RLCraft Server Requirements: How Much RAM You Need for Classic RLCraft and Dregora

Classic RLCraft 2.9.3 recommends 3–4GB of Java heap. RLCraft Dregora v1.1.2b recommends 6–8GB, with 8GB for servers. Learn how host RAM, Forge compatibility and server settings affect the result.
Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Classic RLCraft 2.9.3 needs 3–4GB of JVM RAM, while RLCraft Dregora v1.1.2b needs 6–8GB, with 8GB currently recommended for a Dregora server. Those figures are allocations to Java’s heap, not the total memory of the computer. Reserve additional physical RAM for the operating system, Java overhead, file cache and any other services running on the host.

The two packs have different official requirements, so the right answer depends first on which server pack and version you are deploying. Neither project publishes an authoritative RAM-per-player formula; concurrent players, loaded chunks and other server activity still affect how much headroom you need.

Quick RAM guide by RLCraft version

Pack Version and Minecraft base Official JVM allocation guidance Important qualification
Classic RLCraft v2.9.3, Minecraft 1.12.2 3–4GB The project says the default 1GB allocation is not enough.
RLCraft Dregora v1.1.2b, Minecraft 1.12.2 6–8GB; 8GB recommended for servers The project warns that going higher or lower may cause performance issues.

These are pack-level recommendations from the respective project pages, not guarantees for a particular number of players. Treat them as the starting heap size for a correctly matched installation, then keep physical memory in reserve rather than assigning every available gigabyte to Java.

Which RLCraft are you running?

Classic RLCraft 2.9.3

The classic project lists release v2.9.3 for Minecraft 1.12.2. Its server pack was released on June 27, 2023. The project’s own guidance is explicit: “The default 1GB of RAM that is allocated is NOT enough” and it recommends allocating 3 to 4GB. If you are following an older tutorial that leaves the default heap at 1GB, change that before troubleshooting lag.

Classic RLCraft v2.9 also specifies Forge 2860 (Forge 1.12.2 version 14.23.5.2860) or newer. A mismatched Forge build can produce startup errors or unexplained behavior even when the host has adequate RAM.

RLCraft Dregora v1.1.2b

Dregora is a separate, newer RLCraft-derived pack, not an alternative name for classic RLCraft. Its project page lists v1.1.2b for Minecraft 1.12.2, with a server pack dated December 2, 2025. The published instruction is to allocate 6–8GB of RAM, with 8GB currently recommended for servers for best performance. The same instruction cautions that allocating higher or lower than that range may cause performance issues.

Do not apply the classic 3–4GB number to Dregora. Conversely, assigning 8GB to a small classic installation is not automatically beneficial; Java heap size must fit the pack and the host’s available memory.

Allocated RAM versus total host RAM

When a control panel asks for “RAM,” it may be referring to the Java heap (`-Xmx`) rather than the machine’s total physical memory. The heap is where Minecraft objects are stored. The operating system, Java runtime, native libraries, filesystem cache, monitoring tools and other applications use memory outside that heap.

For classic RLCraft, a 3–4GB heap therefore requires a machine with more than 4GB of usable physical memory. For Dregora, an 8GB heap requires still more headroom. If you assign nearly all physical RAM to Java, the operating system can begin swapping or terminate processes, producing pauses that look like a Minecraft performance problem.

  • Simple design to perfectly protect the cooling module with high thermal conductive adhesive
  • Supports Intel & AMD motherboards
  • Selected high-quality IC
  • Supports XMP2.0
  • Energy saving with ultra-low working voltage
  • Check the host’s total installed and usable memory, not just the amount shown in a hosting plan’s marketing label.
  • Subtract memory needed by the operating system and any database, web panel, backup job, voice server or other service on the same machine.
  • Set the Java maximum only after that reservation. The number in `-Xmx` is an upper limit, not a promise that Minecraft will remain healthy on a host with no spare memory.
  • Watch for swapping, out-of-memory kills and long garbage-collection pauses after changing the allocation.

Is 4GB enough for an RLCraft server?

For classic RLCraft 2.9.3, 4GB is the upper end of the project’s 3–4GB recommendation and is the sensible target when the host can provide operating-system headroom. It is not a universal guarantee: the project does not publish a player-count multiplier, and loaded chunks and activity can change the demand.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

For Dregora v1.1.2b, 4GB is below the project’s stated 6–8GB range. Choosing it means ignoring the current official guidance and may lead to performance problems. Use the Dregora range unless the project publishes a revised requirement for your version.

Can an 8GB machine run RLCraft?

An “8GB machine” and an “8GB Java allocation” are different situations. An 8GB physical host cannot safely dedicate all 8GB to Java because the operating system and other processes still need memory. That makes an 8GB total machine a poor fit for an 8GB Dregora heap, even though 8GB is the project’s recommended Dregora server allocation.

The practical question is how much memory remains after the operating-system reservation. If the remaining amount is less than the pack’s recommendation, reduce other workloads or move the server to a host with more physical RAM. Do not solve memory pressure by repeatedly increasing `-Xmx`; that can make the host less stable.

Choose the correct server files before changing RAM

Use the server pack, not the client pack

Dregora’s installation instructions specifically say to download and use the Server Pack, not the Client pack, and to read the included file named “SERVER README OR DIE.txt.” The client files are intended for a player’s installation and are not a substitute for the server distribution. Starting with the wrong archive can leave you with missing libraries, an incomplete launch setup or a world that does not match the clients.

