Set up a RAD3 server with the exact Minecraft 1.20.1 Forge release and its matching official server pack. Install Forge into a clean directory, start it with the generated run.bat or run.sh script, allocate memory in user_jvm_args.txt, accept the EULA, then align every player’s client with the same RAD3 release. The official project does not publish a fixed RAM requirement, so tune memory against your actual player count, view distance and exploration load.

What RAD3 is and which versions must match
Roguelike Adventures and Dungeons 3 (RAD3) is a Forge modpack for Minecraft 1.20.1. Its developer describes it as the official spiritual successor to Roguelike Adventures and Dungeons and Roguelike Adventures and Dungeons 2, combining RPG progression, roguelike and roguelite ideas, dungeon delving and exploration. The checked CurseForge project listing showed the current release as RAD3-0.24 and the corresponding server artifact as RAD3-1.20.1-Serverpack-0.24, updated October 8, 2026. That listing reported 136,149 total downloads on the same date.

A working installation depends on four items agreeing: Minecraft 1.20.1, the Forge loader, the RAD3 client release and the RAD3 server-pack release. If one of those differs, treat the mismatch as the first thing to correct before changing Java flags or world files.

Later RAD3 releases may use different files. Always select one release first, then download the server pack carrying that exact release number instead of mixing files from separate versions.

Download the official server pack
Use the developer’s official RAD3 project on CurseForge. The project states that official packs by dreams are distributed through CurseForge and warns that unofficial reuploads are unsupported and may violate its terms. A third-party archive can be incomplete, modified or tied to a different release, so it is not a safe substitute for the project’s server-pack download.
- Open the RAD3 project page on CurseForge and identify the release you intend to run.
- Download the server-pack artifact whose Minecraft, Forge and RAD3 versions match that release. For the listing checked on October 8, 2026, that artifact was
RAD3-1.20.1-Serverpack-0.24. - Keep the downloaded archive intact until you have created a dedicated server directory. Do not overwrite an existing world or configuration tree before making a backup.
- Download the matching client profile through the same official project so players can install the identical release.
The server pack is preferable to copying a client instance. Forge’s documentation distinguishes server installation from client installation, and the RAD3 project publishes a dedicated server artifact for that purpose.
Prepare Forge in a clean server directory
Forge’s server installation flow is the supported way to create the launch files used by modern Forge servers. Use a directory reserved for this one RAD3 instance; mixing files from another modpack makes version and configuration errors difficult to diagnose.
- Create the folder. Choose a location with enough free storage for the server files, generated world and backups. Give the account that will run the server read and write permission to this folder.
- Run the matching Forge installer. Open the official Forge installer for Minecraft 1.20.1 and select Install server. Point it at the new RAD3 directory. Forge’s FAQ specifically instructs administrators to choose this server option and place the installation in the desired folder.
- Extract the RAD3 server pack. Unpack the downloaded RAD3 server archive into the Forge server directory, preserving its folders and configuration files. If the archive contains instructions or a required layout, follow that layout rather than flattening every file into one level.
- Check the generated launch files. A successful Forge installation provides
run.batfor Windows andrun.shfor Linux or macOS, along withuser_jvm_args.txt. Those scripts are the normal startup path documented by Forge. - Verify the Java runtime. Modern Minecraft versions use modern Java features. Confirm that the Java runtime available to the server account is suitable for the Forge installer and for Minecraft 1.20.1 before troubleshooting mod errors.
Some managed-host control panels use a different upload or installer workflow. Forge’s server-files README notes that provider procedures vary; on a panel, follow that provider’s Forge installation method and then verify that it is using the exact RAD3 server-pack files.
Configure memory in user_jvm_args.txt
Forge’s FAQ says to change server RAM in user_jvm_args.txt, not by replacing the generated launch command with an improvised direct-jar command. The file is read by run.bat or run.sh, so edit the JVM arguments there and continue launching through the script.

user_jvm_args.txtin a plain-text editor. - Set the JVM memory flags your deployment requires, using the syntax accepted by your Java runtime (for example, an
-Xmsinitial heap value and an-Xmxmaximum heap value). - Save the file, close any old server process and start with
run.baton Windows orrun.shon Linux/macOS. - Observe startup logs and in-game performance, then adjust the values between maintenance windows.
RAD3’s official page does not publish a numeric minimum, recommended allocation or player-count-to-RAM table. Do not treat a number copied from a different modpack as an RAD3 requirement. Forge also warns that both too little and excessive allocation can reduce performance. Tune the heap to the actual deployment: concurrent players, view distance, how many people are exploring new terrain, and how many chunks remain loaded all change the demand.

