer. On Roku, you typically have separate MAC values for Wi‑Fi and Ethernet because those are different network interfaces.

You might need your Roku MAC address to:

  • Register the device in a network allowlist or MAC filtering rule.
  • Resolve connectivity issues with DHCP reservations (static IP assignments).
  • Identify the Roku when multiple devices show up on the router.
  • Diagnose cases where a network uses strict device registration (common in hotels and some workplaces).

Before You Start: Prerequisites and What to Expect in 2024

Before you open Roku settings, make sure your Roku is powered on and connected to the network method you’re trying to identify (Wi‑Fi for wireless MAC, Ethernet for wired MAC). If you’re offline, the interface info may be incomplete.

Also expect these realities:

  • Wi‑Fi vs Ethernet: you may need a different MAC for each interface.
  • Formatting: MAC addresses appear as 12 hexadecimal characters separated by colons (example: AA:BB:CC:11:22:33).
  • Roku OS differences: menu labels are usually consistent, but the exact path may vary slightly across models (Roku Express, Roku Streaming Stick, Roku Ultra, Roku TVs).

Find Your Roku MAC Address on Wi‑Fi (Wireless)

Use this method when your Roku is connected through Wi‑Fi.

  1. Press Home on your Roku remote.
  2. Select Settings.
  3. Choose Network.
  4. Select About (or About network, depending on your Roku version).
  5. Locate the field labeled Wi‑Fi MAC or Wireless MAC.
  6. Write down the full value exactly as shown (including colons).

If you don’t see a Wi‑Fi MAC label, look for MAC Address in the network details while the Roku is actively connected to Wi‑Fi. In some Roku builds, it may show under a general MAC label when Wi‑Fi is the active interface.

Find Your Roku MAC Address on Ethernet (Wired)

Use this method when your Roku is connected to your router via an Ethernet cable.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.
  1. Press Home.
  2. Select Settings.
  3. Choose Network.
  4. Select About (or About network).
  5. Locate a value labeled Ethernet MAC or MAC Address while the Ethernet link is active.
  6. Copy the address exactly (format is typically XX:XX:XX:XX:XX:XX).

If both Wi‑Fi and Ethernet are enabled, Roku may display separate values—or it may emphasize the currently active interface. For the most reliable result, connect Ethernet and wait until the connection is established before checking the About screen.

Common Reasons You See the Wrong MAC (and How to Fix It)

MAC mismatch is usually one of these issues.

  • You’re reading the Wi‑Fi MAC but your network needs the Ethernet MAC. Fix: unplug Ethernet (or plug it in) depending on which interface your network expects, then re-check the About screen.
  • Your router allowlist is using a different device entry. Fix: confirm the Roku is currently online, then match by MAC value using the router’s connected-device list.
  • The Roku is using a guest network or different SSID. Fix: verify the network name shown on Roku settings matches the router network where the allowlist rule applies.
  • Interface not fully connected. Fix: after connecting, wait 30–90 seconds, then return to Settings > Network > About.

Alternatives When the Roku Screen Won’t Show a MAC

On rare occasions (a frozen UI, a temporary network glitch, or a Roku software hiccup), you may not get a clean MAC value from the About screen. These alternatives still let you identify the correct MAC on a 2024 home network.

Check Your Router’s Connected-Devices List

This method is often fastest because your router knows exactly which MAC address it is currently seeing.

  1. On your Roku, confirm it’s connected and streaming or at least reachable.
  2. Open your router’s admin page in a browser (for example, http://192.168.1.1 or the address shown on your router sticker).
  3. Find a menu like Connected Devices, Device List, or DHCP Clients.
  4. Look for an entry named Roku, a similar hostname, or a device type indicator.
  5. Record the MAC address shown in that row.

Look for the MAC Matching Your Network Interface

If your router exposes separate entries for Wi‑Fi and Ethernet (or if your Roku temporarily appears twice), match the correct one by interface timing.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.
  1. Power-cycle the Roku once after switching interfaces (Wi‑Fi vs Ethernet).
  2. Watch the router’s device list refresh.
  3. Identify the MAC that appears after you connect the interface you care about.
  4. Use that MAC in your allowlist or reservation entry.

Troubleshooting: MAC Address Not Showing or Not Updating

If you can’t find the MAC on Roku, or the value you record doesn’t work in your network rule, run these checks in order.

1) Confirm the interface link is actually up

If you’re searching for Ethernet MAC, ensure the Ethernet cable is firmly seated and the router port is live. Then recheck Settings > Network > About after waiting 30–90 seconds.

2) Revisit the network About screen after a successful connection

For Wi‑Fi, go to Settings > Network and verify the Wi‑Fi status indicates connected. Then return to About and read the MAC again.

3) Restart the Roku

Restarting refreshes network reporting and can clear UI glitches.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.
  1. Press Home.
  2. Select Settings.
  3. Choose System > Power > System restart.

4) Use router identification to avoid Roku UI ambiguity

If your Roku’s About screen won’t show a Wi‑Fi MAC label clearly, record the MAC from the router’s client list while the Roku is actively online. This is usually the most reliable value for network filtering.

5) Make sure the MAC format matches what your network expects

Most systems want colon-separated format. If your allowlist form strips separators, remove colons from AA:BB:CC:11:22:33 and submit AABBCC112233 (only if the field explicitly supports it).

Quick Reference Table: Where the MAC Usually Appears

FAQs

Does Roku have one MAC address or two?

Most Roku devices effectively have separate MAC identifiers for Wi‑Fi and Ethernet. If you’re switching interfaces, treat the values as interface-specific and confirm which one your network rule is targeting.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Why does my router show a MAC address but Roku shows a different one?

Common causes include reading the wrong interface (Wi‑Fi vs Ethernet), the Roku using a different active network than you think, or updating the router’s device list after the device already disconnected/reconnected. Cross-check by reconnecting and then reading the router client row at that moment.

Can I use a MAC address from an older setup or a previous router?

For MAC filtering, use the MAC value shown by your Roku or currently reported by your router while the Roku is connected. If you submit a MAC from another network setup, it may fail if you captured the wrong interface value or if the device reported differently at the time.

What if my Roku is on a hotel or managed network and MAC filtering is enabled?

Use the MAC shown on Roku under Settings > Network > About for the active interface, then submit that exact value to the hotel’s portal. If the portal requires formatting without colons, remove separators only if the form asks for that specific format.

Bottom Line

To locate a Roku MAC address in 2024, go to Settings > Network > About and read the MAC for the interface you’re using: Wi‑Fi for wireless or Ethernet for wired. Make sure the Roku is actually connected, then record the value exactly.

If Roku’s screen isn’t clear or doesn’t show what you need, your router’s connected-devices list is the most dependable alternative—especially when you verify the MAC while the Roku is online.
