Google Chrome removes side panel button in favor of pinning

Google Chrome is changing how it exposes the Side Panel. Instead of keeping a persistent side panel button in the toolbar, Chrome is increasingly steering you toward pinning the Side Panel so it stays available when you need it.

If you noticed the button “disappeared,” don’t assume the feature is gone. In most cases, the Side Panel is still there—Chrome is just shifting the access pattern from a one-click button to a pinned state.

This guide walks through what’s likely happening, how to pin and manage the Side Panel on desktop and macOS, what to expect on iPhone and iPad, and what to do when the new UI won’t behave.

What changed in Google Chrome

Historically, Chrome made Side Panel access feel like a dedicated toolbar action: click a button, the panel opens, and you’re done. With the current UI direction, Chrome removes or hides that button and replaces it with pinning behavior—meaning the Side Panel can stay visible or readily reachable after you set it once.

In practical terms, you may see one or more of these changes:

  • The Side Panel button no longer appears in the toolbar.
  • The Side Panel can still be opened from an alternate entry point, but it’s not permanently pinned.
  • After you pin the panel, it becomes a stable UI element you can toggle without hunting for a button.
  • For some users, the change rolls out gradually via Chrome’s staged releases.

Because Chrome’s UI is updated server-side and via staged channel rollouts, you might see the change on one device before another.

Prerequisites and how to confirm you’re seeing the new UI

Before changing settings, verify that your Chrome is current and that you’re on the UI build where pinning is enabled.

Check your Chrome version

  1. Open Chrome.
  2. Go to Settings → About Chrome (or type chrome://settings/help in the address bar).
  3. Note the version and update if prompted.

For many UI rollouts, you’ll see the behavior on recent stable builds (often within the same major version line), but exact rollout timing varies by OS and region.

Confirm Side Panel still exists

Even if the toolbar button is missing, the Side Panel feature usually remains. Look for an entry point in the Side Panel gear/menu, a context action, or a pin affordance near where the panel content loads.

Pin the Side Panel so you don’t need a button

The goal is simple: pin the Side Panel once, then rely on Chrome’s pinned layout instead of expecting a permanent side panel button.

Windows, Linux, and ChromeOS (desktop)

  1. Open Chrome.
  2. Access the Side Panel using whatever entry point you still have (for example, a Side Panel prompt, a small handle, or an icon/menu where it currently appears).
  3. In the Side Panel UI, find the Pin option (the label may read Pin or show a pin icon).
  4. Click Pin to keep the panel available.
  5. Close and reopen the browser to confirm the pinned state persists.

If you can open the Side Panel but can’t find a pin option, jump to the troubleshooting section—this often indicates a rollout mismatch or a UI/extension conflict.

macOS (Chrome for Mac)

  1. Open Chrome on your Mac.
  2. Open the Side Panel from its available entry point (since the toolbar button may be absent).
  3. Locate the Pin control within the Side Panel header or header-area.
  4. Click Pin.
  5. Quit and relaunch Chrome to confirm persistence.

macOS users sometimes report different toolbar density and menu placement. Pinning is still the intended path, but the “where” can shift slightly.

iPhone and iPad (when Side Panel concepts differ)

On iOS and iPadOS, Chrome’s UI is more constrained. The exact “Side Panel” feature you see on desktop may not map 1:1 to mobile.

  1. Open Chrome on iPhone or iPad.
  2. Look for the panel/controls in the tab switcher, menu button, or within the page’s UI controls.
  3. If you see a pin-like option, enable it; otherwise, rely on the available mobile access pattern for the feature you want (bookmarks, downloads, reading list, etc.).

If your goal is quick access to the same tools you used via the Side Panel on desktop, focus on the pinned state or shortcut that iOS supports for that specific feature.

If pinning doesn’t work: troubleshooting checklist

When Chrome removes a button, it can make problems harder to spot. Use this checklist in order. Most fixes come from a version update, a pinned-state reset, or resolving an extension conflict.

Check side panel availability and gestures

  • Try reopening the Side Panel and look for a Pin control again—some panels only show the pin affordance when first opened.
  • If your device uses a trackpad, test whether a swipe/gesture reveals the panel in the current UI layout.
  • Confirm you’re in the browser’s normal UI mode (not an embedded or special view where the panel UI changes).

Reset Chrome settings related to UI and extensions

Rather than wiping everything, start targeted. If Chrome is acting like the UI is stuck, resetting can restore expected defaults.

  1. Go to chrome://settings/reset.
  2. Choose Restore settings to their original defaults.
  3. Restart Chrome and attempt pinning again.

This usually keeps bookmarks and passwords, but it may disable extensions and reset certain permissions—so note your installed extensions first.

Disable conflicting extensions

Extensions that modify the toolbar, sidebars, or new tab UI can break pinning. A quick binary test saves time.

  1. Open chrome://extensions.
  2. Toggle extensions off one by one (start with anything that changes the toolbar, reader view, or sidebar-like UI).
  3. After each change, relaunch Chrome and test pinning.

