Start with this five-minute triage
Do these checks before changing individual mods. They separate a runtime problem from a pack, performance or networking problem.
- Stop the server completely and copy the entire server folder, including the world, configuration files and logs.
- Open a terminal or command prompt and run
java -version. For RLCraft 2.9.3, the reported runtime must be Java 8. A result beginning with 17 or 21 is a likely cause of a boot failure. - Confirm that the server uses Forge 14.23.5.2860 and that the pack is release 2.9.3, not an older 2.9.x or 2.8.x installation.
- Read the newest crash report or server log. Record the first error, the named mod and the point at which the loading process stops; the last line is often only a consequence.
- If the server reaches a ready state but a player is rejected, test locally first, then check the whitelist, firewall and port 25565 from outside the host.

Use the exact RLCraft 2.9.3 compatibility set
RLCraft is not a generic collection of individually interchangeable mods. Release 2.9.3 targets Minecraft 1.12.2 and was built around Forge 14.23.5.2860. The Technic listing for the 2.9 line identifies Forge 2860 as required. A server or client that uses a different loader, Minecraft version or pack release can fail before a world is loaded or be refused during login.

Do not “repair” a broken server by copying only the mods folder from another release. Pack-specific configuration, scripts and libraries can be just as important. If you are unsure what changed, obtain a clean 2.9.3 server installation, compare its folders with your backup and reapply only your world and deliberately chosen settings.
Fix the Java 8 startup failure
Recognize the symptom
The most recognizable report is AppClassLoader cannot be cast to class java.net.URLClassLoader. Hosting troubleshooting guides associate this with running the 1.12.2 pack on a Java runtime newer than Java 8. The server may close immediately, print a stack trace and never create a usable world.
Check which Java the server actually uses
Running java -version in your own shell is not enough if a control panel, batch file or service starts the server with a different executable. Check the launch script or panel’s selected runtime as well. On Windows, the script may contain a full path such as C:Program FilesJava...binjava.exe; on Linux, a service unit or panel can specify its own path. The path must resolve to Java 8 when the server process starts.
Switch the runtime without uninstalling newer Java
- Install a Java 8 runtime appropriate for your operating system if one is not already present.
- In the hosting panel, select Java 8 for this server. If you launch locally, edit the start script so its executable is the Java 8 binary rather than the system-default
java. - Run the script once and verify the startup log identifies Java 8 before proceeding.
- Keep Java 17 or 21 installed for other applications if needed; RLCraft only needs the server process redirected to Java 8.
One 2020 Forge forum report claimed that one Java 8 build worked while a later Java 8 build did not. That is a low-confidence, anecdotal lead, not a general requirement to hunt for an old patch version. First use a normal, supported Java 8 installation; investigate the exact update only if the log still points to the runtime after all other compatibility checks.

Restore a clean mod set and find conflicts
Adding or updating a single mod can break an otherwise working RLCraft server. “Unrelated” mods can still collide through registries, mixins, dependencies, network channels or configuration files. A crash report that names a mod, class or registry entry is more useful than repeatedly restarting the same edited installation.
Return to the last known-good state
- Stop the server and preserve the crash report and latest log.
- Remove the mods, libraries or configuration files added immediately before the failure, or restore the backed-up folders.
- Start the untouched pack. Do not test a new mod and a Java change simultaneously; changing two variables hides the cause.
- Once the clean pack starts, make one change at a time and keep a dated copy of the working folder.
Bisect when you cannot identify the change
If several additions are involved, disable roughly half of the added or recently updated mods and restart. If the crash remains, the conflicting item is in the enabled half; if it disappears, it is in the disabled half. Repeat the split until one mod or pair is isolated. Read the new log after every restart, because removing one mod can expose a second missing dependency.

A world created with a mod may contain blocks or entities that require it. Test changes on a copy of the world and keep the original backup untouched.
Handle OptiFine crashes on player clients
OptiFine is a client-side graphics modification, so an OptiFine crash does not necessarily mean the dedicated server is broken. A guide associated with the pack author recommends the latest OptiFine G5 build for Minecraft 1.12.2 rather than E3; the recommendation is reported with low confidence, and individual launcher environments can differ.

- Remove OptiFine from the affected client temporarily and launch the unmodified 2.9.3 pack.
- If the client now reaches the title screen and can connect, the server is probably healthy and the graphics add-on is the issue.
- Confirm that the OptiFine file is for Minecraft 1.12.2 and use the build recommended for this pack, rather than copying a file intended for another Minecraft release.
- Add OptiFine back only after a successful clean launch. Keep a copy of the client crash report if the problem returns.
Do not install OptiFine on the server as a remedy for a client crash. Diagnose the client separately from server-side mod loading.
Reduce world-generation freezes and out-of-memory failures
RLCraft generates demanding terrain and structures. When several players explore different, previously unseen areas, the server can spend so long generating chunks that it appears frozen. A long tick stall may end in an out-of-memory error or cause clients to time out even though the process has not technically crashed.

Pre-generate before inviting players
Use a chunk-pregeneration tool that supports your exact Minecraft 1.12.2 and Forge environment, and run it while the server is empty. Pre-generation moves the expensive terrain work out of peak play time. Make a world backup first: a failed or interrupted generation job can still leave a damaged or partially generated world.
Search results sometimes quote a radius of 10,000 blocks or a “more than 10 players” trigger for pre-generation. The originating page for those figures was not identified, so treat both numbers as unverified guidance, not a requirement. Choose an area based on available storage, generation time and the distance your players actually need.

