If an iPhone Lock Screen widget has vanished, first check whether you’re viewing a different Lock Screen or whether the widget is still configured. If it remains visible but shows old information, check the app’s data and permissions, then work through Apple’s general app troubleshooting steps. These symptoms can have different causes, and no single fix is guaranteed for every third-party widget.
First, identify what changed
Is the widget missing from the Lock Screen, or is it still there but showing stale information? A missing widget calls for a configuration check. A stale widget calls for checking the app and the data it displays.

- Missing: Check which Lock Screen is active, then inspect its widget area.
- Stale: Open the app represented by the widget and see whether it can load current information.
- Only one widget is affected: Focus first on that app, its settings, and any relevant permissions.
- Several widgets are affected: Check whether their apps can update, then try the general restart and update steps below.

Check other Lock Screens
Swipe right from the Lock Screen to view other available widgets and Lock Screens. The widget may be configured on a different Lock Screen from the one currently displayed; check before assuming that it or its app was deleted.

Restore it in the Lock Screen editor
- Touch and hold the Lock Screen.
- Tap Customize, then tap Add Widgets.
- Choose a widget, or drag it into the widget area.
- Tap Done.
Apple says the widget area needs enough room. If there is not space, remove an existing widget before adding another. Lock Screen widgets require iOS 16 or later. Follow Apple’s instructions for adding and editing iPhone widgets.
Look inside a Smart Stack
If the missing item belongs to a Smart Stack, inspect the stack rather than assuming the widget was removed. Smart Stacks can rotate or suggest widgets based on context such as time, location, and activity. If a widget is visible but not updating
Check the app’s information first
Open the app that provides the widget and check whether it can show current information there. If the app’s own data is also old or unavailable, the problem may extend beyond the Lock Screen display. Check the iPhone’s connectivity and the app’s account or refresh settings where relevant. These checks help narrow the symptom; they do not establish a universal cause or guarantee that a widget will refresh.

- Close and reopen the app.
- Restart the iPhone.
- Check the App Store for an update to the app. If none is available, check for an iOS update.
Apple’s full instructions are on its support page for an iPhone or iPad app that stops responding, closes unexpectedly, or won’t open.
For a location-based widget, check Location Services
A widget that relies on location—for example, a location-based weather display—may not have the access its app needs. On the iPhone, go to Settings > Privacy & Security > Location Services, then review the affected app’s setting. The permission needed depends on the app and feature, so check that app rather than changing access for every app. Apple notes that turning Location Services off can limit the performance of location-dependent apps. When to contact the app developer or Apple
If one app’s widget remains broken after checking the app’s data, permissions, and updates, consult the app’s help and contact its developer. Deleting and redownloading the app is a later option: Apple warns that deleting an app may remove data stored in it. Before doing so, confirm that you can recover or sync anything important.
If widgets from several apps remain affected after restarting and updating, contact Apple Support for help. The cited Apple guidance does not establish a widget-specific reset procedure, so avoid broad settings resets as a first response.
