“The Ring network” can mean two different things during setup: the temporary Ring- or Ring Setup Wi-Fi access point, or your home Wi-Fi network. Joining the temporary network and getting the Ring device online are separate steps, so first note which one is missing or rejecting the connection. Then check power and setup mode, phone distance, Wi-Fi band and password, and router compatibility—in that order.
Identify which network is failing
Ring’s setup network is a temporary Wi-Fi access point that appears when a device is in setup mode. Ring describes it as “a wifi access point that appears when your device is in setup mode.” After joining it, the app asks you to choose your household Wi-Fi network and enter its password. If setup stops at either point, the likely causes differ. Ring’s setup troubleshooting guide explains the process.

- Your phone cannot find or join a network beginning with “Ring-” or “Ring Setup”: check that the Ring device is powered and in setup mode.
- The app cannot find your home Wi-Fi: check distance from the router and whether the device supports the network’s band.
- Your home network appears, but its password is rejected or it is marked incompatible: distinguish a password problem from a router security compatibility issue.
- The device selects Wi-Fi but does not finish setup or later goes offline: check internet access, router configuration and the device’s connection status.
Prepare the phone and Ring device
Before changing router settings, make sure the phone and device are ready for setup:
- Update the Ring app and the phone’s software.
- Have the correct home Wi-Fi password available.
- Keep the phone close to the Ring device throughout setup.
- Turn off any VPN on the phone while troubleshooting.
- Set up only one Ring device at a time.
Check that the Ring device has power. For a battery-powered model, confirm the battery is charged and the device turns on. For a wired or plug-in model, verify that its power source meets the requirements for that model. Look up the model’s setup light pattern in Ring’s instructions; patterns and reset procedures vary by device.
#1 Best Overall
- Extend smart light coverage range — Keep your Ring smart lights connected to Amazon Sidewalk, even if they’re outside the range of your home wifi.
- Control in the Ring app — Use Ring Bridge to easily connect your Ring smart lights to the Ring app. When synced, Ring smart lights and accessories work better together by turning on when your cameras or doorbell detect motion and more.
- Connect with Alexa — Ring Bridge helps connect your Ring smart lights to select Alexa-enabled devices so you can turn on the lights, adjust brightness, and more with just your voice — or know when other Ring devices detect motion.
If your phone cannot join the temporary Ring network
- Confirm that the device is powered on and in setup mode. Check its model-specific setup light rather than assuming that one light pattern applies to every Ring product.
- When prompted by the app, follow the phone’s connection flow. On iOS, the app may ask you to join the temporary network; on Android, the phone may connect automatically.
- If the app does not connect, open the phone’s Wi-Fi settings and select the network whose name begins with “Ring-” or “Ring Setup.” Return to the Ring app afterward.
- If the network still does not appear or the connection fails, try another phone or mobile device. Then power-cycle the Ring device, or reset it using the instructions for its exact model.
Do not use a reset sequence from another Ring model: the correct controls and steps are device-specific.
If Ring cannot find your home Wi-Fi
Move the Ring device closer to the router during setup and confirm that the phone itself can connect to the same home network. If the router exposes separate Wi-Fi bands, check whether the Ring model supports the band you are trying to use. Some Ring devices support only 2.4 GHz; if 5 GHz is missing from the list or unsupported by the model, try the 2.4 GHz network. Check the exact model’s requirements before changing network settings.

If the home network appears only when the device is near the router, or the connection is weak where the device will be installed, coverage may be the problem. Ring suggests an extender such as Chime Pro or a mesh router such as eero for weak coverage. These are optional coverage solutions, not universal fixes: first establish that signal reach is the issue. An extender may suit a limited weak area; a mesh system may be relevant when coverage is poor across multiple parts of the home. Consider placement, compatibility with your existing router, the area affected and cost before buying anything.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitches2Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problems3Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minuteIf the Wi-Fi password is rejected
First verify the password by testing it on the phone. If necessary, forget the home network in the phone’s Wi-Fi settings and reconnect using the same password. If the phone also cannot connect, Ring advises contacting the internet provider. A password rejection is different from a message that the network is incompatible.

- DEAD ZONES, ELIMINATED: Bring WiFi 5 to the rooms your router cannot reach - bedrooms, garage, basement, and backyard - with up to 1,500 sq. ft. of added coverage for up to 25 devices, from any wall outlet
- EASY SET UP: Use the NETGEAR Nighthawk app for guided setup, or press WPS on your router and the extender
- STREAM AND BROWSE WITHOUT BUFFERING: Keep HD video, calls, and everyday devices smooth where signal was weak, with up to 1.2 Gbps (AC1200) across two bands. Real-world speeds vary depending on connected devices and internet plan
- WORKS WITH THE ROUTER YOU ALREADY HAVE: Connects to any router or gateway from Xfinity, Spectrum, AT&T, Cox, or Verizon and rebroadcasts its signal. It extends your router, it does not replace it
- SECURE AND READY TO GO: WPA2 security protects every device on your extended network, with automatic firmware updates to help keep it protected. Compatible with WPA2 or WPA/WEP routers. FCC Certified for use in the United States
Ring recommends WPA2 in its setup guidance and notes WPA3 incompatibility for certain listed devices. Compatibility depends on the Ring model, so check its instructions before changing the router’s security mode.
If Ring says the network is incompatible
An “incompatible network” warning points to an encryption or router security compatibility problem, rather than simply weak signal. For the devices covered by Ring’s guidance, the suggested router setting is WPA2-Personal; if the router has PMF (Protected Management Frames), Ring also advises disabling it. These settings are not appropriate to apply blindly to every Ring model or router. Confirm the guidance for your device, and contact your internet provider or router manufacturer if you are unsure how to make the change.

- Better extend wireless signals
- 2 high-gain antennas maximize your network quality
- Complies with FCC and IEEE802.11b/g/n standards
- Setup can also be completed within 3 minutes via your mobile device’s web browser
- Offers dedicated technical support for all your needs
If setup selects Wi-Fi but cannot reach the internet
Connect a phone to the same Wi-Fi network and test whether it can access the internet. If it cannot, resolve the home internet connection first. If it can, review the router or firewall settings that may prevent the Ring device from completing setup.

Ring also says that using multiple Wi-Fi routers can cause connection problems. If your network has more than one router, try using one router or ask your provider or router manufacturer whether bridge mode is appropriate for your configuration. See Ring’s setup guidance before making advanced changes.

If a Ring device that worked before is now offline
A device that was already set up has a different problem from one that cannot join the temporary setup network. In the Ring app, open the affected device’s settings and select Device Health. Use Reconnect or Change Network to restore its Wi-Fi connection. Ring’s offline-device guide covers these steps.
- Check that the device has power and that its Wi-Fi signal is adequate.
- Restart the modem and router, then check the device again in Device Health.
- If needed, try a guest network or another 2.4 GHz network that the model supports.
- Use a factory reset only as a later step: you will need to set up the device again afterward.
When to contact your provider or check model-specific instructions
Contact your internet provider if the phone cannot reconnect to the home Wi-Fi with the password, or if the home connection itself is unavailable. Ask the provider or router manufacturer for help with security, PMF, firewall, bridge-mode or multi-router settings you cannot safely identify. For setup lights, band support, reset procedures and model-specific compatibility, use the instructions for the exact Ring device; those details are not universal.
