What a Minecraft server migration actually moves
A world folder alone is not a complete migration. The server directory also contains the configuration and identity data that makes the world behave as players expect. A safe archive normally includes the following:

| Every world directory | Preserves the overworld and, for Java servers, the Nether and End dimension data stored with the world. |
server.properties |
Retains the configured world name, port, difficulty, game mode, online-mode, view distance, and other server behavior. |
| Plugins, mods, and their configurations | Restores custom mechanics, permissions, commands, protection, maps, and integrations. Copy the configuration directories as well as the plugin or mod files. |
| Datapacks and resource packs | Prevents a world from opening with missing custom content or altered gameplay. |
| Allow-list or whitelist, permissions, operators, and ban lists | Preserves who can join and which users have administrative rights. |
| Startup scripts and scheduled-task settings | Reproduces the launch command, memory flags, automatic restarts, backups, and maintenance jobs. |
| Proxy, voice-chat, map, and related service configuration | Maintains companion services that are part of the server, not just the world. |
Astroworld’s documented migration workflow likewise calls for worlds, plugins or mods, configurations, and server.properties, and describes making a backup before replacing the old server. The safest practical rule is to archive the entire server directory after shutdown, then remove nothing from the archive unless you know exactly why it is safe.
Plan the move before stopping players
Record the old server’s identity
Write down whether the server is Java Edition or Bedrock Dedicated Server, the exact Minecraft version, the server implementation, the Java runtime required by that implementation, the configured port, and whether online-mode and an allow-list are enabled. Record the current world name and the versions of every plugin, mod, datapack, behavior pack, and resource pack.

Take screenshots or notes of the working startup command and any host-level settings such as firewall rules, scheduled tasks, proxy routes, or automatic restart policies. These details are easy to overlook when the files are copied but the new machine is configured separately.
Choose a transfer method
Use the method that gives you a verifiable copy and a way to recover if the transfer is interrupted:
- Host file manager: Convenient for a managed service that can upload and extract an archive in place.
- SFTP: Appropriate when you have shell or file-transfer access and want resumable, directory-level control.
- Host migration tool: Can reduce manual extraction work, but check what it imports and whether it creates a pre-migration backup.
- Cloud storage: Useful for a large archive when direct host-to-host transfer is slow. Microsoft’s Bedrock guidance specifically recommends compressing the world folder and using a service such as OneDrive to move it between machines.
- Local removable storage: Practical for a very large archive when both machines are accessible, provided you retain a second copy.
Do not overwrite the only copy while testing. Keep one archive unchanged and, if possible, store it on a different device or service from both hosts.
Step 1: Stop the old server and create a complete backup
- Announce a maintenance window and ask players to disconnect. Do not copy a live world while it is still writing chunks, player data, or region files.
- Use the server’s normal stop command or control-panel stop action. Wait for the console to confirm a clean shutdown; closing the terminal or killing the process can leave an incomplete world.
- After the process has stopped, copy the entire server directory to a temporary backup location.
- Compress the copy into an archive such as ZIP or another format supported by both hosts. Include hidden files and nested configuration directories.
- Verify that the archive can be opened and that it contains the expected world folder,
server.properties, plugin or mod directories, allow-list data, and startup files. - Label the archive with the server edition, Minecraft version, and backup date. Make it read-only or otherwise immutable while you perform the migration.
A clean shutdown is the boundary between a recoverable snapshot and a potentially inconsistent copy. If the old server has an automatic backup feature, keep that backup as an additional rollback point rather than treating it as a substitute for the full directory archive.
Java Edition: move a dedicated server
Install a compatible foundation first
On the new host, install the same server implementation and Minecraft version before restoring data. A deliberate upgrade is possible, but it should be treated as a version change with its own backup and compatibility checks, not as an incidental part of the move. Install the Java runtime required by that server implementation and verify that the startup command can launch it.

