You can add practical layers to an apartment’s security without making permanent changes: first check and report faulty existing locks, then consider removable devices that fit your exact door or window and still let everyone exit quickly. No portable lock or alarm replaces working installed hardware, and lease terms, local law, and building safety rules determine what you may use.
Start with the locks and latches already installed
Inspect the main entry door, deadbolt and latch, the strike area, accessible windows, and any patio or sliding door. Check that each installed device operates normally and that doors and windows close properly. Photograph defects and report missing or inoperable hardware to the landlord or property manager. Ask what repairs and removable additions are allowed before attaching or wedging anything in place.

Use the locks provided whenever you are home or away, as appropriate for the lock and safe exit. If required hardware is broken or absent, seek repair through the responsible party and check local tenant guidance rather than assuming a portable product is an adequate substitute.
Requirements depend on where you live
For example, Texas Property Code Chapter 92 covers residential-tenancy security devices including window latches, exterior-door locks, sliding-door security bars, keyless bolts, and viewers. Section 92.153 sets out devices required in covered dwellings, subject to exceptions, and the chapter addresses landlord-paid installation and repair or replacement. Those provisions are Texas-specific; they do not establish what a landlord must provide elsewhere. Read the Texas Property Code, Chapter 92.

In England, government guidance in Approved Document Q concerns reasonable provision against unauthorized access in new dwellings and parts of buildings that provide access to flats. It is building-regulation guidance, not a general statement of renter rights, and it does not establish rules for other UK nations or countries. See the UK government’s Approved Document Q page.
Check permission and safe exit before adding anything
Review your lease and building rules, and ask the manager if a device touches building hardware, a door frame, a window track, or a shared entrance. A product advertised as removable can still leave marks or conflict with building rules. Avoid drilling or modifying shared hardware without permission, and do not use a device that could trap an occupant or obstruct an emergency exit. If you are unsure whether a device is compatible with your building’s fire-safety arrangements, ask building management or consult local fire-safety guidance.

Choose a removable physical device that matches the opening
Portable interior locks and door or security bars can provide an additional physical layer while occupants are inside, if the product fits the specific door and is used as intended. They engage or brace different parts of an opening, so check the product’s compatibility instructions rather than assuming all doors, handles, frames, or opening directions are alike. Practice fitting and releasing it, and confirm that it does not prevent a quick exit.

- Door or security bar: Check where it braces and whether the door and floor or frame allow stable, correct placement. Confirm that it can be removed immediately when you need to leave.
- Sliding-door track bar: Measure and inspect the actual track and opening direction. A bar that does not fit the track or obstructs normal use is not a suitable choice.
- Window bar: Verify compatibility with the particular window and follow the installation and use instructions. Keep the window usable for any required exit or emergency access.
ABUS describes its FPR217 as a square-profile window security bar that can be installed without drilling into the window frame and says it suits almost all common window types. Those are the manufacturer’s product claims, not independent validation that it fits every apartment window or has a particular forced-entry performance. Check your window and the manufacturer’s instructions before relying on it. View ABUS’s FPR217 product information.

Use alarms for awareness, not as a lock
A door-stop alarm or removable contact alarm may alert an occupant when a door or window is opened, depending on the device and setup. An alarm signals; it does not reinforce a latch, secure a frame, or physically lock the door. Treat it as an optional awareness layer, not a replacement for functioning locks. A renter-focused guide also identifies portable locks and door bars as no-drill options and cautions against lease conflicts, changes to building hardware, and blocked exits; this is editorial guidance, not a legal rule or independent product test. See the renter-focused door-security guide.