Separate a freeze from a true crash
- Check whether the process is still using CPU or memory while the console stops printing messages.
- Look for a watchdog timeout, out-of-memory message or repeated chunk-generation entries in the log.
- Test with one player near an already generated area. If that works, new-terrain load is more likely than a broken installation.
- Lower simultaneous exploration and pre-generate more terrain before increasing player activity.
Choose RAM conservatively and interpret conflicting advice
There is no single verified official RAM number for every RLCraft server size. Published hosting guidance conflicts: one recommendation starts around 6 GB before anyone joins and adds about 0.2 GB per online player; another suggests 4 GB for one to three players, 6 GB for five to ten, and 8–10 GB for larger groups. A separate host mentions a 3–4 GB CurseForge minimum without an authoritative specification. These are hosting-company estimates, not a guaranteed requirement.

Start around 6 GB if your host allows it, then watch memory use, garbage-collection pauses, tick time and out-of-memory events during real exploration. More RAM cannot fix an incompatible Java version, a broken mod or an unreachable port. Conversely, assigning nearly all physical memory to Java can starve the operating system and make the host less stable.

Match the release on every machine
Have each player open the launcher profile and verify RLCraft 2.9.3, Minecraft 1.12.2 and the same Forge line. A host note reports clients on 2.9.2d or any 2.8.x build being rejected. That report is not tied to a retrieved official page, but matching the complete pack release is the correct first check for any modded server.
Check the listening port and firewall
- In
server.properties, confirm the intended server port. The standard value is TCP 25565. - Allow inbound TCP 25565 through the host operating system’s firewall and any router or provider firewall in front of it.
- Do not give players a private LAN address when they are connecting from the internet; use the reachable address supplied by your network or host.
- Test from a different network, such as a phone hotspot, to distinguish a local connection problem from a closed public port.
If the server console shows a player attempting to log in, the port is reachable and the next suspects are the pack version, whitelist or a mod handshake. If no attempt appears, continue with firewall, forwarding and address checks.
Check the whitelist
A whitelisted player must use the exact in-game name expected by the server. Temporarily test with the whitelist disabled only on a private, protected server; re-enable it immediately after the test. Keep authentication and access controls enabled for an internet-facing server.
Confirm the EULA and basic properties
A new Minecraft server will not continue until eula.txt contains eula=true after you have accepted Mojang’s terms. The property enable-command-block=true is reported in search results as necessary for some structures to generate correctly, but the originating source was not identified; treat it as an optional diagnostic setting rather than a proven universal fix. Change one property at a time and keep a backup.
Read crash logs instead of guessing
For a dedicated server, inspect the newest file in crash-reports and the main server log. For a player, inspect the launcher’s crash-report directory and the client log. Search upward from the final “server stopped” line for the first Caused by, mod identifier, missing dependency or Java exception.
- Java or class-loader wording: verify Java 8 and the executable selected by the launcher or service.
- A named mod during construction or registry loading: restore that mod’s tested version and check its dependencies before removing anything else.
- OptiFine, renderer or graphics classes: diagnose the client without OptiFine, then test the correct 1.12.2 build.
- Watchdog, tick-time or out-of-memory messages: reduce simultaneous exploration, pre-generate terrain and reassess memory.
- Handshake, channel or mismatched-mod messages: compare the complete server and client pack, not just Minecraft’s headline version.
Save the log from each attempt with a meaningful name, such as after-java8.txt or after-removing-mod-x.txt. That history prevents you from circling back to a failed change.
When the launcher itself crashes
Older issue threads document launcher-side startup failures for 1.12.2 RLCraft in MultiMC and in CurseForge. Those reports date from 2019–2020 and may not describe current launcher versions, operating systems or Java detection. Treat them as evidence that the failure can occur before Forge starts, not as a current universal workaround.
- Launch a clean 2.9.3 profile with Java 8 explicitly selected.
- Remove optional client mods and custom JVM arguments, then test again.
- Compare the launcher’s selected Java path with the Java path used by any standalone server.
- Only after a clean launch works, restore graphics settings, OptiFine and other client customizations one at a time.
A safe recovery sequence
Use this order when several things are wrong at once:

- Pre-generate a practical area while the server is empty if logs show chunk-generation stalls.
- Set a measured RAM allocation, beginning around 6 GB when available, and monitor actual usage rather than relying on a minimum claim.
- For connection failures, verify 2.9.3 on every client, TCP 25565, firewall rules, whitelist entries and the reachable address.
- Change only one variable per test and retain the backup until players have connected and explored safely.
What not to do
- Do not run RLCraft 2.9.3 on Java 17 or 21 simply because those versions are newer.
- Do not mix mods from another RLCraft release and assume Forge will resolve every difference.
- Do not install a client graphics mod on the dedicated server to fix a client-only crash.
- Do not delete a world before proving that a mod or generation problem is responsible.
- Do not treat an unverified RAM, radius or player-count figure as an official requirement.
- Do not open a public server by disabling authentication or access controls as a permanent “fix.”
