Rocky Linux 10 for Ubuntu Users: What to Check Before Switching

Rocky Linux 10 may suit Ubuntu users who need an Enterprise Linux environment, but check hardware, vendor support and migration costs before planning a clean install.

Rocky Linux 10 can be a good fit if you need an Enterprise Linux environment and your hardware and software support it. It is not a drop-in replacement for Ubuntu: check your CPU, application compatibility and support needs first, then plan a fresh installation and restore your data and services. The choice depends on your workload and support arrangement, not on one distribution being universally better.

Which Rocky Linux 10 release is current, and how long is it supported?

Rocky Linux 10, codenamed “Red Quartz,” was released on June 11, 2025. Rocky Linux’s releases page lists version 10.2, released May 29, 2026, as the current minor release. Rocky says only the latest minor release is supported, so keep a Rocky 10 system updated rather than treating an older point release as a supported stopping point. Rocky Linux releases and lifecycle

The Rocky Linux lifecycle page lists active support for Rocky 10 through May 31, 2030, and end of life on May 31, 2035. These are different milestones: check the project’s lifecycle details when you need to know what support applies to a deployment at a particular date. Rocky Linux releases and lifecycle

Will Rocky Linux 10 run on your hardware?

For AMD and Intel x86-64 systems, Rocky Linux 10 requires the x86-64-v3 instruction-set baseline. It no longer supports x86-64-v2 or 32-bit x86 compatibility. This makes the CPU a go/no-go check for older desktops and servers; do not infer compatibility from the fact that a machine currently runs Ubuntu. Rocky also lists riscv64, aarch64, ppc64le and s390x as supported architecture families. Rocky Linux 10 release notes

Ubuntu 26.04 LTS lists amd64, armhf, arm64, s390x, riscv64 and ppc64el-p9 as supported architectures, but that list does not establish the same x86 microarchitecture requirement as Rocky’s x86-64-v3 baseline. The architecture names overlap in broad categories, not necessarily in processor eligibility. Ubuntu release lifecycle and architectures

How does Rocky’s support horizon compare with Ubuntu’s?

Ubuntu releases a version every six months, with an LTS release every two years. Canonical says LTS releases receive five years of standard security maintenance; Ubuntu Pro is an additional coverage option with its own terms, not part of standard maintenance. Canonical’s Ubuntu release lifecycle

Ubuntu 26.04 LTS was released on April 23, 2026. Its release notes say it will receive security updates and critical bug fixes for five years, through April 2031; Canonical’s lifecycle page lists standard security maintenance through May 2031. Because the official pages express the endpoint differently, treat them as the sources’ respective labels rather than a single more precise date. Compare the coverage you actually need: Rocky’s major-version lifecycle and latest-minor requirement, or Ubuntu’s LTS standard maintenance and any Ubuntu Pro coverage you hold. Neither date alone tells you whether a particular application vendor, driver or management agent supports your system.

What changes in the installer and day-to-day setup?

Rocky Linux 10 changes several installation expectations that may matter if you are used to Ubuntu:

  • Administrator access: the root account is disabled by default; setup expects an administrative user who can use sudo.
  • Remote graphical installation: Rocky uses RDP rather than VNC for graphical remote access during installation.
  • Third-party repositories: the graphical installer no longer supports adding them during setup. Rocky identifies the inst.addrepo boot option or Kickstart as alternatives.

These are installer behaviors, not a complete comparison of the distributions’ administration workflows. Ubuntu groups packages into Main, Restricted, Universe and Multiverse, and its lifecycle information describes deb packages as the core collection alongside snaps that can update independently. Expect a different package and repository ecosystem on Rocky, and confirm the procedures your organization or software vendors require. Should you install Rocky over Ubuntu or convert the existing system?

Plan on a clean installation rather than an in-place Ubuntu-to-Rocky conversion. Rocky’s documentation says it does not support upgrades to a new major release and recommends a fresh install for moves from Rocky 8.x or 9.x to Rocky 10. That guidance concerns Rocky-to-Rocky major-version upgrades; it does not document a supported way to convert Ubuntu into Rocky. 1. Check requirements first: verify Rocky’s CPU baseline or supported architecture and confirm that each required application, driver, management agent and support contract covers Rocky Linux 10.
  2. Back up and inventory: preserve important files and application data, and record services, configuration, users and dependencies you will need to restore.
  3. Install cleanly: use installation media or the deployment method appropriate to your physical, virtual or cloud environment.
  4. Restore deliberately: bring back data and configuration selectively, then validate services and application behavior before relying on the system.
  5. Keep a rollback route: retain the ability to return to the working Ubuntu environment until the Rocky deployment has passed your checks.

For ISO-based installation, Ubuntu 26.04’s release notes specify a USB port or DVD drive. Rocky also makes installation media available. A USB flash drive can therefore be useful for a physical ISO installation, but the cited documentation does not specify a required capacity, speed or model. Cloud images, virtual machines and other deployment types may use different methods. Ubuntu 26.04 installation notes Rocky Linux 10.0 availability announcement

When is Rocky Linux 10 the better fit for an Ubuntu user?

Choose based on the system you need to operate, not distribution preference in the abstract. Rocky is worth considering when an Enterprise Linux environment is a requirement and your hardware and software vendors support Rocky 10. Staying with Ubuntu may be more practical when your existing services, operational procedures or vendor support are built around Ubuntu and a switch would add migration work without a clear benefit.

  • Workload and vendor support: obtain explicit compatibility confirmation for the target distribution and version; no general compatibility claim can substitute for checking your own applications and drivers.
  • Hardware: verify x86-64-v3 eligibility for AMD or Intel x86-64 machines, or confirm that your platform is among Rocky’s listed supported architectures.
  • Support horizon: compare the applicable Rocky lifecycle with Ubuntu’s standard maintenance and any Ubuntu Pro coverage actually available to you.
  • Operational workflow: account for repository and package differences, installer choices and the administrative-user default.
  • Migration effort: budget for a clean install, restoration, service validation and rollback rather than assuming a direct conversion.

Ubuntu 26.04’s release notes give desktop comfort figures of a 2 GHz dual-core processor or better, at least 6 GB RAM and 25 GB free storage. They give server starting points as low as 1.5 GB RAM and 4 GB storage, depending on use case. These are Ubuntu-specific figures, not Rocky requirements or a performance comparison.
