To add a Google Wifi point to a network you already use, open the Google Home app and tap Add > Device. Scan the point’s QR code—or enter its setup code—then follow the on-screen steps until Google Home confirms the connection. Place the new point in the open, roughly one to two rooms from another point as a starting location.
Check compatibility and requirements first
Google Wifi is a mesh system, not a universal Wi-Fi repeater. It can mesh with Google Wifi and compatible Nest Wifi hardware, but Nest Wifi Pro cannot be combined with Google Wifi or Wi-Fi 5 Nest Wifi units. If your goal is to extend a network from an unrelated router, a Google Wifi point will not join that router as a generic extender; it creates a mesh with compatible Google or Nest devices. See Google’s overview of Google Wifi and its Google Wifi setup instructions for compatibility details.

- An internet-connected modem and service.
- A Google Account and the latest Google Home app.
- A mobile device running Android 9.0 or later, or iOS 17.0 or later.
- The additional point and its QR code or printed setup code.
A point that was configured on another network may need a factory reset before it can be added to yours. Avoid resetting it unless required: a reset erases the device’s settings.

Choose a location for the new point
Start with an open spot about one to two rooms from another Google Wifi point, following Google’s general placement guidance. The right position depends on the home’s size and layout, wall materials, point locations, and internet service; the suggested distance is not a guarantee of a strong connection. Google also advises that using more than five points may degrade performance and is not recommended. These are general support recommendations, not a performance measurement for a particular home.
#1 Best Overall
- Google Wifi is a scalable, flexible mesh Wifi system that blankets your home in reliable coverage and keeps buffering at bay; 1 Google Wifi point replaces your router and additional points expand your network to keep the connection fast in every room[1]
- Google Wifi gives you whole home coverage[1]; 1 Pack covers up to 1500 square feet and 3 Pack covers up to 4500 square feet; points work together to create a mesh network for more coverage
- Intelligently works behind the scenes to make sure your Wifi remains fast, so you can stream with speed[1]
- Simple setup in a few steps; use the Google Home app to create your network and get online in minutes[2]
- Parental controls let you manage screen time, restrict certain kinds of adult content, and pause Wifi to specific devices on your mesh network whenever you want
Add the point in Google Home
- Plug in the additional Google Wifi point at the location you chose and wait for it to be ready for setup.
- Open Google Home and tap Add > Device. If a setup card appears for the point, select Set up or Next for that device.
- Scan the QR code on the point. If the camera cannot scan it, choose Use setup code and enter the code printed on the device. If those options are unavailable, choose Add a different way and search for the device.
- Wait for the app to show Connected, then complete the remaining prompts. After the points are added, Google Home runs a mesh test.
These steps are for adding a point to an existing network. If you are building a network from scratch, the main Google Wifi point connects to the modem with Ethernet first; an additional point can connect wirelessly or by Ethernet where supported.

- Restart the point and check its connection. Unplug and reconnect its power. If the setup uses Ethernet, check that cable as well. Google Wifi points have Ethernet ports; Nest Wifi points do not.
- Join the setup Wi-Fi if needed. Connect the phone to the setup Wi-Fi name printed on the device sticker, using the setup code as the password, then return to Google Home.
