Ansible Vault encrypts passwords, API keys, certificates, and other sensitive values so they are not stored as readable plaintext in playbooks, roles, or variable files. The practical workflow is to choose file-level or variable-level encryption, create the ciphertext with ansible-vault, provide the password securely at runtime, and suppress output that could reveal decrypted values.
Antihost offers Linux VPS plans with full root access, unlimited traffic on a 1 Gbps port and a 14-day free trial.
Vault protects data at rest, not every place a secret appears during a run. A safe implementation therefore combines encryption with careful variable structure, protected password sources, environment-specific vault IDs, deliberate rotation, and no_log on tasks that handle secrets.

What Ansible Vault protects—and what it does not
Ansible Vault is Ansible’s built-in mechanism for encrypting sensitive data such as passwords and keys. It can encrypt an entire YAML file or a single variable value. An encrypted file can be committed to a repository or copied between systems without exposing its contents, provided the vault password is kept elsewhere.
The boundary is important: Ansible’s documentation describes Vault as protection for data at rest. During playbook execution, Ansible must decrypt values in memory. A task can then disclose them through standard output, debugging, error messages, callbacks, fact collection, or an improperly handled destination file. Treat Vault as one control in a broader secret-handling design, not as a guarantee that a secret can never be observed.

Choose the encryption scope first
Decide whether reviewers should be able to read the surrounding YAML and whether the data will need frequent password rotation. The two modes have different operational trade-offs.
| Decision point | File-level encryption | Variable-level encryption |
|---|---|---|
| Command | ansible-vault create or ansible-vault encrypt |
ansible-vault encrypt_string |
| What is hidden | The complete file, including variable names, values, comments, and YAML structure | Only the selected value; surrounding YAML remains readable |
| Review ergonomics | Reviewers cannot inspect ordinary diffs without decrypting the file | Variable names, references, and non-secret settings remain easy to review |
| Rotation | Use ansible-vault rekey when the old password is available |
No direct rekey operation; generate a new encrypted value and replace the old block |
| Best fit | A complete secrets file or any file whose variable names are themselves sensitive | A few credentials embedded in an otherwise readable variables file |
| Tasks and handlers | Can make a whole YAML file opaque, including task or handler definitions | Designed for individual values; task and handler logic stays readable |
Use file-level encryption when concealing the structure is part of the requirement or when a file is almost entirely secret data. Use variable-level encryption when code review and readable configuration matter more than one-command rotation. Many teams keep a readable variables file containing ordinary names and references, while placing the encrypted values in a separate file.
Prepare a safe Vault layout
Before encrypting anything, establish a predictable location and naming convention. For example, a role or inventory can load a readable file and a vaulted file:
group_vars/all/vars.yml
group_vars/all/vault.yml
In the readable file, map the name used by tasks to the name stored in the vault:
db_password: '{{ vault_db_password }}'
The encrypted file contains vault_db_password. Tasks use db_password, so most of the playbook remains understandable without exposing the credential. Keep names that reveal sensitive system details out of a file when using file-level encryption; the whole file, including names and comments, is otherwise visible only after decryption.
Prerequisites and checks
- Install a supported Ansible distribution and verify that the
ansible-vaultcommand is on the same administration machine used to run the playbook. - Choose where the password will come from: an interactive prompt, a protected file, or an executable client script.
- Ensure the account running Ansible can read that source, while other users cannot. A plain password file should normally be restricted to its owner, such as with mode
600on Unix-like systems. - Decide whether development, staging, and production need separate vault IDs before encrypting the first file.
Create and manage an encrypted file
File-level encryption is the simplest approach when a file consists mainly of secrets.

