What each Minecraft book item does
Minecraft uses several similarly named items for different purposes. A normal Book is a crafting ingredient. A Book and Quill is editable text. After you sign it, it becomes a Written Book that can be kept as a permanent record or displayed in a lectern. An Enchanted Book carries an enchantment until you transfer it to compatible equipment with an anvil. A regular Bookshelf supports an enchanting table, while a Chiseled Bookshelf stores books and participates in redstone contraptions.

How to make a normal book
A normal book is a shapeless recipe requiring three paper and one leather. Put the ingredients anywhere in a crafting grid; their positions do not matter.
Gather the ingredients
- Paper: harvest sugar cane and turn three pieces of cane into three paper.
- Leather: obtain it from suitable animals such as cows, or from other legitimate in-game sources available in your edition and version.
Craft it
- Open your inventory crafting grid or a crafting table.
- Place three paper and one leather in the grid.
- Move the resulting book into your inventory.
Books are not an endpoint. They are consumed in the recipes for Books and Quills and regular bookshelves, and they are the book input when you use an enchanting table to create an enchanted book.

How to make and use a Book and Quill
A Book and Quill is the writable version of a book. Combine one book, one feather, and one ink sac in any arrangement in the crafting grid.
Write and save information
- Hold the Book and Quill and use it to open the writing interface.
- Enter your text on its pages. Use it for coordinates, server rules, build measurements, role-playing journals, quest instructions, or a project log.
- Choose Sign when the text is complete, enter an author name if the interface requests one, and confirm.
Signing changes the editable Book and Quill into a Written Book. The signed copy is intended to be persistent: other players can read it, but they cannot continue editing that copy. If you expect to revise a document, keep an unsigned copy or write a new Book and Quill before signing.
Display a book in a lectern
A lectern holds one Written Book or one Book and Quill. Place the lectern, then use the book on it. This makes a practical information point in a multiplayer base, library, map room, museum, or instruction area. A lectern is also the workstation associated with librarian villagers, so it can serve both as a display block and as part of a villager trading setup.
Mojang describes the behavior plainly: “Lecterns, when placed into the world, will hold a single written book or book and quill.” In practice, that means a lectern is a display point rather than bulk storage. Use several lecterns when you want a library of separate titles, and keep a spare unsigned copy if a document may need editing later.
How enchanted books work
An enchanted book is a way to store an enchantment until you have the right item to use it on. It does not apply its power merely by sitting in your inventory. The normal transfer method is an anvil.
Apply an enchanted book with an anvil
- Place an anvil and open its interface.
- Put the equipment you want to improve in the first slot.
- Put the compatible enchanted book in the second slot.
- Review the output and the experience-level cost.
- Take the result from the output slot.
Microsoft’s guidance describes the anvil route as combining an item with an enchanted book, or combining compatible identical items with different enchantments. The equipment and book must be compatible. A book carrying a tool-only enchantment will not apply to armor, and an enchantment that conflicts with one already on the item may be rejected. Anvils also track prior work, so repeatedly combining or repairing the same item can make later operations more expensive.

Think of an enchanted book as an inventory-ready upgrade. You can keep it in a chest while gathering diamonds, netherite, or a replacement tool, then spend levels only when the target item is ready. This is especially useful when a villager offer or an enchanting-table result appears before you have the equipment to use it.
Make an enchanted book at an enchanting table
An enchanting table can enchant an eligible item or a normal book. The player supplies the item or book, lapis lazuli, and experience levels. The three choices shown by the table are offers, not a promise that every possible enchantment will appear. Enchanting a book is useful when you want to hold the result for later, rather than spend an enchantment immediately on equipment.

