In a 20-year study of 12 harvested forest sites in British Columbia, plots where the forest floor remained intact retained more soil carbon than plots where organic material was removed. The findings point to forest-floor protection and leaving harvest residue as useful ways to limit carbon losses in the study’s settings—not as a universal forecast for every forest.
What the forest floor is—and what lies beneath it
The forest floor is the layer of organic material above mineral soil: fallen leaves, needles, small branches and other decomposing plant matter. Mineral soil is the underlying layer made largely of weathered rock particles mixed with organic matter. The two layers store carbon, but they are distinct parts of the soil system; a change in one does not automatically mean the same change in the other.

What the British Columbia experiment compared
Brian M. Wallace and co-authors analyzed the British Columbia Long-Term Soil Productivity (BC-LTSP) experiment at 12 forest sites across four biogeoclimatic zones. The report describes nine plots testing combinations of soil compaction and organic-matter removal. Samples were collected before harvest and again five, 10 and 20 years afterward. The findings are reported in the 2026 paper “Forest Floor Protection: The Critical Defense Against Post‐Harvest Soil Carbon Loss” in Journal of Geophysical Research: Biogeosciences.
Stem-only versus whole-tree harvesting
In stem-only harvesting, tree trunks are removed while canopy residue is left at the site. Whole-tree harvesting also removes that residue. The report says stem-only harvesting preserved about 15% more forest-floor carbon than whole-tree harvesting in this experiment. That comparison concerns residue removal; it is not the same as the separate, more intensive treatment that removed the forest floor itself.

Removing organic material from the soil surface
The experiment also included plots where harvest residue and the forest floor were removed, alongside treatments involving soil compaction. This more intensive removal provides a contrast with plots where the forest floor stayed intact. The report does not provide enough detail to treat the reported outcomes as the isolated effect of every individual treatment or to infer results for untested combinations.
How carbon changed under the different treatments
Where the forest floor remained intact
After 20 years, forest-floor carbon in plots where the layer remained intact had declined by 5%, while carbon in the mineral soil beneath it had increased by 14%. These are separate layer-specific changes reported for the BC-LTSP plots; they should not be read as a single whole-profile percentage.

Where residue and the forest floor were removed
In the treatment that removed both harvest residue and the forest floor, total soil carbon fell 52% within five years. Twenty years after harvest, it remained 33% below its preharvest level. The contrast shows why protecting the organic layer matters in these sites, but the figures are not estimates for all logging or all forest soils.
What the 22–86-year recovery estimate means
For sites where the forest floor was fully removed, the report estimates that soil carbon recovery could take 22 to 86 years. This is a modeled or estimated recovery range reported for those sites, not a period directly observed by following the plots until they returned to baseline: the analysis reports measurements through year 20. It is not a universal timetable, and the range should not be applied to sites with different soils, climate, vegetation or disturbance histories.

- Comprehensive Soil Analysis: Liquid soil test kits offer a comprehensive analysis of essential soil parameters, including pH, ammonia, nitrogen, phosphorus, and potassium. Having all these measurements in one kit provides a holistic understanding of the soil's fertility and health.
- Customized Fertilizer Recommendations: With data on pH and nutrient levels, liquid soil test kits help users apply the right type and amount of fertilizers, optimizing plant growth, and preventing over-fertilization, which could harm both plants and the environment. Whether its for lawns, garden, grass, plants, vegetables, turf, flowers, compost trees vines ornamental landscape house plants or hydroponics you will be able to get the results you want.
- Time and Cost-Effective: Liquid soil test kits are relatively quick and easy to use, saving time for gardeners and agricultural professionals. Compared to sending samples to a laboratory, these kits provide rapid results, allowing for prompt action. Additionally, they are cost-effective for routine testing, making it feasible to monitor soil health regularly.
- Optimal Plant Health and Yield: By knowing the soil's pH and nutrient levels, gardeners and farmers can fine-tune their agricultural practices to create an environment conducive to optimal plant growth. Adequate levels of ammonia, nitrogen, phosphorus, and potassium are essential for healthy plant development and higher crop yields.
- Accurate and Precise Results: Liquid test kits are designed to provide accurate and precise measurements when used correctly. They are calibrated to detect specific nutrient levels, ensuring reliable data for informed decision-making in plant nutrition and soil management. You get a total of about 140 test. which is 40 test for each parameter and about 20 or so for nitrogen
Why the findings are specific to British Columbia
The study covers 12 BC-LTSP sites across four biogeoclimatic zones, which provides long-term evidence across several settings in British Columbia. It does not establish a global average or predict what will happen in every forest. The report notes that tree type, climate, harvesting method and other disturbances—including fires, insects and disease—can affect soil-carbon estimates. It also does not settle tradeoffs involving timber yield, economics, wildfire risk or biodiversity.
The report gives broad contextual estimates that forest soils hold about 40% of terrestrial carbon worldwide and that harvesting may result in losses of roughly 15–30% of soil carbon. Those are background estimates cited by the report, not results measured by the BC-LTSP analysis.

The practical implication supported by this experiment is specific: retaining organic residue and avoiding heavy disturbance to the forest floor can help preserve soil carbon after harvest in the studied British Columbia settings. The reported findings do not establish the best harvesting approach for every forest or account for every management objective.
