Price and availability: the EV6 starts lower, while R2 trims arrive on different schedules
Kia announced 2026 U.S. EV6 starting pricing of $37,900 plus $1,545 destination. That is a starting MSRP, not a delivered price; options, taxes and local offers can change what you pay. Kia’s detailed pricing page lists the Light Long Range RWD at $41,200 and notes that pricing, equipment and specifications can change without notice. Rivian’s U.S. R2 page, accessed October 4, 2026, lists three trims with different stated availability. Rivian says prices and options may change, and taxes and fees may vary by state.

Rivian’s figures are listed on its R2 model page. Treat the trim timing as the page’s stated availability, not a guaranteed delivery date. The EV6’s announced base price is below the listed price of R2 Performance, but those are not like-for-like configurations. Compare the EV6 trim and equipment you would actually buy with the R2 trim you can obtain, adding destination, options, taxes and any current incentives.

Range and charging: the published numbers are not a matched comparison
R2’s ranges are preliminary manufacturer estimates
Rivian lists estimated ranges of 275 miles for R2 Standard and 330 miles for Premium and Performance. The company explicitly says these preliminary estimates are based on the EPA test cycle and are not official EPA values. They should not be treated as certification or as a promise of the range a particular driver will get. Kia’s retrieved 2026 information does not establish complete, trim-by-trim EV6 EPA range figures, and there is no common independent road test here; a numeric range winner cannot be supported by these figures.
Charging figures measure different things
Kia’s 2026 specifications list maximum DC fast-charge input of 180 kW for EV6 Light and 240 kW for Light Long Range, Wind and GT-Line. Those are listed peak input rates, not a stated time to charge from one battery percentage to another. Rivian claims the R2 can charge from 10% to 80% in under 30 minutes with a DC fast charger and may add 150 miles in 15 minutes under optimal conditions. Rivian warns that actual charging speeds vary with battery capacity, state of charge, temperature, charger capacity, weather and site-specific conditions. A peak kW figure and an ideal-condition charge-time claim are not directly comparable tests.

Rivian says every R2 has a NACS port and advertises access to more than 21,000 Tesla Superchargers in the U.S. and Canada. Before choosing either vehicle, check connector and adapter details, network access, route coverage and charging performance for the exact model year and trim. Home charging matters too: a Level 2 charger may be useful, but whether you need one depends on your existing electrical service and access to charging.

Space, ground clearance and towing: R2 publishes adventure-focused numbers
Rivian describes R2 as a two-row, five-passenger midsize SUV. Its page lists 90.1 cubic feet of total storage, 28.7 cubic feet of rear cargo area, and 79.4 cubic feet with the rear seats folded, along with 9.6 inches of ground clearance. These are manufacturer figures. The available evidence does not establish matching Kia cargo or ground-clearance figures, so it does not support a numeric claim that one vehicle is roomier or better off-road.
Rivian lists R2 towing capacity of up to 4,400 pounds when equipped with the Tow Package. That maximum does not apply to every R2 configuration: Rivian’s page shows 3,500 pounds for Standard, while Premium and Performance list 4,400 pounds with specified equipment. Confirm the capacity and required package for the precise trim you are considering. If towing is important, compare the vehicle’s rated capacity with your loaded trailer and the effect towing will have on range and charging stops.

Which one should you buy?
Choose the EV6 if lower entry pricing is your priority
The announced 2026 EV6 starting price makes Kia the lower-priced entry point among the published figures here. Decide which EV6 trim and equipment meet your needs, then compare its actual local price—including destination and options—with the R2 configuration you can buy. Do not assume the entry-level EV6 and a higher-output, all-wheel-drive R2 are equivalent simply because both are electric SUVs.
Consider the R2 if its specific utility and configuration suit you
The R2’s published ground clearance, cargo figures and towing options may be relevant if you regularly carry bulky gear, drive rough roads or tow. Its three listed trims also span rear-wheel-drive and dual-motor AWD configurations and a broad range of stated power. Those manufacturer specifications are reasons to investigate a configuration, not proof that it will outperform the EV6 in real-world conditions.

Make the decision with your own driving and charging routine
- Availability: Check whether the trim you want is actually orderable and when the seller expects delivery.
- Price: Compare the same kind of equipment and drivetrain, including destination, options, state taxes and available incentives.
- Range: Separate official EPA values from preliminary estimates and independent road tests; the R2 figures above are preliminary and not official EPA values.
- Charging: Check charging at home and on your regular routes, plus connector and network access for the specific model year. Do not treat peak charging power as a direct substitute for charge time.
- Utility: Match seating, cargo, clearance and towing capacity to your actual needs, and verify any required R2 tow equipment.
