If you need to know that movement happened, a motion sensor may be enough. If you need to see what happened, a camera can provide live or recorded video—but it also creates visual data that must be protected. Choose based on the evidence you actually need, then check how the device stores and shares its records.
What does each device reveal?
| Need | Motion sensor | Security camera |
|---|---|---|
| Detect activity | Reports a motion event; it does not show who or what moved. | Can detect activity and provide live or recorded visual verification, depending on the model and settings. |
| Review what happened | Usually provides an event or alert rather than visual evidence. | May let you review footage; audio capture and recording features vary by model. |
| Privacy questions | Check where event history is kept, who receives alerts, and which accounts or services can access it. | Check video and any audio capture, storage location, retention, sharing, remote access, and account security. |
Google’s Google Home & Nest Privacy Hub distinguishes sensor information such as detected motion from audio and video data. A sensor can reduce visual exposure, but connected systems may still retain event history or account data. There is no established, across-the-board statistic showing how much more private one device category is than the other; the actual result depends on the product and its configuration.

When is a motion sensor the better fit?
Choose a sensor when an alert is enough—for example, when you want to know that a room or entry point was disturbed but do not need to identify the person or review a recording. It avoids collecting indoor images, but it still has setup and data dependencies. Find out whether it needs a hub or base station, what connection it uses, where alerts and activity history appear, and who can access them.

Example: Ring Alarm Motion Detector (2nd Gen)
Ring’s support documentation describes this indoor sensor as using Z-Wave and requiring Ring Alarm or Alarm Pro. It can be mounted on a flat wall or in a room corner and includes pet-sensitivity features. This is one product example, not a recommendation for every household; confirm compatibility and current product details before buying.

When does a camera justify the extra exposure?
A camera makes sense when seeing what happened is important: you may need visual confirmation before responding, or recorded footage for a specific security purpose. A camera does not automatically provide useful evidence—coverage, recording settings, storage, and access all matter. If an alert alone meets your need, recording indoor video may collect more than necessary.
For a specific example, Blink’s documentation for Outdoor and Indoor (3rd Gen) says those cameras offer two privacy zones that block areas from clips and thumbnail images. It describes motion clips as eligible for cloud storage, or local storage with a Sync Module 2 and a separately purchased USB drive. These details apply to the named generation; check the current model’s documentation rather than assuming the same features or accessories apply to other cameras.

How should you compare storage, access, and security?
Before choosing a camera, establish where footage is stored, how long it is retained, whether remote viewing can be disabled, and how access is shared with household members or others. Local storage and cloud storage have different trade-offs: local recording reduces reliance on a cloud account but still needs physical and network protection; cloud recording can enable remote access but makes account controls and the provider’s handling practices especially relevant. A feature such as encryption or a privacy zone helps address a particular risk; it does not by itself make a camera private or secure.
- Encryption: Check whether the manufacturer explains how footage and account data are protected in transit and at rest.
- Account protection: Use a strong, unique password and turn on two-factor authentication if available. Limit accounts and permissions to people who need access.
- Updates: Keep the camera, app, router, and other relevant devices updated.
- Remote viewing and sharing: Review who can watch or download footage, and whether remote viewing can be switched off without losing a function you rely on.
- Retention: Check whether recordings are saved automatically, how long they remain, and how to delete them.
- Network: Secure your home Wi-Fi and router; camera security also depends on the network and account connected to it.
The FTC’s consumer guidance recommends researching encryption and account security, updating software and apps, using strong unique passwords, considering two-factor authentication, securing the home network, and reviewing remote-viewing and sharing settings. The UK National Cyber Security Centre similarly advises disabling remote viewing when it is not needed, while noting that doing so can affect motion alerts or smart-home integrations. Check the consequences for your specific setup before turning it off.

The FTC’s 2023 Ring release described allegations that employees and contractors had access to customer videos and that hackers took control of accounts and cameras. The release described a proposed order that required court approval at the time. It is dated evidence of why access controls and security practices deserve scrutiny; it does not establish that all current Ring products have identical practices or vulnerabilities. In the release, then-FTC Bureau of Consumer Protection Director Samuel Levine said: “Ring’s disregard for privacy and security exposed consumers to spying and harassment.”
Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone.Where should you place a camera or sensor?
Placement determines what a device can observe. Aim cameras only at the area needed for the security purpose, and avoid views into bedrooms, bathrooms, or other private spaces. Use privacy zones where available, but check whether they cover live views as well as saved clips and thumbnails. Also check for views of a neighbor’s property, shared areas, or public space.

The UK government’s domestic CCTV guidance, updated 21 May 2026, says data-protection obligations may apply when a home CCTV system captures images beyond the boundary of private domestic property, including neighbors’ homes or gardens, shared spaces, or public areas. This is UK-specific guidance, not a statement of law elsewhere; check the rules where you live. The National Protective Security Authority’s home security systems guidance also advises avoiding cameras—particularly those with audio—in places where they would intrude on privacy. Treat placement as a way to minimize unnecessary capture, not as legal advice.

- Choose a motion sensor if a notification that movement occurred is sufficient and you want to avoid indoor video collection.
- Choose a camera if seeing or reviewing what happened is important enough to justify collecting footage and managing its access, storage, and retention.
- Before either choice, check system compatibility, alert routing, activity-history access, and the device’s network or base-station requirements.
- For a camera, narrow its field of view, minimize unnecessary audio or video capture, and confirm that the privacy and storage controls meet your needs.
The FTC-hosted 2020 paper Ask the Experts: What Should Be on an IoT Privacy and Security Label? uses a smart security camera and a presence sensor as examples of privacy-label design. It is a data-transparency concept, not evidence that one type of device performs better on privacy than the other.