Using a book in the table therefore has a different purpose from enchanting a finished tool. It creates a portable result, but it still consumes the same kinds of table resources: lapis and experience. Keep ordinary books available if you want to roll for books, and reserve your best equipment for an offer you are prepared to accept.
Use a librarian villager as an alternative
Librarian villagers can offer enchanted books in exchange for emeralds. This route avoids spending lapis on every desired enchantment, but the available offers depend on the villager’s trade data, edition, and game version. If a particular trade matters to your plan, verify it in the version you are playing rather than assuming Java and Bedrock behave identically.

Regular bookshelves and enchanting tables
Regular bookshelves are the blocks that increase an enchanting table’s available power. The familiar maximum setup uses 15 regular bookshelves arranged around the table with the required air gap; adding more does not increase the table beyond its top level. Keep the arrangement clear so the game can detect the shelves. A block, torch, carpet, or other obstruction in the wrong place can prevent a shelf from contributing.
Craft a bookshelf
A bookshelf recipe uses six wooden planks and three books: planks fill the top and bottom rows, and books fill the middle row. Any matching plank type can be used for the recipe, subject to the recipe rules of your edition and version.
Because every bookshelf consumes three books, an enchanting room can require a substantial paper-and-leather gathering session. Make a small sugar-cane supply early, collect leather while exploring, and decide how many books you want to reserve for writing before converting the rest into shelves.

Find bookshelves instead of crafting them
Bookshelves can appear in village libraries, woodland mansions, and stronghold libraries. Breaking a bookshelf without Silk Touch yields three books, not the original block, so plan ahead if you want to relocate intact shelves. With Silk Touch, you can harvest and place the bookshelf itself.
This creates two practical options. If you need books for more crafting, breaking found shelves without Silk Touch recovers three books per block. If you are furnishing an enchanting room and want to preserve the block, bring a Silk Touch tool. Loot generation and villager behavior can vary by edition and release, so treat structures and offers as version-sensitive rather than guaranteed quantities.

Chiseled bookshelves: storage, not enchanting power
A chiseled bookshelf is a separate block with a different job. It does not increase an enchanting table’s power like a regular bookshelf does. Use it when you want organized book storage, a hidden library mechanism, or a redstone-controlled selector.
Recipe and capacity
Craft it from six wooden planks and three slabs. The planks form the sides and back in the recipe, with the slabs across the middle. Each chiseled bookshelf has six book slots. A shelf can hold up to six books at once, allowing you to group manuals, maps in written books, enchanted books, or role-playing material without filling a chest.

You can leave gaps, reserve one position for a frequently used title, or arrange books in a deliberate order for a puzzle. That makes the block useful as both furniture and an interface: the visual shelf tells players where information belongs, while the slot state can drive a mechanism.
Insert and remove books
Use a book item on an empty slot to insert it. To remove a book manually, use an empty hand on the occupied slot. Slot position matters: the block remembers the individual slot rather than treating all six books as one stack.
Automate it with redstone
Chiseled bookshelves can interact with hoppers, droppers, and hopper minecarts, which lets you feed or extract books in an automated build. A redstone comparator can read the shelf’s state and indicate the last slot interacted with. This supports mechanisms such as a six-option selector, a puzzle lock, a lectern-style archive, or a redstone door triggered by a particular book position. Design the hopper direction and comparator placement in a test area first, because the result depends on the slot that was most recently changed.
For a reliable build, label the six positions before wiring the circuit. Insert one test book, observe the comparator output, remove it with an empty hand, and repeat for each slot. Then connect the hopper or dropper only after you know which interaction produces the signal your machine expects. This avoids a common mistake: assuming a comparator reads a generic fullness level when the useful signal is tied to the last slot changed.
The block can also be burned in a furnace to smelt 1.5 items. That is generally a disposal option rather than an efficient fuel strategy, especially when the shelf contains books you could reuse.

The blocks may look related, but substituting one for the other wastes materials and space. Build the enchanting perimeter with regular bookshelves, then add chiseled shelves where you need accessible storage or circuitry. A decorative wall can combine both types as long as the shelves immediately supporting the table are regular ones.

