Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problems2Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitches3Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errorsYou can cut back on Facebook and Instagram without deactivating either account. First check how much time you actually spend in each app, then choose a realistic limit, quiet nonessential alerts, and add a phone-level app timer if reminders are too easy to dismiss. Review the results after a week and adjust: less time on these apps does not automatically mean less total screen time.
Start by finding out when and why you open the apps
Before setting a target, check the time reports in Facebook, Instagram, or your phone’s screen-time settings over a few ordinary days. Meta’s 2018 announcement described Instagram’s “Your Activity” and Facebook’s “Your Time on Facebook,” but app menus change; look in the current Settings area for activity, time-management, or screen-time controls rather than relying on those older labels. Meta’s announcement described average and daily time, reminders, and notification controls.

Record more than the total. Note whether you opened an app to reply to a message, post something, check a notification, fill a spare moment, or out of habit. A short, frequent check-in pattern may need a different solution from a long evening scroll. If Facebook or Instagram is part of your work or family communication, distinguish that use from browsing you would like to reduce.

Pick a first limit that is challenging but plausible based on your current use. There is no established universal daily target for adults. You could reduce your typical time in a defined block, or make a specific rule such as not opening the apps during meals or the first hour after waking. A concrete boundary is easier to evaluate than a vague intention to “use them less.”

Meta has described in-app activity dashboards, daily reminders, and notification controls. Treat an app reminder as a prompt, not a lock: if you routinely dismiss it, use an operating-system limit as well. Meta’s own descriptions establish the intended features, not independent proof that they will reduce use for every person.
Reduce the prompts that pull you back in
Turn off nonessential push notifications or schedule quiet periods for work, study, meals, and bedtime. Keep alerts you genuinely rely on, such as messages from specific people or account-security notices, where your settings allow. Fewer prompts can reduce unplanned openings without removing your ability to use either account when you choose.
Meta’s teen-focused materials describe Instagram’s “Take A Break” reminders and Quiet Mode, which turns off notifications and can send automatic replies during a configured overnight period. Feature availability and labels can vary by age, app version, and location; do not assume every adult account has the same controls. Meta’s 2024 teen-safety description also lists daily limits, scheduled breaks, and parental supervision tools for teen accounts.

Add a phone-level limit if in-app reminders are too easy to ignore
Apple Screen Time and Android Digital Wellbeing offer built-in tools such as app limits, downtime, or focus controls, though exact paths and features depend on operating-system version and, for Android, the device maker. Search Settings for “Screen Time” on iPhone or “Digital Wellbeing” on Android, then select Facebook and Instagram and set the limit or schedule that matches your goal. A phone-level tool can add friction across the apps, but built-in limits may still be overridden; they are not foolproof locks. The Associated Press overview discusses these controls and third-party blockers.
Choose the control based on what you need: reminders are least restrictive, app timers add a firmer barrier, and scheduled focus or downtime can protect a particular part of the day. Check whether your setup applies per app or across both platforms, whether messages still come through, and how easy it is to override. If you use multiple devices, a limit on one phone may not cover Facebook or Instagram use elsewhere.
Review the change after a week, including what replaced the apps
After seven days, compare your actual Facebook and Instagram use with your baseline. If the limit is routinely exceeded, decide whether to lower it more gradually, change the hours, remove particular notifications, or add a stronger device control. If you are comfortably below it, keep the boundary or revise it to fit your needs.

Also look at what filled the time. In a 2022 randomized student study, participants assigned to use Facebook, Instagram, and Snapchat for no more than 10 minutes each per day reduced use of those services under the study conditions; the analyzed Android treatment group averaged 8.1 minutes per day during the intervention block. Participants substituted instant messaging, and their total digital activity did not fall. That study does not make 10 minutes a suitable target for everyone. The study authors’ PLOS ONE paper reports the trial.

A 2021 randomized study of 76 participants compared a 50% reduction target with a 10% target for mobile Facebook, Instagram, Snapchat, and YouTube. Because control participants also reduced use, the planned contrast weakened; analyses found no effect on measured outcomes. Participants reported fewer negative emotions, but not more positive emotions, and sustained-attention performance remained stable. The study abstract on PubMed describes the design and findings.
A separate one-week break study involving 132 participants reported a small wellbeing improvement relative to its control group after participants limited Facebook, Instagram, and Snapchat. It is a short-term result, not a guarantee that reducing app time will improve wellbeing, sleep, attention, or mental health for a particular reader. The study abstract reports that finding.

For teens, check which controls apply to their age and location
Teen accounts may have controls that differ from adult accounts, and policies can be geographically limited. A UK government qualitative report on 13–17-year-olds found that restrictions could make use feel scarcer and more deliberate, but could also frustrate young people when limits interrupted communication. Participants and families described substituting messaging, television, gaming, YouTube, or school activity. These observations concern adolescents in that intervention setting, not a universal effect for adults. The UK Department for Science, Innovation and Technology report outlines the qualitative findings.
Meta announced on August 27, 2026, that a judge approved an agreement requiring a default two-hour daily limit cumulative across Facebook and Instagram for under-18s in participating U.S. states and territories, along with a midnight-to-6 a.m. feed-viewing and posting restriction and muted notifications from 8 a.m. to 3 p.m. Direct messages are excluded from the specified Night Mode, Time Limit, and School Mode restrictions. This is a minor- and jurisdiction-specific policy announcement, not a general setting for adults or all countries; check Meta’s update for implementation details. Meta’s August 27, 2026 update describes the agreement.
