For a reusable coffee cup, prioritize a smooth, easy-to-clean surface, clear food-contact suitability, and care instructions that match how you will use it. The German Federal Institute for Risk Assessment (BfR) identifies porcelain, stainless steel, glass, and rigid, temperature-stable plastics as suitable material categories when products meet the requirements for their intended or reasonably foreseeable use. No material name alone guarantees that a particular cup is suitable.
Which reusable coffee cup materials are suitable?
BfR’s guidance is conditional: the cup should have a smooth surface that is easy to clean, and it must comply with applicable requirements for its intended or foreseeable use. That is guidance about material categories, not a certification of every product made from them.

| Material | What the guidance says | What to weigh when choosing |
|---|---|---|
| Stainless steel | BfR lists it as suitable when the surface is smooth and easy to clean and the cup complies for its intended or foreseeable use. BfR | Check weight, insulation, interior finish, lid design, and whether all parts can be cleaned as directed. |
| Glass | BfR lists it as suitable under the same conditions. BfR | Consider breakage risk, weight, insulation, grip or sleeve, and lid construction. |
| Porcelain | BfR lists it as suitable under the same conditions. BfR | Consider fragility, weight, intended setting, and practicality for travel. |
| Rigid, temperature-stable plastic | BfR lists this category as suitable when applicable requirements are met. BfR | Check the exact material, temperature limits, and care instructions. A “BPA-free” or “natural” claim by itself does not establish suitability. |
| Melamine-formaldehyde resin, including some bamboo-filled products | BfR warns that hot liquids or high heat can cause melamine and formaldehyde to migrate into food. It advises against hot acidic drinks such as coffee or tea in these cups. BfR | Do not use for hot coffee or tea. Check what “bamboo” describes in the product’s actual composition. |
Why “bamboo” is not enough to judge a cup
“Bamboo” may describe an added fibre rather than the cup’s main material. BfR reports that some products marketed as cups made from natural materials were plastics, including melamine-formaldehyde resin, filled with bamboo fibres. It says bamboo fibres and rice husks are not authorised as fillers in plastic food-contact items. For a bamboo-branded cup, look for the full material description rather than relying on the front-of-package label.
How to compare cups before buying
Start with how you will use the cup, then check the product details that affect safe, practical use:

- Drink temperature: Confirm that the cup is intended for the temperatures you expect, particularly if you want to carry hot coffee.
- Whole-cup construction: Check the body, lid, seals, and any other parts that contact the drink. A material claim about the body does not describe every component.
- Cleaning: Look for a smooth, accessible interior and lid parts that you can clean and dry as directed.
- Appliance limits: Check the manufacturer’s instructions before putting the cup in a dishwasher or microwave; suitability varies by product.
- Portability: Compare weight, capacity, insulation needs, and tolerance for drops or breakage.
- Condition over time: Do not keep using a cup whose surface is no longer smooth or has hairline cracks or visible wear, as BfR advises.
These are comparison criteria, not test results for particular products. No individual cup can be called safest, leakproof, or dishwasher-proof without evidence for that specific item.
What food-contact safety rules mean
A cup is a food-contact material because it is intended, already used, or reasonably expected to come into contact with food or drink. Some constituents can transfer from the material into food; the European Food Safety Authority describes migration and toxicological data as part of its scientific evaluations. EFSA’s food-contact materials overview explains this general context.

In the EU, food-contact materials are expected to be sufficiently inert so they do not adversely affect health or food quality. Businesses placing them on the market are responsible for safety testing, while Member State authorities carry out official controls, according to the European Commission’s food-contact materials information.
EU Regulation 10/2011 sets specific requirements for covered plastic materials and articles intended or reasonably expected to contact food. It includes migration limits and provisions for repeated-use plastic articles. It is not a single material-specific rule for every part of every cup. Read the consolidated regulation on EUR-Lex.

The European Commission announced a ban on bisphenol A (BPA) in food-contact materials on 19 December 2024, with an 18-month phase-out for most products and limited exceptions. That announcement concerns a particular EU regulatory transition and scope; it should not be treated as a universal rule for every jurisdiction or as a determination about a particular cup. BfR recommends regularly washing reusable cups with hot water and washing-up liquid. Use a dishwasher only if the manufacturer says the cup is dishwasher-suitable. Dry it thoroughly or leave it to dry completely, and clean a visibly dirty cup before refilling it. These are BfR recommendations in its German context; follow local requirements and the instructions for your cup.

When taking a personal cup to a café, BfR advises customers to remove their own lid before staff fill it, so staff do not need to handle the lid. Acceptance policies vary by business and location.
