How to Host a Hermitcraft Modsauce 2 Server in Minecraft (1.7.10)

Hermitcraft Modsauce 2 targets Minecraft 1.7.10 and is distributed through ATLauncher. This guide explains managed one-click hosting, cautious self-hosting, RAM choices, Java and port requirements, client matching, and fixes for common errors.

The simplest way to host Hermitcraft Modsauce 2 is to rent a managed Minecraft server that lists the pack as a one-click installation. The pack targets Minecraft 1.7.10 and is distributed through ATLauncher. If you self-host, you will need the correct 1.7.10 server files, a compatible Java installation (Java 8 is the conventional choice for this era of modpacks), enough memory, and network configuration for anyone joining from outside your home.

There is no single official RAM requirement published in the material available for this pack. Hosting companies give different planning figures: roughly 2 GB for a smooth small setup, 4 GB as a practical minimum plan, 5 GB or more for friends or a public server, and about 7 GB for comfortable play according to another host. Treat those as vendor recommendations rather than Mojang or Hermitcraft specifications.

What Hermitcraft Modsauce 2 is

Hermitcraft Modsauce 2 is a modpack for Minecraft 1.7.10. An ATLauncher listing is dedicated to the pack, and a separate listing identifies it as “HermitCraft ModSauce 2 Modpack (1.7.10).” That version matters: a server running another Minecraft release will not accept clients running this pack, and a client with a different modpack revision can fail during the handshake even when the game version appears correct.

Keep the pack’s name exact when searching installation menus. The Modrinth project called Hermitcraft Server Pack is a different pack, not an alternative download for Modsauce 2. Installing that project on the server or on players’ computers can produce missing-mod, registry, or connection errors.

Choose managed hosting or self-hosting

Option What you do Best for Main trade-off
Managed host Select Hermitcraft Modsauce 2 in the provider’s Minecraft software or modpack selector, then start the instance. Groups that want the least setup and a web control panel. You pay a recurring plan and must use the provider’s supported pack workflow.
Self-hosted computer or VPS Obtain the pack’s server files, install the compatible Java runtime, configure memory and the server agreement, and handle networking, updates, backups, and security yourself. Administrators who already maintain a machine and want complete control. More troubleshooting and no confirmed universal installer procedure for this specific pack.
LAN-only home server Run the server on your network and have players connect using the host computer’s local address. People playing in one home or office. Players on the internet cannot join unless you later configure remote access.

For a first server, managed hosting removes the most error-prone work: finding a matching server distribution, installing it in the provider’s expected layout, and exposing the machine safely. Self-hosting can cost less when you already own suitable hardware, but the pack-specific loader and file layout should be verified from ATLauncher or the pack’s own server files before you commit to a procedure.

How much RAM to allocate

Use the number of players, view distance, and other services on the machine to choose a plan. The following figures are published by hosting vendors and are not official requirements:

Published guidance How to interpret it
2 GB recommended by BisectHosting for smooth operation A starting point for a small, lightly loaded instance; leave operating-system overhead outside the allocation.
4 GB minimum plan from Stickypiston A sensible floor for a small private group when the host has additional headroom.
5 GB or more from Stickypiston for friends or a public server Allow extra memory as concurrent players, loaded chunks, and automation increase.
About 7 GB recommended minimum by ScalaCube A more conservative comfort target, especially if you expect several players or heavier activity.

Because the sources disagree, start with a plan that has room to increase rather than treating one figure as a guaranteed requirement. A four-player private world might begin around 4 GB if the host’s panel permits it, then be raised when the server reports memory pressure or long garbage-collection pauses. Do not assign all physical RAM to Java: the operating system, control panel, backups, and other services also need memory.

Managed hosting: one-click installation

Several providers advertise Modsauce 2 as a selectable installation. BisectHosting says its Minecraft selector creates a server with the pack pre-installed. ScalaCube describes a one-click installation through its control panel. Labels and menu locations change, so use the provider’s current panel rather than relying on an old screenshot.

