How to Plan a Rivian Road Trip With Charging Stops

Use Rivian Trip Planner to map charging stops, then verify predicted range, each charger’s access, and connector compatibility for your vehicle’s model year.

Enter your destination in Rivian navigation or the Rivian mobile app, then review the route and every proposed charging stop before you leave. Rivian Trip Planner can add the charging stops it estimates are needed, but the route’s arrival-range estimates depend on conditions, and each charger must be compatible with your vehicle’s model year.

Build the route in Rivian navigation or the app

  1. Enter your destination. Rivian says Trip Planner routes through needed charging stops when you choose a destination. You can plan in the vehicle or the mobile app; Rivian also describes sending a phone-planned route to the vehicle. Rivian charging and Trip Planner and Rivian technology overview.
  2. Inspect the proposed route. Rivian describes navigation as combining Google Maps traffic and route information with EV-specific range estimates and charging-stop selection. Check the actual stops, route, and predicted arrival range rather than assuming the plan is suitable without review. Rivian technology overview.
  3. Check each stop’s connector and access. Confirm that your vehicle can use the connector and that the location is accessible to you. Model year matters for NACS fast charging; see the compatibility details below.
  4. Review the stop’s charge target. For a planned stop, Rivian says the recommended target appears in the vehicle and app, and the system can notify you when it is reached. Follow the target shown for your route; Rivian’s guidance does not establish one universal charge percentage for every trip. Rivian software update article.

Check charger compatibility by model year

Rivian lists public charging access at CCS and NACS locations, including Tesla Superchargers, but the connection method depends on the vehicle. Rivian says 2026-and-newer vehicles have a built-in NACS port; 2022–2025 vehicles need a NACS DC adapter to use compatible Superchargers. Rivian charging page.

For an eligible 2022–2025 vehicle, Rivian says its NACS DC adapter is available through the Gear Shop. This does not mean every NACS charger or third-party adapter will work: check your vehicle’s year, the adapter specifications, and the charger’s access details before relying on that stop. Use the route estimate, not advertised range, to judge each leg

A vehicle’s advertised range is not a guaranteed distance between road-trip stops. Rivian’s 2024 R1S owner guide says estimated range depends on vehicle configuration, drive mode, elevation, weather, and driving speed. Those factors can change the range available on the particular leg you are planning, so assess the predicted arrival range in the route rather than applying a fixed miles-between-stops rule. 2024 Rivian R1S owner guide.

Make changes from the phone or vehicle

Rivian says drivers can plan on a phone, add a stop or change the order of stops, then send the trip to the vehicle. In a Rivian interview, Chief Software Officer Wassym Bensaid described that phone-to-vehicle workflow and said drivers can alter their planned stops. The available route and charger details may change, so review the itinerary again if you make changes. Rivian: “Peace of Mind, One Software Update at a Time”.