Match every version

  1. Confirm the exact modpack name and version your players will install.
  2. Download the server pack for that same version.
  3. Use the Minecraft and Forge versions specified by the project. For classic RLCraft v2.9, that means Minecraft 1.12.2 with Forge 14.23.5.2860 or newer.
  4. Complete the server pack’s readme instructions before changing performance settings.
  5. Have a client join a test world before opening the server to a larger group.

Version matching matters as much as the nominal RAM number. A server with the correct heap but the wrong Forge build or pack can fail in ways that extra memory will not repair.

Classic RLCraft settings that affect world generation

For classic RLCraft, set `enable-command-block=true` in `server.properties`. The project warns that leaving command blocks disabled can prevent certain structures from generating correctly and can result in missing villagers. This is a world-generation requirement, not a RAM tweak, but it is an easy setup detail to miss when creating a fresh server.

  1. Stop the server completely before editing configuration files.
  2. Open the server directory’s `server.properties` file.
  3. Find the `enable-command-block` entry and set it to `true`.
  4. Save the file and start the server again.
  5. Verify generation in a test world before relying on an existing save.

If a world was created with the wrong setting, changing the property later does not necessarily restore structures that were already skipped. Test before committing to a long-running world.

How to set the Java heap

The allocation is controlled by the launch script or hosting panel’s Java arguments. Look for the maximum-heap option, written as `-Xmx` followed by a size such as `-Xmx2G`. Replace that maximum with the value appropriate for your pack and available host memory.

  • Classic RLCraft: use `-Xmx3G` to `-Xmx4G`, staying within the project’s 3–4GB recommendation.
  • Dregora v1.1.2b: use an allocation in the published 6–8GB range, with 8GB the stated server target.

Change the maximum while the server is stopped, start it, and inspect the startup log or panel display to confirm that the new argument was accepted. If the process immediately exits, check for a typo in the launch arguments, an unavailable Java installation or insufficient physical memory before changing the heap again.

What about the RLCraft wiki’s 4GB advice?

The RLCraft wiki’s manual-installation page recommends changing the JVM maximum from `-Xmx2G` to `-Xmx4G` and warns that going above 4GB can cause Java memory-leak issues. That page was last updated for v2.8.2, earlier than classic v2.9.3 and Dregora v1.1.2b. It is useful supplementary guidance for understanding the launch setting, but it should not override the newer pack-specific instructions.

For classic v2.9.3, the current project page’s 3–4GB recommendation is the more relevant reference. For Dregora, the newer project page explicitly calls for 6–8GB and an 8GB server target, so the older “do not exceed 4GB” warning should not be treated as a Dregora requirement.

Why player count is not a simple RAM formula

There is no official statement in the project guidance that assigns a fixed number of gigabytes per player. A claim such as “1GB per player” would therefore be an unofficial rule, not a supported requirement. Two servers with the same player count can have different memory demand because their players may be spread across many dimensions and chunks, generating terrain and entities at different rates.

Use the published pack allocation as a baseline, then evaluate your actual workload:

  • How many players are connected at the same time?
  • Are they exploring in different directions and loading new chunks?
  • Are multiple dimensions, farms or entity-heavy areas active?
  • Does the machine run only Minecraft, or does it host other services?
  • Does the server remain responsive during exploration, backups and restarts?

When the heap is consistently near its limit and the host still has spare physical memory, a measured increase may help. When the host is swapping or the Java process is being killed, adding heap without adding physical memory makes the underlying problem worse.

Troubleshooting by symptom

The server will not start after changing RAM

  • Confirm that the launch script actually contains the new `-Xmx` value and that there is no conflicting second Java argument.
  • Check that the host has enough free physical memory for the requested heap plus the operating system.
  • Verify the Java and Forge installation required by the server pack.
  • Undo the last change and read the first clear error in the startup log rather than relying on the final shutdown line.

Players see lag despite adequate allocation

  • Check whether the server is using the correct pack and Forge version.
  • Look for swapping or operating-system memory pressure.
  • Test whether lag appears when players generate new terrain or travel between dimensions; that points to workload and world generation rather than a simple heap shortage.
  • Confirm that command blocks are enabled for classic RLCraft so required structures generate correctly.

The world is missing structures or villagers

On classic RLCraft, verify `enable-command-block=true` and test with a correctly configured world. This symptom is specifically called out by the project as a consequence of disabling command blocks; increasing RAM alone will not recreate content that failed to generate.

A practical decision checklist

  1. Identify the pack: classic RLCraft 2.9.3 or Dregora v1.1.2b.
  2. Download the matching server pack, not a client archive.
  3. Match Minecraft and Forge versions; classic v2.9 requires Forge 14.23.5.2860 or newer.
  4. Reserve physical memory for the operating system and every other service on the host.
  5. Set the heap to 3–4GB for classic or 6–8GB for Dregora, targeting 8GB for a Dregora server.
  6. Enable command blocks for classic RLCraft and verify the setting in a test world.
  7. Monitor startup, memory pressure and real gameplay before adding more players.

The project pages report more than 30.3 million total RLCraft downloads as of their CurseForge listing accessed in 2026, but popularity does not translate into a universal capacity formula. Size the machine for the exact pack, workload and services you will run.
