A game can average 100 FPS and still stutter because average FPS measures throughput, not how evenly frames arrive. A few long frames can cause visible hitches while barely changing the average. Check frame-time behavior and slow-frame metrics in the scene where the problem occurs before changing settings or buying hardware.
Why 100 FPS can still look uneven
At 100 FPS, the average frame interval is about 10 milliseconds, but that does not mean every frame takes 10 milliseconds to render. A run of quick frames can offset occasional slow ones in the average. Those longer intervals are what you may see as a hitch, even when the headline FPS number remains high.

Smoothness depends in part on frame-time consistency: whether frames arrive at a steady pace. Average FPS summarizes overall throughput; it does not show when slow frames occurred or how severe they were. A frame-time graph and a slow-frame statistic can reveal patterns that the average conceals.
What to measure alongside average FPS
Frame-time graph
Look at frame time over the interval when the stutter happens. An occasional sharp spike suggests a different pattern from persistently uneven frame delivery. AMD’s Game Advisor reports average frame rate, 95th-percentile frame time, and a frame-time graph, giving you more context than one average alone: AMD Game Advisor documentation.

1% Low and percentile frame time
A 1% Low summarizes the slowest one percent of frames; it is not the same statistic as average FPS. NVIDIA’s FrameView 1.4 User Guide says the metric “Reports stutter—the closer 1% Low is to Avg FPS, the more consistent the experience will be.” Read it as an indicator of slow-frame behavior, not as a diagnosis of the cause: NVIDIA FrameView 1.4 User Guide.
Percentile frame time, such as the 95th percentile reported by Game Advisor, describes another part of the frame-time distribution. It is not interchangeable with 1% Low. Check the tool’s definition before comparing results from different overlays or reports.

- AMD FreeSync reduces choppiness, screen lag and image tearing, ensuring that your fast-paced, complex in-game action is stable with minimal stutter
- Ergonomic stand allows for tilt, pivot and height adjustments to maximize gaming comfort
Latency, if responsiveness is also a problem
Input latency concerns the path from an input through the system to the resulting frame. It can affect responsiveness, but a latency number alone does not explain every visible hitch. NVIDIA’s FrameView documentation describes PC latency measurement and its scope: FrameView 1.4 User Guide.
A repeatable way to diagnose the hitch
- Choose a reproducible scene or action. Use the same route, encounter, or in-game activity each time. Note when the hitch occurs rather than relying on a single session-wide average.
- Record multiple measures during that interval. Capture average FPS plus a frame-time graph and a slow-frame measure such as 1% Low or percentile frame time. These describe performance patterns; none identifies the cause by itself.
- Change one plausible setting at a time. If the report points toward a rendering workload, test one adjustment—such as the graphics preset, an advanced rendering option, render scale, or resolution—then repeat the same scene. Game Advisor can provide recommendations based on its report and generate an updated report after changes: AMD Game Advisor documentation.
- Compare the before-and-after pattern. Check whether the hitch and frame-time spikes improve, not just whether the average FPS rises. If there is no repeatable improvement, restore the setting and test a different hypothesis.
- Investigate the pattern before replacing parts. Consider the game’s shader-compilation behavior, interruptions in data flow, memory pressure, frame caps, and synchronization configuration as possible avenues, guided by what the measurements show.
Possible causes—and why one number cannot identify them
Shader compilation
Compiling shaders can cause stutter in some games. If hitches cluster around newly encountered effects or areas, that pattern may be worth investigating, but it does not prove shader compilation is the cause. NVIDIA discusses shader compilation as a common stutter source in its guidance: NVIDIA GeForce discussion of shader compilation.

Game-data access and memory pressure
Interruptions in the flow of game data involving storage, system RAM, or video memory can also be relevant. A frame-time spike does not tell you which resource, if any, is responsible. NVIDIA’s stutter guidance discusses data-flow interruptions and these resources: NVIDIA GeForce discussion of stutter.
Frame caps, synchronization, and display behavior
A frame cap or synchronization setting can affect how frames are presented. NVIDIA describes VSync-related stutter around refresh-rate caps and Adaptive VSync behavior in its own GPU and display context: NVIDIA Adaptive VSync overview. Treat that as a context-specific lead, not a universal explanation; the relevant behavior depends on the game, GPU, display, and settings.

What a study on stutter can—and cannot—tell you
A 2026 NVIDIA Research study with 21 participants used a custom FPS game and induced frame-time spikes of 0, 225, or 675 milliseconds. It reported that spikes primarily reduced perceived smoothness, while graphics quality primarily affected perceived visual quality: NVIDIA Research study. The specific spike sizes and results describe that study’s setup; they are not a universal threshold for when a game will look choppy.

Stuttering at a high average FPS does not, on its own, establish that you need more RAM, faster storage, a new GPU, or a different monitor. The same symptom can arise from different causes, and the game, system configuration, display behavior, drivers, and settings all matter. Identify a repeatable pattern and the likely constraint first; then decide whether a setting change, configuration fix, or hardware change is justified.