- Create a new encrypted file. Run
ansible-vault create secrets.yml. Ansible opens an editor, asks for the vault password, and saves the file in encrypted form when you exit. - Encrypt an existing plaintext file. Run
ansible-vault encrypt existing.yml. Confirm the password when prompted. Do not leave the original plaintext copy in a backup directory, temporary folder, or untracked file. - Inspect it safely. Use
ansible-vault view secrets.ymlwhen you need to read the decrypted content without permanently converting the file to plaintext. - Edit it in place. Use
ansible-vault edit secrets.yml. Ansible decrypts to a temporary editing buffer and re-encrypts when the editor closes. - Decrypt only when necessary.
ansible-vault decrypt secrets.ymlwrites plaintext to disk. Treat this as a controlled migration step, remove the plaintext promptly, and check temporary files and backups afterward.
Encrypted files normally begin with an Ansible Vault header rather than ordinary YAML. That header is useful for recognizing that a file is vaulted, but it does not make the password recoverable if it is lost.
Use the file in a playbook
Ansible automatically decrypts a vaulted variable file when it loads it and the correct password is supplied. You can also list it explicitly:
- name: Configure the application
a hosts: app
vars_files:
- group_vars/all/vault.yml
tasks:
- name: Configure database credentials
ansible.builtin.template:
src: app.conf.j2
dest: /etc/example/app.conf
mode: '0600'
no_log: true
The no_log setting is deliberately applied to the task because rendered content or module arguments could contain the decrypted password. Use it selectively: hiding an entire play can make failures difficult to diagnose, so remove or narrow it while troubleshooting in a controlled environment, then restore it.
Encrypt one variable while keeping YAML readable
Variable-level encryption is useful when only a few values are sensitive. Generate a YAML assignment with:

Reference the variable normally in a task or through the readable mapping shown earlier. Ansible decrypts the value when it evaluates the variable.
Rotate a variable-level secret
Variable-level ciphertext cannot be rekeyed directly with ansible-vault rekey. To rotate it:
The Tool Desk
Outbyte Driver Updater FREEScan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minuteDriver Scan →Outbyte PC Repair FREERepair Windows errors before they cause bigger problemsFix Now →- Generate a new encrypted string using the new value and the intended vault password.
- Replace the complete old
!vaultblock in the variables file. - Update the service or system that consumes the credential if it also requires a change.
- Run a limited playbook check with the new password source, then remove any temporary plaintext or generated files.
If frequent rotation is expected, a dedicated vaulted file may be easier to operate because the file-level rekey command can change its encryption password without replacing each value.
Supply the vault password at runtime
Ansible supports several password sources. Choose one that matches the environment and keep the source itself protected.
| Method | Example | When it fits | Important caution |
|---|---|---|---|
| Interactive prompt | ansible-playbook site.yml --ask-vault-pass |
Manual runs where an operator can type the password | Not suitable for unattended jobs |
| Protected password file | ansible-playbook site.yml --vault-password-file ~/.config/ansible/prod.pass |
Scheduled jobs or a controlled workstation | The file contains the password in plain text; restrict its permissions and storage |
| Executable client script | ansible-playbook site.yml --vault-password-file ~/.config/ansible/get-vault-pass |
A script that retrieves a password from an approved secret-management system | The script must have executable permissions and print only the password |
| Labeled vault ID | ansible-playbook site.yml --vault-id prod@prompt |
Runs involving a named environment or more than one password | A label is a selection hint, not a cryptographic boundary |
Ansible documentation states that a password source can be either a plain-text file or an executable script that returns the password. Keep scripts quiet: diagnostic text on standard output can be interpreted as part of the password. Send diagnostics to standard error instead.
Set a recurring default
For repeatable automation, configure the default password file in ansible.cfg:

[defaults]
vault_password_file = ~/.config/ansible/prod.pass
You can also use the documented environment setting ANSIBLE_VAULT_PASSWORD_FILE. A configured default reduces command-line mistakes, but it also means every process using that configuration can attempt to read the password source. Use separate configuration and operating-system accounts where environments have different trust levels.
Use vault IDs to separate environments
A single password is simple, but it creates a large blast radius: anyone who obtains it can try to decrypt every file protected with that password. Vault IDs let you label passwords such as dev, stage, and prod. Encrypt new content with a label and provide the corresponding source when running the playbook.
ansible-vault encrypt --vault-id prod@prompt group_vars/prod/vault.yml
ansible-playbook site.yml --vault-id prod@prompt --vault-id dev@~/.config/ansible/dev.pass
When multiple passwords are supplied, Ansible tries the password associated with the matching label first and then follows its documented behavior with other supplied secrets. Labels therefore improve organization and reduce accidental use of the wrong password, but they do not replace access control. A user who possesses all password sources can still decrypt all corresponding files.
| Operating model | One password | Multiple vault IDs |
|---|---|---|
| Small team or one environment | Lowest setup and CI complexity | May add unnecessary configuration |
| Separate development and production | One leak can expose both environments | Limits routine access and reduces blast radius |
| Large team with different duties | Hard to grant least privilege | Allows password sources to follow environment or trust boundaries |
| CI/CD | One injected secret is easy to wire | Requires explicit label-to-secret mapping and careful job configuration |
| Rotation | One password change affects every encrypted file | Rotate one environment or boundary independently |
Choose IDs before files spread across repositories. Changing labels later is manageable, but auditing which password protects which file becomes harder as the inventory grows.

