Robot Vacuum Privacy: What Home Mapping Data Is Collected and How to Limit It

Robot vacuums may collect maps, room details, Wi-Fi and operating data. See what manufacturers disclose and which settings can limit collection.
Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

A connected robot vacuum can collect more than a floorplan: depending on the brand and model, its app or cloud service may also handle room names, robot movements, Wi-Fi details, device status, and information about objects or floor types. Some maps are stored in a manufacturer’s cloud, while camera images and operational data follow separate rules. To limit collection, check the privacy settings for your exact model and understand which app features stop working when mapping is disabled.

What data can a robot vacuum collect?

There is no single data set shared by every robot vacuum. Policies and features differ by manufacturer, model, app version, and account region. For example, iRobot’s current US privacy policy describes several categories of data associated with its connected devices:

As an Amazon Associate I earn from qualifying purchases.

  • Device and app use: device name and number, battery life, mission information, health, and operating data.
  • Maintenance: information such as whether filters or other parts need replenishment.
  • Environment and connectivity: dirt level, Wi-Fi name, credentials and signal strength, robot movement, floorplans, room names, objects, floor type, and other iRobot devices.
  • Connected services: names of smart-home partner apps.

These are categories iRobot lists in its own policy, not a description of every brand. The policy says this device data is stored in a deidentified state. It also says that ordinary devices in the described smart-technology category do not automatically transmit the information unless registered online and connected through Wi-Fi, Bluetooth, or the internet; iRobot Select devices are an exception because they require a connection to operate. The policy describes controls to decline map transmission and, on eligible devices, to opt into sharing obstacle images. iRobot’s US privacy policy

Does a robot vacuum upload a map of the house?

It depends on the product and its settings. iRobot Support says Smart Maps are stored in the cloud, rather than only in the app. Its guidance says disabling Mapping Features stops spatial data from being sent to iRobot’s cloud servers. That setting is a meaningful privacy trade-off, not a universal “local-only” mode for all robot vacuums. iRobot Support’s map and privacy guidance

Roborock’s US materials describe different data practices and explicitly caution that practices can vary by model. Its trust-center page, which says it was last updated in August 2026, lists map data, device status, and anonymized usage information among collected data. The page may not always reflect the latest updates, so check the documentation for the specific model and app version. Roborock’s US trust center

How to limit mapping and other data collection

1. Identify your exact device and account region

Find the model number and check the app version and account region. A help page for another model or country may describe different settings, data handling, or feature availability.

2. Review mapping controls and their trade-offs

In the iRobot app, the route published by iRobot Support is Accounts > Privacy > Mapping Features > select the robot > toggle Mapping Features. iRobot says turning this off stops spatial data from going to its cloud servers. It also disables mapping-dependent app features, including schedules and favorites, time estimates, directed-room cleaning, targeted-zone cleaning, and Keep Out Zones. Turning mapping back on requires creating a new map and customizing it. Menu labels may change, so consult the current instructions for your app version. iRobot Support’s mapping instructions

3. Treat obstacle images as a separate setting

Map transmission and camera or obstacle-image review are not the same control. On eligible iRobot devices, the published route is Account > Privacy > Map Features > choose robot > Obstacle Image Review. iRobot says turning off image review does not disable obstacle avoidance, but it prevents feedback that could affect future behavior. Its support page says encrypted images that have not been contributed to the image database are automatically deleted from its servers after 30 days; it says the images can be viewed in the app by the user or someone else with account access, and that iRobot cannot view or access them unless they are contributed. This 30-day statement applies to un-contributed obstacle images, not maps or all robot data. iRobot’s obstacle-image guidance

4. Disconnect wireless access only if the consequences suit you

Where the device supports it, disconnecting Wi-Fi or Bluetooth can limit connected operation. Depending on the model, it may also remove remote control, app synchronization, updates, mapping functions, or other connected features. iRobot’s policy describes disconnection controls for its devices; check your own model’s instructions before relying on disconnection as a privacy measure. iRobot’s US privacy policy

5. Review account deletion and third-party access

If you sell, give away, or retire the vacuum, use the manufacturer’s current instructions to remove it from your account and request deletion where available. Deletion may be subject to exceptions, and it does not necessarily mean every backup disappears immediately. Roborock’s US privacy policy says data may be retained for the purposes for which it was collected or as permitted by law; deletion may not immediately remove information from backups, which it says will be isolated from further processing until cleared or anonymized. The same policy describes global cloud services and data centers in China, Germany, and the United States; it gives EEA website use with processing on German servers as an example, but does not establish the server location for every user or device. If you connect a third-party app, review that developer’s privacy documentation as well as the vacuum maker’s. iRobot’s UK security guidance specifically recommends checking third-party developers’ data-handling documents. iRobot’s UK security guidance

What to compare before choosing a robot vacuum

Manufacturer statements are not an independent, controlled comparison and do not support a privacy ranking of brands. For a particular model, check these points in its current policy, manual, and app:

  • How it creates maps and whether map data depends on a cloud service.
  • Whether map transmission can be disabled and which functions are lost when it is.
  • Whether the model has a camera, image review, video, or photo features, and what enables sharing or storage.
  • Which cloud regions the manufacturer names, while avoiding assumptions about the location used for an individual device.
  • How account deletion works and what the policy says about backups and retention.
  • Which third-party apps can access the device or its data.