If the server repeatedly runs out of heap or stalls while generating terrain, increase resources in controlled steps and check whether view distance or simultaneous exploration is the real cause. If the host begins swapping or the operating system has too little memory left for Java and background services, reduce the allocation instead of assuming more is always better.
Start the server and complete first-run files
Run the generated script from the server directory so Forge can create its libraries, logs and initial configuration.
- On Windows, launch
run.bat. On Linux or macOS, makerun.shexecutable if necessary and run it from a terminal in the server directory. - Wait for the first startup to finish or stop with a clear prompt. The initial run normally creates files including
eula.txtand the server configuration tree. - Open
eula.txt, read Mojang’s terms and change the acceptance entry as required by the Java Edition server instructions. The server will not continue until the EULA is accepted. - Start the same script again. Watch the console for a successful server-ready message and for any missing-mod, Java or permission error.
- Stop the process cleanly from the server console before editing pack files, replacing versions or making backups.
Do not delete eula.txt or repeatedly restart without reading the first error. A clean first run gives you a known baseline from which to diagnose later configuration or connection problems.
Set server.properties and pack configuration
After accepting the EULA, edit server.properties for the rules that should apply to everyone. The exact options available depend on the Minecraft and Forge build, but common decisions include:

- difficulty and gameplay rules;
- view distance and simulation distance, which affect CPU, memory and terrain generation;
- maximum player count;
- whitelist and operator access;
- spawn and world-generation choices;
- network and authentication settings appropriate to your environment.
RAD3 also ships pack configuration files. Change only the settings you understand, keep a copy of the original file and stop the server before editing. A configuration written for another RAD3 release can reference different mods or keys and may prevent startup.
Keep server-side decisions documented for players. RAD3 has quests, a reward and shop system, passive skills, scaling mob difficulty, enhanced AI, movement abilities, magic, companions, relics, backpacks, equipment modifiers and endgame items. Players will have a smoother first session when they know which rules are intentional rather than assuming a surprising mechanic is a bug.
Plan progression for a multiplayer world
RAD3 is exploration-led rather than technology-tree-led. The project’s stated vision is a pack without an overloaded technology focus, with progression built around discovering locations, clearing dungeons, improving equipment and reaching new dimensions.
Explain what is available early
Most content is not hard-gated behind Stages: players can do almost everything from the start. That openness makes a shared server flexible, but it also means a new player can encounter advanced systems before understanding the quest book. Introduce the quest system during onboarding and point players to its rewards and shop.
Set expectations for dimensions
Some recipes require travel to other dimensions or defeating bosses. Dimension access is organized consecutively, and waystones are intentionally harder to craft. Tell players that finding a recipe they cannot craft yet may indicate progression rather than a broken installation.

Use the pack’s content as a server route
The included Aether, Undergarden, Lands of Icaria, Bumblezone, Dimensional Dungeons and Mining Dimension provide distinct exploration goals. Custom structures and dungeons, Tectonic terrain and Spelunkery mining make world generation and cave exploration central activities. Bosses guard powerful items, while optional hard mode, scaling mobs and enhanced AI can raise the risk for established groups.
Protect shared progression
Because quests, dimensions, boss drops and gear modifiers create persistent state, avoid casually removing mods or changing world-generation settings after players have explored widely. Before an upgrade, stop the server, back up the world and configuration, and record the old RAD3 and server-pack release. If a change fails, restore the complete known-good set rather than copying only a single region or config file.
Connect players with matching clients
Every player should install the same Minecraft 1.20.1 Forge profile and RAD3 release used by the server. A client from a different release can fail during handshake, report missing or extra mods, reject registry entries or disconnect while loading a dimension.
- Ask the player to record the Minecraft version, Forge version and RAD3 release shown by their launcher.
- Compare those values with the server’s selected release and the name of the server-pack archive.
- Have the player remove or disable competing profiles so the launcher starts the intended RAD3 instance.
- After a pack update, require every player to update before reconnecting; do not allow a mixed-version group to test against a live world.
If a client still cannot connect after versions match, inspect the server console at the exact connection time. Look for a Java startup problem, a missing dependency, a rejected registry entry, authentication failure or a network rule blocking the host. On a managed panel, confirm that the panel has imported the complete server pack rather than only a subset of the client’s mods.

Self-hosting versus managed Minecraft Forge hosting
Both models can run RAD3. The practical choice depends on whether you want to operate the Java process and network yourself or pay a provider to automate part of that work. A provider is not automatically compatible: verify support for the exact RAD3 release, Minecraft 1.20.1, Forge and the official server-pack import process before committing.

Self-hosting is a good fit when you already control a reliable machine and want unrestricted access to files and JVM settings. Managed hosting is attractive when uptime, remote access and automated operations matter more than owning the full stack. In either case, keep an independent backup before a pack upgrade.
Upgrade RAD3 safely
Do not replace files while the server is running. A RAD3 update can change recipes, dimensions, entity data, quests or configuration keys, and those changes can affect an established world.

- Download the new official RAD3 server pack and verify its Minecraft and Forge target.
- Install or update Forge as required by that release in a staging directory first when possible.
- Apply the pack files without deleting the backup, start once and read the logs for migration or missing-file errors.
- Test login, quests, dimensions, boss encounters and a representative exploration route before reopening the server.
- Distribute the matching client release to every player and require them to update before reconnecting.
If the update fails, stop the process and restore the prior world, configuration and server-pack files as a set. Keeping only the old world while mixing new mods or configs can produce a different failure than the one you are trying to recover from.
A practical launch checklist
- Selected one RAD3 release and its matching official server-pack archive.
- Confirmed Minecraft 1.20.1 and Forge on both server and clients.
- Installed Forge with Install server in a clean directory.
- Kept the generated
run.batorrun.shas the startup entry point. - Configured memory in
user_jvm_args.txtand avoided claiming an unsupported fixed RAM requirement. - Accepted the EULA in the active server directory.
- Reviewed

With those checks complete, RAD3’s exploration, quests, dimensions, dungeons and boss progression can provide a coherent shared campaign without relying on unsupported reuploads or invented hardware specifications.