A practical survival progression
If you are starting from a new world, collect the materials in this order so each step unlocks the next.
- Secure sugar cane. Plant it beside water so paper production continues while you explore.
- Collect leather and a feather. Leather makes the initial books; a feather is needed for each Book and Quill.
- Gather ink sacs. You need one for each Book and Quill.
- Craft ordinary books. Reserve some for writing and some for bookshelves.
- Choose your goal. Make a Book and Quill for notes, or craft regular bookshelves if the priority is enchanting.
- Build the enchanting setup. Use a regular enchanting table and up to 15 correctly placed regular bookshelves.
- Collect lapis and experience. These are the resources consumed by enchanting-table operations.
- Use an anvil for final application. Keep enchanted books until you have compatible equipment and enough experience for the transfer.
- Add lecterns or chiseled bookshelves later. Use lecterns for public documents and librarian workstations; use chiseled shelves for compact storage and automation.
For a multiplayer base, make the writing branch early: one book, feather, and ink sac produces a Book and Quill that can become a signed rulebook or map-room guide. For a solo enchanting project, prioritize paper, leather, and the three-books-per-shelf requirement. These paths share the same basic book supply, so labeling storage prevents the books intended for writing from disappearing into a bookshelf recipe.

“My enchanting table is not offering high levels.”
- Count only regular bookshelves; chiseled bookshelves do not provide enchanting power.
- Check that the shelves are at the correct distance and that the space between them and the table is unobstructed.
- Confirm that you have enough experience levels and lapis lazuli for the offer you selected.
“I cannot edit my book anymore.”
You probably signed it. A signed Written Book is the persistent version and is not edited like a Book and Quill. Start with a fresh Book and Quill when you need another draft.
“The anvil will not apply my enchanted book.”
- Check that the enchantment is valid for the target item.
- Look for a conflict with an enchantment already on the item.
- Make sure you have enough experience levels and that the anvil is not too damaged to use.
“My villager is not offering the book I want.”
Trade inventories are sensitive to villager state, edition, and version. Ensure the intended villager can access its lectern, then check the current offer rules for your edition. Do not assume a Java trade pattern is identical to Bedrock.
“My chiseled bookshelf automation triggers the wrong output.”
Comparators respond to the shelf’s last interacted slot. Empty or fill the intended slot deliberately, verify hopper and dropper directions, and test the circuit after every change.
“I broke my bookshelf and got books instead of the block.”
That is the normal result without Silk Touch: a regular bookshelf drops three books. Recover those books for another recipe, or use a Silk Touch tool when relocating intact shelves matters.
Edition and version checks
Core recipes are stable, but several surrounding mechanics can change between Java and Bedrock or between releases. Check the interface wording and current rules in the edition you actually play before committing a large build. Villager enchanted-book offers are particularly sensitive to version and trade settings. Structure generation, loot details, and the behavior of experimental features should also be confirmed in your world.
The safest planning habit is to test one copy before mass production. Craft one Book and Quill, place one book in a lectern, try one enchanted-book transfer on a disposable item, and wire one chiseled bookshelf to a comparator. Once those interactions match your expectations, scale up the library, enchanting room, or storage array.

Which book setup should you build?
- For notes or multiplayer instructions: make a Book and Quill, sign the finished copy, and place it in a lectern.
- For maximum enchanting choices: build a regular bookshelf ring around the enchanting table, using up to 15 shelves.
- For a portable enchantment plan: create or obtain enchanted books, then store them until an anvil can apply them to compatible equipment.
- For a compact archive or redstone machine: craft chiseled bookshelves and use their six slots with hoppers, droppers, hopper minecarts, and comparators.
The distinction prevents the most expensive mistake: building an attractive chiseled-bookcase wall and expecting it to power an enchanting table. Use regular bookshelves for enchanting strength, chiseled bookshelves for storage and automation, and written books plus lecterns when the information itself needs to remain visible and shareable.