If the new host creates a fresh server directory, start it once and stop it. This can create the expected directory structure and expose missing runtime or permission problems before you introduce the real world.
Recommended Free Tools
Upload and extract the archive
- Upload the zipped backup through the host’s file manager, SFTP, or migration tool.
- Extract it into a staging directory or the server directory, depending on the host’s instructions. Check for an extra nested folder: extracting
backup.zipmay producebackup/server/...when the server expects the files directly under its working directory. - Confirm that the world folder is in the location expected by the server and that the launch script points to the restored files.
- Restore
server.properties, plugins or mods, configuration folders, datapacks, resource packs, whitelist data, permissions, operator data, and ban lists.
Minecraft Help’s Java transfer guidance summarizes the core operation as copying the zipped backup to the new computer, unzipping it, and placing the unzipped world in the location used by the Java installation. For a dedicated server, that location is the server’s configured world directory rather than necessarily a desktop client’s single-player saves directory.
Check Java settings before the first real start
- Make sure the configured world name points to the restored folder. A mismatch can make the server generate a new world instead of opening the copied one.
- Compare the Minecraft and server-implementation versions with the old host. Confirm that every plugin or mod supports the selected version.
- Review the port, online-mode, difficulty, game mode, max-player setting, view distance, and allow-list state.
- Check file ownership and permissions if the host runs the server under a dedicated user account.
- Use the same startup options initially. Change memory or performance flags only after the migration is proven.
Start the server and watch the console. Stop immediately if it reports that the world cannot be found, a plugin or mod is missing, a datapack failed to load, or authentication settings differ from the old server. Correct the cause before allowing players to connect.
Bedrock Dedicated Server: restore the world and packs
Let the new installation create its folders
Install the intended Bedrock Dedicated Server version on the new host, start it once, and stop it. The first run creates the folders and baseline configuration that the server expects. Do not leave the freshly generated world in place while copying the production world over it.
Copy the world into worlds/
- Compress the existing Bedrock world folder after stopping the old server.
- Upload and extract it into the new server’s
worlds/directory. - Use a simple folder name without special characters.
- Open
server.propertiesand setlevel-nameto exactly the restored folder name, including capitalization where the host’s file system distinguishes it. - Restore
allowlist.json, permissions, resource packs, behavior packs, and the remaining server properties.
Microsoft’s Bedrock Dedicated Server documentation states that when the server runs on a different machine, the world must be copied to the machine running Dedicated Server. Its documented approach is to compress the folder, transfer it, extract it under worlds/, and match level-name to that folder.

Verify Bedrock-specific settings
- Check the configured server port and online-mode.
- Confirm max players, view distance, tick distance, and allow-list settings.
- Open
allowlist.jsonand verify the permitted players. Microsoft identifies this file as the store for allowed players; direct edits require an allow-list reload before the change takes effect. - Confirm that every behavior pack and resource pack referenced by the world is present and enabled.
Start the server and connect from a Bedrock client on the network your players will use. A successful process start alone is not proof that the correct world loaded: inspect the spawn area and player data in-game.
Validate the restored server before cutover
Use an operator account for the first connection, but also test with an ordinary player account. The following checks catch most incomplete restores:
| Check | What to verify | Failure clue |
|---|---|---|
| World identity | Expected spawn, terrain, builds, seed-related behavior, and player locations appear. | A newly generated landscape or default spawn means the configured world name or path is wrong. |
| Player data | Inventories, ender chests, advancements or achievements, and statistics are present. | Missing player data usually indicates the wrong world folder or an incomplete archive. |
| Dimensions and travel | Nether and End portals work and the corresponding dimensions load. | Portal errors or empty dimensions can indicate missing world subdirectories or incompatible software. |
| Gameplay systems | Movement, redstone, farms, block interactions, commands, and scheduled mechanics behave normally. | Broken farms or commands often point to a missing datapack, plugin, mod, or changed configuration. |
| Permissions | Operators retain administrative commands and ordinary players have only intended permissions. | Unexpected access can result from omitted permission files or a plugin version mismatch. |
| Custom content | Plugins, mods, datapacks, behavior packs, and resource packs load without errors. | Console messages about missing files, failed dependencies, or incompatible versions require correction before cutover. |
| Connectivity | A real client can join through the address and port players will use. | Connection refusals, authentication errors, or timeouts point to firewall, port, DNS, or online-mode differences. |
Read the complete startup and join logs, not just the final “ server started” line. Save a copy of the new server’s log from the test so you can compare it with the old host if a plugin or pack behaves differently.
Cut over players with a rollback plan
- Leave the old server stopped but intact after the final backup.
- Give the new server a private test period or restrict access with the allow-list while you perform validation.
- When the checks pass, update the DNS record, proxy destination, or published server address, or send players the new address if no DNS name is used.
- Tell players when the cutover is complete and ask them to reconnect rather than relying on stale client entries.
- Monitor the new console, player joins, permissions, and world activity during the first session.
- Retain the old host and at least one immutable backup until the migration is accepted. If data is missing or corruption appears, stop the new server, preserve its current files for diagnosis, restore the archive to the old host or a clean instance, and return players to the old address.
Do not delete the old host immediately after the first successful login. A problem may only appear when a rarely used dimension, plugin command, or scheduled task runs.