Rekey a file-encrypted file
When you know the old password, run:
ansible-vault rekey group_vars/prod/vault.yml
Ansible asks for the existing password and then for the new one. Test the rekeyed file with a playbook invocation using the new password source before deleting or disabling the old source. If the old password is unavailable, the ciphertext cannot be converted by Ansible; restore the secret from an approved backup or recreate the values and encrypt them anew.
Coordinate rotation across automation
- Change the password in the protected file, script, or secret-management entry first, or prepare both sources during a controlled transition.
- Rekey each file that uses the old password, keeping environment boundaries explicit.
- Update CI/CD jobs, operator configuration, and recovery documentation.
- Run a read-only check or narrowly scoped playbook with the new source.
- Revoke or delete the old password source only after every consumer has succeeded.
For variable-level encryption, replace each encrypted block with newly generated ciphertext instead of attempting rekey. Keep the change auditable without committing the plaintext value.
Best Value
Prevent disclosure after decryption
Vault does not automatically redact every place a variable can appear. Add no_log: true to tasks that pass secrets to modules, commands, templates, or handlers. Be especially careful with shell commands: command-line arguments can be captured by logs or process inspection even when the task itself is vaulted.
- Do not use
debugto print a secret or an entire variable dictionary containing one. - Check failure output and callback plugins; a failed module can echo arguments or rendered content.
- Restrict permissions on files created from decrypted templates or copies, and remove temporary files when they are no longer needed.
- Remember that a vaulted source sent to a managed host arrives decrypted. Vault protects the repository and transfer workflow, not the final plaintext file.
- Document which operators and automation accounts can read each password source.
Use the narrowest practical scope for no_log. It is a disclosure control, but it also removes useful diagnostics from normal output.

Common failure modes and fixes
Decryption fails or Ansible says the password is incorrect
Confirm that the command is using the intended password source and vault ID. Check for a script that prints extra text, a password file with unintended whitespace, or a configuration file that silently supplies a different default. With multiple IDs, verify the label attached to the encrypted content and provide the corresponding source.
The variable is undefined
Verify that the vaulted file is loaded through inventory discovery, vars_files, or the role’s variable structure. Check spelling and the distinction between the ordinary reference such as db_password and the encrypted variable such as vault_db_password. A correctly decrypted value is still unavailable if its file is never loaded.
A secret appears in output
Find the task, handler, callback, or debug statement that emitted it and add an appropriate no_log control. Inspect failed runs and controller logs, not only the normal success output. Rotate the exposed credential if it may have been stored in a shared log or artifact.
Git diffs are unreadable
That is expected for file-level encryption. Review the decrypted file only in a controlled environment, or use variable-level encryption when readable surrounding YAML and useful diffs are more important than hiding the file structure.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minute2Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problems3Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitchesYou need to change the password for an encrypted string
There is no direct variable-level rekey operation. Generate a replacement encrypted string, update the file, validate it with the new password, and remove temporary material.
A vaulted file works on the controller but leaves plaintext on a host
Inspect the module’s destination and permissions. Modules that deliver a vaulted src decrypt it before writing. Set restrictive modes, limit access on the target, and remove the file if the application can consume the secret through a safer mechanism.
Quick Recap
A practical operating checklist
- Classify each value and decide whether its name and surrounding YAML are sensitive.
- Select file-level encryption for opaque secret files or variable-level encryption for readable configuration with isolated secrets.
- Store ordinary variable references separately from encrypted values where that improves review.
- Choose an interactive prompt, protected file, or executable password client for each execution context.
- Use distinct vault IDs when environments or trust boundaries should not share a password.
- Apply
no_logto tasks that could reveal decrypted arguments or results. - Audit target-host files, temporary directories, logs, and CI artifacts after a run.
- Document and test the rekey procedure, including who can access old and new password sources.
- Rotate file-level content with
ansible-vault rekey; replace variable-level ciphertext with a newly generated block. - Test recovery with a clean controller or operator account so a hidden dependency on a local password file is discovered before an incident.
