It can bring financial or sporting penalties for the club, and regulators may investigate whether sponsorship income was genuine and accurately reported. Whether a sponsor can end or change its own agreement depends on the contract and applicable law.
Two separate questions determine what happens next
A regulatory decision and a sponsorship contract operate on different tracks. The league or governing body applies its rules to the club; the sponsor and club remain bound by their private agreement unless its terms or applicable law provide a remedy.

- Regulatory consequences: The relevant competition authority may impose sanctions allowed by its rules, following its disciplinary process.
- Contract consequences: A sponsor’s right to terminate, suspend payments, or seek another remedy depends on the actual contract, the facts, and the governing law. There is no universal sponsor right to exit simply because a club is found guilty.
The regulatory materials discussed here do not disclose the private terms of Manchester City’s or other clubs’ sponsorship agreements, so they cannot establish what a particular sponsor can do.
What the 2026 Premier League Manchester City decision says
In a statement dated 29 September 2026, the Premier League said an independent commission found Manchester City guilty of all charges concerning serious financial-rule breaches over a nine-season period and most charges concerning failure to cooperate. The league reported that the commission found the club arranged or relied on “sham” commercial agreements with partners, including sponsors, as part of a disguised funding arrangement: sponsors paid only part of stated fees, while the club’s owner funded the rest. The league said the schemes were intended to inflate reported revenue and reduce reported costs by more than £900 million over the affected period. That figure describes the accounting impact attributed to the schemes in the commission’s findings, as reported by the Premier League; it is not a measure of sponsor losses. The finding does not decide what happens to any sponsorship contract. The Premier League said a further hearing would address the sanction and noted City’s right to appeal the findings. The league identified fines, points deductions, and other sporting sanctions among the possible measures; it had not announced the sanction in that proceeding in its 29 September statement. How regulatory sanctions can affect a sponsor relationship
Financial measures affect the club, not automatically the contract
A fine or withheld revenue can put pressure on a club’s finances, but it does not by itself rewrite the terms of a private sponsorship agreement. Under UEFA’s 2026 regulations, exceeding the squad-cost limit can trigger a financial disciplinary measure. Sporting measures may change the value of a deal
A points deduction or exclusion from a competition could affect a club’s profile, exposure, or performance—factors a sponsor may care about. UEFA’s Club Financial Control Body handles matters concerning eligibility for UEFA competitions, and UEFA’s listed measures include competition exclusion and other sporting sanctions. But the sporting consequence alone does not establish a contractual exit right; that still turns on the agreement and applicable law. The sponsorship transaction itself may be examined
When a questioned sponsorship deal is part of the alleged breach, the regulator may scrutinize who actually funded it and whether the amount reported matched the real arrangement. That is distinct from concluding that every sponsor was complicit: the Premier League’s account of the City findings concerns the arrangements and funding described by the commission, not a blanket finding about all club partners. A sponsor considering its options would need to review the signed agreement rather than rely on a headline about a club’s punishment. Relevant terms may address termination, reputational harm, misrepresentation, compliance obligations, or specific sporting and regulatory events. The applicable law and the facts—including whether the particular deal was implicated—also matter.