The safest method is a short final outage: prepare the new installation and transfer a pre-staged archive, then stop the old server, create a fresh final archive, upload the changed files, and perform the validation. The exact time depends on archive size and transfer speed; there is no universal duration that can be promised from the file set alone.

Do not attempt a live copy merely to avoid downtime. Region files, player data, and plugin databases can change while the archive is being created. If the world is active, the resulting copy may contain a mixture of old and new state. A clean stop and a final archive are more important than shaving a few minutes from the maintenance window.

| Approach | Advantages | Responsibilities and risks |
|---|---|---|
| Host-assisted import | May handle upload, extraction, directory placement, and initial setup for you; support staff may help with the cutover. | Confirm exactly which worlds, plugins, mods, packs, and configuration files are included and whether a pre-import backup is created. |
| Self-managed host or VPS | Maximum control over files, runtime, startup flags, firewall, backups, and update timing. | You must install the runtime, configure networking and permissions, restore scheduled jobs, maintain backups, and troubleshoot logs yourself. |
| Direct archive transfer | Simple, reproducible, and easy to retain as a rollback artifact. | Large archives can take time to upload and may exceed a host’s file-manager limits; verify extraction and nested-folder layout. |
Compare providers on control over files, downtime during import, transfer limits, version compatibility, plugin and mod support, backup retention, SFTP or file-manager access, rollback options, and the quality of migration support. The cheapest transfer is not useful if you cannot retrieve the archive or restore it after a failed import.
Troubleshooting common migration failures
The new server creates a different world
Stop it immediately so it does not add new data to the wrong location. Check that the restored folder is directly under the expected server directory and that level-name or the Java world-name setting matches it exactly. Look for an extra directory created during extraction.
Players lose inventories or appear at the wrong location
Confirm that you restored the complete world and not only a dimension folder or a partial copy. Check that player-data files were included and that the server is opening the same world name. Preserve the original archive while you investigate.
Plugins or mods fail to load
Compare the implementation and Minecraft version with the old host, then compare each plugin or mod version and its configuration directory. Read the first error and its dependency message in the startup log. Do not let players continue on a partially loaded server if a plugin controls protection, economy, permissions, or world editing.

Bedrock packs are missing
Restore both the pack files and the world’s references to them. Confirm that behavior packs and resource packs are in the expected directories and that the server log does not report a missing UUID or dependency.
The server starts but nobody can connect
Test locally from the host when possible, then test from an external network. Confirm the configured port, firewall rule, proxy or DNS destination, and online-mode. A successful console start does not prove that the public address reaches the new machine.
The allow-list rejects expected players
Check that allowlist.json was copied and that player names or identifiers are correct for the edition. If you edit the file while the Bedrock server is running, reload the allow-list as Microsoft’s documentation requires; otherwise restart the server after making the change.

- Edition, implementation, Minecraft version, and required Java runtime recorded.
- Old server stopped cleanly and a complete archive created.
- Archive opened and verified; a second immutable copy retained.
- World folders, properties, startup scripts, plugins or mods, configs, packs, permissions, operators, allow-list, and bans included.
- New host initialized and archive uploaded and extracted without an extra nesting level.
- Configured world name or Bedrock
level-namematches the restored folder. - Port, online-mode, difficulty, game mode, max players, view distance, tick distance, and allow-list checked.
- Operator and ordinary-player connections tested from a real client.
- Spawn, builds, inventories, ender chests, dimensions, portals, redstone, farms, commands, and custom content verified.
- Console logs reviewed for missing files, authentication errors, and dependency failures.
- DNS or the published address changed only after validation.
- Old host and rollback archive retained until acceptance.
Sources for the platform-specific file rules
Microsoft’s Bedrock Dedicated Server documentation explains the cross-machine world copy, the worlds/ destination, the matching level-name, and the role of allowlist.json. Minecraft Help’s Java Edition transfer guidance describes copying a zipped backup, unzipping it, and placing the world in the Java saves location. Those instructions support the practical distinction in this guide: transfer the world, but also preserve the complete server configuration and custom-content files that make the world usable.