  1. Create a Minecraft server instance. Choose a plan with enough RAM for your group and select a location reasonably close to most players. Do not buy a generic vanilla server if the panel has a dedicated modpack option.
  2. Open the software, modpack, or installer menu. Search for “Hermitcraft Modsauce 2.” Confirm that the entry identifies Minecraft 1.7.10 and is not the similarly named Modrinth “Hermitcraft Server Pack.”
  3. Install the pack. Use the panel’s install, reinstall, or one-click button. Installation can overwrite an existing world, so create a backup first if the instance is not new.
  4. Set the memory limit. Apply the plan’s available RAM, beginning with a modest allocation appropriate to your player count. Keep some host memory free for the operating system and panel.
  5. Start the server and read the console. The first launch may take longer while libraries and configuration files are created. Wait until the console indicates that the server has finished starting before attempting to connect.
  6. Install the same client pack. Every player should use ATLauncher’s Hermitcraft Modsauce 2 entry and the same pack version shown by the server. A matching Minecraft version alone is not enough.
  7. Copy the server address and port. Managed hosts normally display a hostname and port in the connection panel. Enter both exactly in Minecraft’s multiplayer screen; do not substitute a default port unless the provider explicitly uses it.
  8. Test with one operator. Have one player join, move around, open inventories, and travel far enough to load new chunks. Check the console for missing-mod, authentication, or memory errors before inviting everyone.

Panel settings worth checking

  • Automatic restarts: Schedule them during an off-peak period only after confirming that the world saves correctly.
  • Backups: Enable the provider’s automated snapshots if available and periodically download a copy you control.
  • Server visibility: Keep the address private until permissions and the operator account are configured.
  • Log access: Make sure you can retrieve the console and latest log; error text is essential for diagnosing mod conflicts.
  • Version locking: Do not click an automatic “latest” update if it changes the pack or Minecraft version without checking every player’s client.

Self-hosting: what is known and what you must verify

A self-hosted installation is possible, but the reviewed references do not publish a confirmed, pack-specific server tutorial or state the loader explicitly. Modsauce 2 is 1.7.10; Fabric did not exist for that release, so Forge is a reasonable expectation, not a documented fact. Verify the loader, required libraries, and server files in the ATLauncher pack entry or the files supplied with the pack before launching a production world.

Prepare the machine

  • Use a 64-bit operating system and a stable wired connection where possible.
  • Install the Java runtime required by the pack. Java 8 is the conventional runtime for 1.7.10 modpacks, but confirm the exact build against the pack files or launcher instructions. Newer Java releases can break old launchers or mods.
  • Reserve storage for the server, libraries, logs, backups, and world growth. Keep backups on a different disk or machine.
  • Create a dedicated operating-system account and a separate server directory instead of running the process as an administrator or root user.

Obtain and validate server files

  1. Install Hermitcraft Modsauce 2 in ATLauncher so you can see the exact pack revision and included mods.
  2. Look for an official server download, server pack, or export function associated with that same revision. Do not copy a client directory blindly: some client-only mods and launcher metadata are not valid on a dedicated server.
  3. Record the Minecraft version, loader version, and mod list. Every player should later reproduce those values through ATLauncher.
  4. Scan the startup files and read the included instructions before changing configuration. If no server distribution is provided, a generic Forge tutorial may not produce a working Modsauce 2 server.

First launch and the EULA

Once the verified server files are in place, launch the supplied server script or jar from its directory. A typical 1.7.10 workflow creates eula.txt on the first run. Open that file, read Mojang’s terms, and change eula=false to eula=true only if you agree. Start the server again and wait for a completed startup message before connecting. The exact jar name and command are pack-dependent, so use the script included with the server files rather than guessing.

Memory flags

Java memory flags are commonly written as -Xms for the initial heap and -Xmx for the maximum heap. For example, an administrator might test a maximum of -Xmx3G on a small private server, then adjust after observing actual usage. That value is an example, not a Modsauce 2 requirement. Match the maximum to the vendor guidance and available physical RAM, and avoid setting it so high that the operating system starts swapping.

