The easiest way to host Minecraft for PS4 players is Bedrock Realms. It keeps a world online when the owner is offline, handles most networking, and supports cross-play with PlayStation. A same-network LAN world costs no separate hosting but only works while the host is playing. A Bedrock Dedicated Server gives you the most control, but requires a Windows or Ubuntu computer, network configuration, maintenance, and a reliable way for console players to connect.
Playing with friends? Godlike.Host runs hosted Minecraft Bedrock servers from 10 data-center locations, with free DDoS protection.
PS4 uses Minecraft: Bedrock Edition for this scenario. Java Edition is not the PS4 client for cross-platform play. Whichever route you choose, players need compatible Bedrock versions, Microsoft accounts linked to their PlayStation Network accounts, and the applicable PlayStation online-multiplayer subscription.

Check these requirements before troubleshooting a server. Most connection failures come from an account, edition, version, or console-subscription mismatch rather than from the world itself.
- Bedrock Edition: The PS4 version is Bedrock. A Java server cannot accept the PS4 Bedrock client.
- Microsoft account: Each PS4 player should link a Microsoft account to PSN. From Minecraft’s title screen, choose Sign in with a Microsoft account, scan the QR code or visit microsoft.com/link, and enter the code shown on the console. Linking enables multiplayer with players on other platforms and access to Realms.
- Compatible versions: Everyone must run a compatible Bedrock release. Update the game before testing invitations or server connections.
- Online console access: Console multiplayer generally requires an active PlayStation Plus subscription (or the applicable PlayStation online plan for the account and region). Check the account’s current status if online play is unavailable.
- Privacy settings: Microsoft/Xbox privacy controls and the PlayStation account’s family or communication restrictions can block invitations, Realms, or friend joins.
Choose the right hosting method
| Route | Best for | Availability | Main requirements | Trade-offs |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| LAN world | Friends in the same home or local network | Only while the host world is running | All devices on the same LAN; Multiplayer game and Visible to LAN Players enabled; console online subscription may apply | Not an internet-wide persistent server |
| Minecraft Realms | Families and groups wanting simple, always-online hosting | Designed to stay online | Bedrock Edition, Microsoft accounts, a Realm subscription, and invitations | Ongoing subscription; plan limits and prices can change |
| Bedrock Dedicated Server | Owners who want control and an independently hosted world | Can run continuously while the host computer and network are available | Supported Windows or Ubuntu computer, official server software, configuration, firewall and network setup | More setup, maintenance, backups, and security responsibility |
Use LAN when everyone is physically nearby. Choose Realms when convenience and persistence matter more than low recurring cost. Choose a Dedicated Server when you can administer a computer and need control over files, settings, backups, or uptime.

Option 1: Host an always-online world with Realms
Realms is the managed option. Minecraft describes it as an “always-online server,” and Bedrock Realms supports cross-play that includes PlayStation. The Realm owner pays for the subscription; invited players do not need to purchase that Realm subscription themselves, although they still need the game, linked accounts, and any required console online subscription.
Set up the accounts and game
- Install or update Minecraft Bedrock Edition on every PS4 and other device that will join.
- On each PS4, open Minecraft’s title screen and select Sign in with a Microsoft account.
- Scan the displayed QR code or open microsoft.com/link on another device, then enter the one-time code shown by Minecraft.
- Confirm that the gamertag shown in Minecraft is the account you intend to use. Invites sent to a different gamertag will not reach the expected player.
Create the Realm
- From Minecraft’s Play screen, choose the option to create a new Realm or start a Realm trial or subscription where offered.
- Select the Bedrock Realm plan presented for your account and region. Prices, trial availability, player limits, and plan features are changeable, so verify the current product screen before paying.
- Create a new world or upload an existing Bedrock world. Make a backup of an important world before uploading or replacing it.
- Open the Realm’s member-management screen and add friends by their Xbox/Microsoft gamertags. If the current version offers a share-link invitation, treat that link as private and send it only to people you trust.
Join from PS4
- On the invited PS4, open Play and select the Friends or Realms area.
- Select the invitation and choose Join. The Realm should appear without the owner leaving a console running.
- If the Realm is missing, sign out and back in to the intended Microsoft account, confirm the invitation was sent to that account’s gamertag, update Minecraft, and check PlayStation Plus and privacy settings.
Manage a Realm safely
Give membership only to people who should enter the world. Operators can have powerful in-game permissions, so grant operator status sparingly. Before changing a world, download a copy from the Realm management screen when that option is available. A subscription provides hosting, not an unlimited backup history; keep independent copies of worlds that matter.