If the pin option returns after disabling a specific extension, keep it disabled or update it to the latest version.

Clear site data vs. full cache

If the Side Panel content depends on a particular site (or a site-based extension), clearing only that site’s data is often the safest step.

  1. Open Settings → Privacy and security → Site settings.
  2. Search for the site that triggers the problem.
  3. Open it and clear relevant data.

A full cache clear is rarely necessary for a UI button removal issue, but if pinning is broken everywhere, you can consider clearing cached images/files via Chrome settings as a broader reset.

Update Chrome and remove old profiles from testing

UI rollouts can differ between profiles and devices. If you’re testing in the wrong profile, you’ll chase ghosts.

  1. Update Chrome via About Chrome.
  2. Switch to another Chrome profile and test pinning there.
  3. If it works in a fresh profile, you can migrate or reconfigure settings in the original profile gradually.

For power users: confirm you’re not using a managed enterprise policy that locks UI behavior.

Managing pinned behavior: hide, unpin, and re-enable

Once pinned, you’ll want control. Chrome typically offers an Unpin option, and sometimes a toggle to show/hide the panel while keeping it pinned.

  1. Open the Side Panel.
  2. Find the pin control (it may switch from Pin to Unpin).
  3. Use Unpin if you want the panel to stop staying readily available.
  4. If you just want it temporarily out of view, look for a collapse or hide option in the panel header.

If you unpin and the panel becomes “hard to find,” repin it. That’s the new expected workflow.

Why Chrome removed the button (practical impact)

Chrome’s UI teams generally aim to reduce redundant controls. A persistent button can create clutter in toolbars, especially as Chrome adds more actions. Pinning shifts the decision from “always on” to “only when you’ve asked for persistent access.”

Practically, the change is good for frequent Side Panel users: once pinned, you stop scanning the toolbar for a missing icon. It’s also better for casual users because the UI isn’t permanently crowded.

The tradeoff is discoverability. If you don’t see the new pin control, you’ll think the feature vanished.

Alternatives if you need quick access

If you’re not ready to pin, or you just need fast access while you figure out the new placement, use one of these practical alternatives.

Use keyboard shortcuts (where supported)

Some Chrome features support shortcuts even when the UI button is removed. If you’re using the Side Panel for a specific function (downloads, reading list, or tool-based panels), shortcut availability depends on that feature.

Try these general approaches:

  • Search in Chrome settings for the specific feature name and check shortcut options.
  • Look for keyboard hints in the Side Panel header area when it’s open.
  • On macOS, remember many shortcuts differ by Command vs Control.

Use bookmarks bar and tab search

If the Side Panel you cared about is basically an access hub, bookmarks and tab search can replace a lot of the “panel utility.”

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.
  1. Enable the Bookmarks bar via Settings → Appearance.
  2. Use Ctrl+L (Windows/Linux) or Command+L (macOS), then type to jump via address bar search and bookmarks.

Switch to another workflow

If your Side Panel was primarily for a specific tool (like a browser workflow extension), consider whether the extension offers a pinned layout, a toolbar icon, or a separate shortcut you can enable.

Common mistakes

  • Assuming the Side Panel is disabled. In most cases, it’s still available—you just don’t get the button you used to.
  • Pinning the panel content instead of the panel itself. Some pages/extensions expose their own “pin,” but Chrome’s panel pin control is the one you need to keep the panel accessible.
  • Testing in only one profile. UI rollouts and extension states can vary by profile.
  • Leaving extensions enabled while troubleshooting. Toolbar/UI extensions are a common cause of missing or broken controls.

FAQs about the side panel button removal and pinning

Did Chrome remove the Side Panel entirely?

No—Chrome is changing how you access it. The button may be hidden or removed, but the Side Panel feature should still exist and can usually be pinned from within the panel UI.

Why can I pin the Side Panel on one device but not another?

Chrome UI rollouts are staged and can differ by OS, version, and managed settings. Also, extensions and profile-specific settings can affect what controls appear.

How do I get the side panel button back?

With the new UI direction, the “button back” outcome isn’t the goal. Instead, pin the Side Panel so it remains accessible without needing that button.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Will pinning persist after updates or restarts?

Usually, yes. Chrome typically preserves pinned UI states across restarts and updates, but a reset or extension change can revert it.

Does pinning affect performance?

Generally, pinned UI adds minimal overhead, but heavy Side Panel content (tabs, integrations, or resource-heavy extensions) can affect responsiveness. If performance drops, unpin and test.

Bottom Line

If your Google Chrome side panel button disappeared, the feature almost certainly isn’t gone—it’s being replaced by pinning. Open the Side Panel from its current entry point, use the Pin control, and confirm the pinned state persists.

If pinning doesn’t appear, work through updates, profile differences, and extension conflicts. Once pinning is set, Chrome’s new UI tends to feel faster because you stop relying on a single toolbar button that may not stay visible.
