Reverse-engineered game projects can produce very different things: readable source code, a native port, a browser build, or documentation of how a game behaves. Those labels matter when deciding whether a project is playable, what copy of a game it needs, and how much of its advertised feature set is confirmed.
What “decomp” and “recomp” mean
A decompilation reconstructs human-readable source code from a compiled game binary. A static recompilation translates the original binary code into C or C++ and compiles it to run natively on another platform. The terms describe different technical steps, not interchangeable names for any fan-made port.
A project may use decompilation or recompilation work to make a port, while a source port or a from-scratch remake is a separate kind of project. Catalogs such as Unricopie and Decomp Games separate these categories rather than treating every recreation as a decomp.
Reverse-engineering can also document a game’s behavior without producing clean, recompilable source. A project’s methods and current state are more informative than the broad “decomp” label alone.

How to tell whether a project is ready to play
Completion percentages, technical demonstrations, and public releases answer different questions. A codebase may be substantially decompiled while the port is unfinished; a build may boot but lack features; and an announced feature may not have been tested. Look for a dated release or download, the exact supported game edition, known issues, and evidence that the features you care about have been exercised.
- Announcement: a project or feature has been described, but there may be no public build.
- Demonstration or preview: some functionality is shown, but that does not establish a complete release.
- Public release: a build is available, but compatibility and feature completeness still need to be checked.
- Technical completion: a decompilation or reverse-engineering milestone does not by itself prove that a polished, playable port exists.
For example, the Spyro progress percentages reported in June 2026 were paired with an unfinished, artifacting demonstration that was not yet public at the time. In the Halo browser report, the advertised 128-player capacity was explicitly untested. Treat those claims according to their dated status, not as guarantees about a later build.

Check platform, game edition, and legal files before installing
Read the project’s own requirements before downloading or copying files. “Halo: Combat Evolved” can refer to different releases: HaloCEVR specifically targets the original 2003 PC edition, not The Master Chief Collection, and asks for the original installation CD, product key, and patch 1.0.10. A browser build has different access and input requirements from a VR conversion.
Some catalogs list project source code rather than ROMs or copyrighted game assets and expect users to provide their own legal game copy. That does not establish rights-holder authorization for a catalog entry or fan build. Check the project’s asset policy and your local law; do not assume that a playable web page means the underlying game files are freely distributable.

What “3D port” can mean—and what is established here
“3D port” is ambiguous: it might mean a port of a game that already uses 3D graphics, a conversion into a 3D presentation, or a VR adaptation. These are not one technical category. HaloCEVR is specifically a VR conversion with tracked controls; the examples above do not establish a representative launch list for a separate category of 3D ports. Evaluate any project by its target game edition, rendering and input changes, and release status rather than assuming the label describes a standard method.
Questions worth asking about any game recompile
- Method: Is this a decompilation, static recompilation, source port, behavioral reconstruction, or remake?
- Target: Which platform and exact game edition does it support? Does it need original game files, a disc, a key, or a specific patch?
- Readiness: Is there a public release, or only an announcement or preview? When was compatibility last documented?
- Fidelity and enhancements: Are frame rate, resolution, widescreen, multiplayer, input, or modding features demonstrated, claimed, or confirmed?
- Project practices: Is the source available? What license applies to the project’s own code? How are testing, documentation, assets, and AI-assisted code handled?
These checks help distinguish a useful, playable release from an interesting engineering milestone. Status can change quickly, so use dated project documentation and release notes for the final word on a specific build.
