A security camera can sometimes detect motion or human presence even when it has no viewable video. That is possible when a separate sensor—such as a passive infrared (PIR) detector or radar sensor—has its own active sensing path. If detection depends on the camera image, a shutter or camera privacy control may stop it too. A black preview alone does not reveal which design your device uses.
Detection and video are different functions
The image sensor creates data for the video stream. Motion or presence detection may instead come from a separate physical detector, analysis of camera images, or a combination of methods. A device can therefore report an event or a simple present/absent state without providing a viewable recording.

Not every security camera has an independent motion sensor. Arlo says most of its devices use PIR for motion detection, but designs vary across products and platforms. The manufacturer’s documentation for the exact model is the best guide to what remains active when its image is blocked.

Passive infrared (PIR)
PIR means passive infrared. A PIR detector senses changes in infrared radiation across its field of view; it does not need to create a video image. Hikvision describes PIR detection as distinguishing infrared-radiation differences between human bodies and other objects, and Arlo says most of its devices use PIR for motion detection. If the PIR detector and its event path remain active, it may trigger a motion event while the video is unavailable.

A PIR trigger is not a picture or an identification of who moved. It reports detected movement; it does not inherently show what happened.
Radar and human-presence sensing
Motion detection generally signals that movement occurred. A presence feature may instead aim to report whether someone is present or absent, sometimes as a continuing binary state. Microsoft’s Windows guidance lists radar and computer vision as possible presence-sensing technologies and distinguishes facial-presence sensing from sensors that report presence without identifying a face.

One product-specific example is TP-Link’s Tapo T150, which uses radar-based presence judgment and lets users configure a confirmation time before the sensor changes to “Absence.” Its support documentation says environmental vibration, airflow, reflections, movement behind a mounting surface, or a brief re-entry can affect detection or restart the absence timer. These are examples for that product, not universal radar behavior.

Some presence features rely on a camera or camera-related signal. Microsoft includes facial-presence detection among possible approaches. When the feature depends on the imaging path, a physical shutter, kill switch, or camera privacy setting may affect it differently than a separate PIR or radar sensor.

What a “no video” screen can mean
A black or dark feed is a symptom, not a diagnosis. One documented cause is an engaged privacy shutter or kill switch. Microsoft’s Windows driver guidance explains that, in supported designs, the camera may remain available to Windows and applications while the image or video stream is black, dark, or replaced with a static image. The guidance also describes reporting shutter state to the operating system so an app can explain that the lens is blocked.
This does not mean motion alerts always continue with the shutter closed. A separate sensor can keep working if it has an independent physical and event path; a presence feature sharing the camera’s imaging path may be interrupted. Microsoft’s hardware guidance recommends a separate path for shared camera/presence hardware and notes that a shutter can interfere when both functions rely on the same camera path.

The U.S. Department of Homeland Security notes that cameras may include motion detection and commonly use CCD or CMOS image sensors. That distinction helps explain how imaging and detection can differ, but it cannot identify the cause of a particular camera’s blank feed.

What this means for privacy
A blank preview does not prove that every sensor is off. A physical shutter or kill switch is intended to block image capture, but another sensor may still detect presence if it operates independently. Conversely, a camera-derived presence feature may stop when the camera path is blocked. Check the manufacturer’s instructions for the exact model and privacy mode rather than assuming either outcome.

For Windows presence implementations, Microsoft says data should be processed locally and image metadata should not be exposed to the Windows sensor stack; its hardware guidance also asks devices to report the detection type accurately. These are Windows design requirements and recommendations, not evidence that every consumer security camera uses the same architecture.
What to check when there is no picture
- Separate the symptoms. Note whether only the video feed is blank or whether motion alerts have stopped as well. Those functions may use different hardware and event paths.
- Check the shutter or camera kill switch. If the device has a physical privacy control, see whether it is engaged. Where supported, check whether the app reports the shutter state; Microsoft documents shutter reporting so applications can tell users when the camera is blocked.
- Look up the exact model and privacy mode. Consult its manual or support page to confirm whether motion or presence detection is independent of the camera image. Do not infer continued detection from the presence of a motion-alert setting alone.
- Treat persistent missing video as a separate issue. The sensor behavior described here does not diagnose power, network, account permissions, recording settings, firmware, or hardware faults. Their troubleshooting steps depend on the make and model.
How to compare sensor options
| Sensor approach | What it senses or reports | What no video means | Key qualification |
|---|---|---|---|
| PIR | Changes in infrared radiation that can trigger a motion event. | It may still trigger if the detector and event path are independent of the imaging path. | It does not provide an image or identify who moved. Product designs vary. |
| Radar-based presence | May report a continuing present/absent state rather than only a movement event. | It may function independently of video if it has a separate sensor path. | Timing and environmental effects are product-specific; check the device documentation. |
| Camera-derived presence | Presence inferred from camera images or related signals. | A shutter or camera privacy control may block the feature if it depends on the imaging path. | Behavior depends on the device’s design and privacy implementation. |
Compatibility also matters: a standalone detector should not be assumed to work with a camera or alarm ecosystem unless its manufacturer confirms it. Adding a generic presence sensor is not a diagnosis or repair for a camera with a blocked or failed video stream.