Local and internet connections

On the same home network, players can usually connect to the host computer’s private IPv4 address and the server port. Players outside the network need a stable public address or hostname and a router rule forwarding the server’s TCP port (the conventional default is 25565) to the host machine. Port forwarding exposes a service to the internet; use a firewall rule limited to the required port, keep the server software updated within the pack’s supported versions, and never publish administrative credentials.

Make every client match

Have each player install the pack through ATLauncher rather than assembling mods by hand. Record the pack revision displayed by the launcher and make sure the server was built from that same revision. Ask players to remove duplicate manually installed jars from the instance’s mods directory; duplicate or incompatible versions can cause a “missing mods” or registry mismatch error. If one player can join while another cannot, compare the launcher profile, Minecraft version, loader version, and mod list before changing server settings.

Connection and startup troubleshooting

The server stops immediately

  • Read the first error and the final “caused by” section in the console log.
  • Check that Java is the expected major version, commonly Java 8 for this generation, and that the process is using the intended 64-bit executable.
  • Confirm that the server files came from the same pack revision as the client. A client-only installation or an incomplete library download can terminate before the world loads.
  • Lower the memory allocation only if the host is exhausting physical RAM; increasing -Xmx cannot fix a missing library or incompatible Java class.

“Incompatible mod set” or missing-mod errors

  • Compare the exact pack revision on the server and each client.
  • Do not substitute the Modrinth “Hermitcraft Server Pack”; it is a separate project.
  • Check for hand-added, removed, or duplicated jars in client and server mods folders.
  • Use the loader and dependency versions bundled with the verified server pack instead of downloading random replacements.

Players time out or cannot see the server

  • Test locally first. If local players can join, inspect the public path: router forwarding, host firewall, and the address or port displayed by the provider.
  • Confirm that the server is listening on the same port you entered in Minecraft.
  • Some internet providers place customers behind carrier-grade NAT, which prevents ordinary inbound forwarding. In that case, use a managed host or a private networking solution rather than repeatedly changing router settings.

Lag, freezes, or “can’t keep up” messages

  • Watch memory and CPU graphs while players explore new terrain. New chunk generation is usually heavier than standing in one area.
  • Reduce the server’s view or simulation distance if the panel exposes those settings, then retest with the same player count.
  • Allocate additional RAM within the host’s plan limits, but leave enough for the operating system.
  • Schedule restarts only as maintenance, not as a substitute for finding a repeating mod or world problem.

Backups, permissions, and safe administration

  1. Stop the server cleanly before copying a world folder; copying while it is writing can produce an inconsistent backup.
  2. Keep at least one recent local backup and one copy off the server machine. Test restoring to a separate directory before you need it.
  3. Give operator privileges only to trusted administrators. Use the server’s whitelist or allow-list for a private group.
  4. Do not publish the console, remote-management password, or backup download links. Rotate credentials if they are exposed.
  5. Document the pack revision, Java version, memory setting, and configuration changes. This record makes a rollback possible after an update.

A practical decision checklist

  • Choose managed hosting when you want the fastest route, a web panel, automated backups, and no router administration.
  • Choose self-hosting when you already have reliable hardware, understand Java and firewalls, and are prepared to verify the pack’s server distribution yourself.
  • Choose LAN-only play when everyone is in one location and you do not need internet access.
  • Start around 4 GB for a small group only as a planning choice between the published vendor figures; increase it when monitoring shows the world needs more.
  • Stop and verify whenever a download is labeled “Hermitcraft Server Pack” without explicitly naming Modsauce 2 and Minecraft 1.7.10.

Final setup sequence

Install the exact Modsauce 2 profile in ATLauncher, select a managed one-click server if you want the lowest-effort route, and confirm that the panel reports Minecraft 1.7.10. For self-hosting, obtain the matching server files, verify the loader and Java requirement from those files, accept the EULA only after reading it, allocate memory appropriate to the machine, and configure LAN or forwarded access. Test with one player, make a restorable backup, and only then open the server to the rest of the group.
