Many retail sales jobs are open to applicants without previous retail experience, and most new workers learn the job after they are hired. The work can still involve frequent customer interaction, long periods standing, variable hours, and store-specific requirements—so check the posting and schedule before you apply.
What beginner retail jobs involve
Retail is a broad group of jobs, not one standard role. A retail sales worker may greet customers, find out what they need, recommend products, explain features or promotions, answer questions, demonstrate merchandise, process payments, or explain exchange policies. The job may also include stocking shelves, arranging deliveries, tracking inventory, and keeping the sales floor organized. The mix depends on the store and the merchandise. The U.S. Bureau of Labor Statistics (BLS) describes these duties in its Retail Sales Workers Occupational Outlook Handbook.

Common titles include sales associate, sales clerk, salesperson, and sales consultant, but a title alone does not define the daily tasks. O*NET lists these among reported titles for retail salespersons; actual duties vary by employer. Checkout work may be part of a sales job, although cashier is a separate occupational classification. Some specialty sales jobs, such as selling cars or car parts, require more product knowledge than a general store role.

Usually, no formal education is required for retail or parts sales positions, though some employers prefer a high school diploma or equivalent. Prior retail experience is not a universal requirement. In the BLS Occupational Requirements Survey’s 2025 estimates for retail salespersons, 67.3% of jobs had no minimum education requirement, 31.5% required a high school diploma, and 17.1% required prior work experience. These are occupation-wide estimates, not rules for a particular vacancy; follow the requirements in each posting. The BLS reports that 98.3% of surveyed retail salesperson jobs required on-the-job training (BLS Occupational Requirements Survey).

“Most retail sales workers learn on the job,” the BLS says. Training commonly covers customer service, store policies and procedures, security, and use of a cash register or point-of-sale system. It can last from a few days to a few months; specialty product roles may include additional training (BLS Occupational Outlook Handbook).
How to get your first retail job
- Choose roles that fit your interests and circumstances. Read postings for entry-level sales, sales associate, or cashier openings, and look beyond the title to the listed duties. Note whether the work centers on customer help, checkout, stocking, or a combination.
- Check the requirements and practical details. Compare experience or credentials, weekly hours, shift times, physical tasks, pay and any stated commission structure, training, location, and advancement options. Do not assume a job includes commission or benefits unless the posting says so.
- Show relevant examples on your resume. If you have not worked in retail, use honest examples from school, volunteering, clubs, caregiving, or other work. Choose examples that demonstrate helping someone solve a problem, explaining choices, handling numbers carefully, following through, or staying composed in a busy interaction.
- Give accurate availability and prepare for the interview. Be clear about the days and hours you can work. Prepare a brief example of how you communicated with someone, handled a responsibility, or worked through a problem; connect it to the duties in the posting.
- Ask focused questions before accepting. Confirm the expected shift pattern and weekly hours, weekend or seasonal expectations, main physical tasks, training provided, and how pay is structured. For a specialty role that may require a license, check your state licensing agency for the rules that apply.
Customer service, interpersonal skills, basic math, persistence, and persuasion can all be useful. You do not need to claim a particular personality type: show specific, truthful examples of how you communicate, help, and follow through.
Schedules and working conditions to consider
Retail sales workers spend much of their time interacting with customers and often stand for long periods. Shifts may include evenings and weekends, and some workers take additional or part-time shifts during holidays and other busy periods. In the BLS’s 2025 Occupational Requirements Survey, 70.9% of retail salesperson jobs had variable work schedules (BLS Occupational Requirements Survey). Ask what “flexible” or “variable” means for the specific store, and consider your commute and availability when comparing offers.

The BLS reported a U.S. median wage of $17.03 per hour for retail salespersons in May 2025. This is the median across the occupation, not a promised starting wage; actual offers vary by location and job. The broader retail sales workers group includes parts salespersons, whose separate May 2025 median was $18.57 per hour. Do not treat the parts-sales figure as the retail salesperson rate (BLS Occupational Outlook Handbook).
Rank #3
For 2025–2035, the BLS projects 0% employment change for retail salespersons. Separately, it projects an average of about 550,600 annual openings across the broader retail sales workers group over that decade, mostly because workers leave or change occupations. Flat projected growth does not mean there are no openings, and the openings estimate does not guarantee an easy search or a job in a particular area (BLS Occupational Outlook Handbook).
Retail sales workers may progress into supervisory or management roles, and experience or seniority can bring more responsibility or a choice of department. Some employers prefer a bachelor’s degree for management positions, but requirements differ; check the posting rather than assuming a degree is always required.

Some states require licenses for selected retail sales occupations, including certain car-sales roles. Conditions vary by state and may include an exam or background check. This is a specialty-role issue, not a general requirement for ordinary store sales jobs. If a posting involves a regulated product or occupation, confirm the rules with your state licensing agency.