Option 2: Host a free LAN world
A LAN world is the quickest route for players in one home, dormitory, or other local network. It is not a public internet server, and the world disappears from the join list when the host stops playing.

Configure the host PS4
- Connect the host PS4 and the joining PS4 to the same local network. A wired connection can make discovery more reliable, but both devices must still be on the same LAN.
- On the host, open Minecraft and select Play.
- Find the target world, select the pencil icon beside it, and open Multiplayer.
- Enable Multiplayer game and Visible to LAN Players, then save the settings.
- Start the world and remain in it while the other player connects.
Join the LAN world
- On the second PS4, open Play, then Worlds.
- Look for the world marked as a LAN game and select it.
- If the players are already Minecraft friends and signed in online, Bedrock may show a direct friend-join entry instead of a separate LAN listing. That is still a local or online Bedrock join path; the host must remain online for the hosted world to exist.
When LAN discovery fails
- Verify both consoles received addresses from the same router and are not separated by a guest Wi-Fi network, client isolation, or a second router.
- Recheck both multiplayer switches on the host world.
- Close and reopen Minecraft on both consoles after changing account or privacy settings.
- Test with the host and joining player on the same ordinary home network before trying a mobile hotspot or managed network.
Option 3: Run the official Bedrock Dedicated Server
The Bedrock Dedicated Server (BDS) is Minecraft’s official server software for hosting a multiplayer Bedrock world separately from a player’s console. It can run continuously, but only while the host computer, server process, power, and network remain available.
Check the host computer
The official server requirements list Windows 10 version 10.0.15063 or later, Windows Server 2016 or later, or Ubuntu 22.04 LTS or later for Linux. The listed requirement is 4 GB of RAM. That is a baseline, not a promise that every large world or player count will run well; larger worlds, add-ons, simulation distance, and more simultaneous players can need additional CPU, memory, and storage.
- Use a computer that can stay powered on and connected.
- Prefer a wired connection or otherwise stable network path.
- Install security updates and restrict administrative access to the machine.
- Reserve enough disk space for the world, logs, and multiple backups.
Download and start BDS
- Download the Bedrock Dedicated Server package from Minecraft’s official download page.
- Extract the ZIP into an empty folder dedicated to the server. Do not mix its files with unrelated applications or another server installation.
- Launch the supplied executable or command-line startup file. On first start, BDS creates the initial folders and world files.
- Stop the process cleanly before editing files or copying a world. Abruptly powering off the computer can damage the world database.
Choose a world and protect access
BDS can generate a new world or use an existing Bedrock world copied into the server’s world area. Follow the official Microsoft setup guidance for selecting the world and enabling an allow-list. An allow-list is the safest default for a private group: only named players can join, even if someone discovers the address.

