How to Choose a Home EV Charger for a Rivian R2

For most Rivian R2 owners, the choice comes down to electrical capacity and how much range you need to replace overnight. Rivian says a hardwired NACS wall charger on a 60-amp circuit is its fastest home setup, adding up to 38 miles of range per hour under optimal conditions. A portable charger on a suitable NEMA 14-50 outlet is slower—about 25 miles per hour—while a standard 120-volt outlet adds only a few miles per hour. These are Rivian estimates, not guaranteed charging rates. Have a licensed electrician assess your home before choosing or installing equipment.

Compare the three home-charging setups

Rivian’s published guidance is primarily for U.S. and North American electrical systems. Its miles-per-hour figures vary with factors including battery, power source, state of charge, temperature, weather, charger capacity and site conditions. Use them to compare setups, not as promises of what your R2 will add every hour.

Hardwired Rivian NACS wall charger Rivian’s home guide describes 11 kW and up to 38 miles of range per hour. The product listing specifies up to 48 A and 11.5 kW on single-phase 240 V AC, with a 24-foot cord. Drivers who want faster overnight replenishment and can support a dedicated circuit. Requires professional installation and adequate electrical capacity.
Rivian portable NACS charger on NEMA 14-50 Around 7.6 kW and about 25 miles of range per hour; the product listing specifies up to 32 A and 7.6 kW, with an 18-foot cord. Drivers with a suitable existing 14-50 receptacle or who value portability. Have the receptacle and circuit checked; appearance alone does not establish that an outlet is safe or suitable.
Rivian portable charger on 120 V A few miles of range per hour. Short commutes, occasional top-offs or backup charging. Much slower than Level 2; it may not replace substantial daily driving energy overnight.

Figures are from Rivian’s R2: Charging at Home guidance and its NACS wall charger and NACS portable charger listings, accessed October 4, 2026. The home guide describes the hardwired setup as a wall charger on a 60-amp circuit; product electrical ratings and the circuit rating are related specifications, but not interchangeable measures.

Choose based on your electrical setup and routine

Choose hardwired Level 2 for faster recovery

If you regularly drive enough that a slow top-off will not meet your needs, the hardwired wall charger is Rivian’s speed-first option. The home guide says it is the fastest setup and describes a 60-amp circuit; Rivian’s product listing rates the NACS wall charger at up to 48 A and 11.5 kW on single-phase 240 V AC. A licensed electrician should determine whether your service and panel can support the circuit and what installation requires.

#1 Best Overall
Rivian Wall Charger - NACS
  • Get up to 25 miles of range per hour for R1S and R1T, and 38 miles of range per hour for R2*
  • Compatible with Model Year 2026+ Rivian vehicles
  • WiFi-connected for software updates
  • Charging speeds vary based on various factors, including battery type, battery capacity, charging power source, battery state of charge, temperature, charger capacity, weather, site-specific conditions and more. Stated speeds reflect optimal conditions.

Choose a 14-50 setup when the outlet and circuit are suitable

The portable NACS charger on a NEMA 14-50 outlet offers Level 2 charging without the wall unit’s stated maximum rate. It can be a practical fit if you already have an appropriate outlet in the right location, or if portability matters. Do not assume an existing receptacle is correctly wired, in good condition or adequate for sustained EV charging just because it has the right shape; ask an electrician to inspect it and its circuit.

Use 120 V for modest needs or as a fallback

A standard outlet may cover a short commute or occasional top-off, but Rivian describes its contribution as only a few miles of range per hour. If you need to restore substantial range regularly, compare Level 2 options rather than treating 120 V as equivalent.

Check compatibility, placement and permission

  • Connector and model year: Rivian says 2026-and-newer vehicles, including R2, have a native NACS port, and lists both cited NACS chargers as compatible with 2026+ Rivians. Confirm compatibility for the exact vehicle and charger before purchase. DC fast-charging adapters are not part of an AC home-charger setup.
  • Cable reach: Measure from the proposed charger or outlet to the vehicle’s charge port with the vehicle parked where it will actually charge. The wall charger listing specifies a 24-foot cord; the portable charger listing specifies an 18-foot cord.
  • Installation and housing: Rivian recommends a licensed electrician. If you rent or live in a condo, first ask the landlord, property manager or building association about permission, shared charging access and any electrical work. Rules and available capacity depend on the property and local requirements.
  • Cost and incentives: Installation costs and utility, state or local incentives depend on location and site conditions. Check current programs where you live rather than relying on a national estimate.

Plan charging around your schedule

If your utility has lower off-peak rates, check its current time-of-use rules and use the R2 app’s charging schedule feature to align charging with the eligible hours. Rivian recommends a 70–80% charge target for everyday use and 100% for road trips. Your own charging routine should reflect the range you need and the schedule you set.

If home installation or access is not feasible, Rivian’s guidance also addresses charging away from home; consider your regular public-charging options and access before deciding that a home setup is essential.