- Stop the server.
- Place or select the intended world using the server’s documented world configuration.
- Enable the allow-list and add each player’s Bedrock/Xbox gamertag exactly as shown in Minecraft.
- Start the server and verify the console log reports the expected world and listening state.
Set server.properties
The server.properties file controls common behavior. Open it only while the server is stopped, change one group of settings at a time, and keep a copy of the previous file.
- Game mode: Set the default mode for new players and worlds according to the group’s preference.
- Difficulty: Choose the world difficulty you want the server to enforce.
- Maximum players: Set a ceiling that fits the computer and connection.
- World: Point the server at the intended world rather than accidentally creating a new one.
- IPv4 listening port: Keep the documented Bedrock port unless you have a reason to change it; if you change it, players must use the same port and the firewall/router rules must match.
Property names and accepted values are version-dependent. If a setting is ignored, compare the spelling and value with the current official configuration documentation instead of copying a Java Edition property.
Make the server reachable
- On the host computer, allow the BDS executable or chosen Bedrock port through the operating-system firewall.
- If players are outside your home network, configure port forwarding on the router from the selected external Bedrock port to the computer’s fixed local IP address.
- Check whether the internet provider uses carrier-grade NAT or blocks inbound connections. In that case, ordinary forwarding may not work and you may need a different network arrangement or a managed service.
- Do not expose administrative panels, remote desktop, or unrelated services to the internet just to make Minecraft work.
- Send the address and port privately. A public address can attract unwanted scans and connection attempts.
Router menus differ by manufacturer and internet provider, so there is no universal forwarding screen or guaranteed port layout. The official documentation confirms the server’s port setting; your network equipment determines how that port is exposed.

Can a PS4 join a self-hosted BDS server?
Bedrock cross-play is the correct technical edition, but console support for entering arbitrary external server addresses can change with Minecraft and PlayStation versions. The PS4 interface may emphasize featured servers, friends, LAN discovery, and Realms rather than providing a permanent field for any address and port. Before committing to BDS, update Minecraft and verify the current PlayStation connection behavior for your version. Do not assume that a PC server automatically appears in the PS4 server list.
If the current console interface does not offer a supported way to enter your address, Realms or a LAN world is the dependable choice for PS4 players. Avoid unofficial DNS tricks, modified clients, or account workarounds: they can stop working after updates and can create privacy, security, or account-compliance problems.

Keep versions aligned
Update the server and clients deliberately rather than automatically updating one side first. A client that is newer or older than the server may fail to join, show a compatibility warning, or behave unpredictably. Record the working server version and update the PS4 clients to the matching Bedrock release.
Limit permissions
Use an allow-list for private servers and give operator privileges only to trusted administrators. Do not publish the server address in public social posts if the world is intended for a small group. Remove former players from the allow-list and rotate access arrangements when the group changes.
Watch resources and logs
Monitor memory, CPU, disk space, and the server log after updates or when several players join simultaneously. A full disk can prevent saves; insufficient memory can cause lag or crashes. If the server stops, preserve the log before restarting so you can identify the last error.
Quick Recap
Troubleshooting by symptom
The Realm or friend world is not visible
- Confirm the player is signed in to the Microsoft account that received the invite.
- Check that the host added the correct gamertag, not a similar display name.
- Update Minecraft on every device and verify Bedrock compatibility.
- Confirm PlayStation Plus and Microsoft/Xbox privacy settings permit multiplayer and cross-platform play.
- Have the host reopen the game or Realm, then restart Minecraft on the joining PS4.
The LAN world does not appear
- Put both devices on the same non-guest network.
- Enable both Multiplayer game and Visible to LAN Players in the host world’s edit screen.
- Keep the host inside the world while the second PS4 searches.
- Restart both consoles if the network changed after Minecraft was opened.
The dedicated server starts but nobody can connect
- Confirm the BDS process is still running and has loaded the intended world.
- Check that the client is using the server’s current Bedrock version.
- Verify the configured IPv4 port, operating-system firewall rule, and router forwarding all use the same port.
- Check that the server has not reached its maximum-player setting.
- Test from inside the home network first, then test from an external connection. A successful local test with a failed external test points to forwarding, ISP NAT, or firewall configuration.
- Confirm the player is on the allow-list and that the gamertag spelling matches.
A player is kicked after joining
- Check whether the world is full or the player was removed from the allow-list.
- Look for version mismatch messages in the client and server logs.
- Review permissions, operator changes, and add-ons installed on the world.
- Restore the most recent known-good backup if a configuration or world change introduced corruption.
Which method should you use?
- Choose LAN for a quick session with people sharing one network and no need for the world to remain online.
- Choose Realms when PS4 players live in different places, the owner may be offline, and you want the least networking work.
- Choose BDS when you need file-level control, custom administration, continuous hosting on your own hardware, and are prepared to maintain networking, backups, and security.
