Crashes, No Sound, or Screen Glitches?
Random freezes, missing sound and display glitches usually trace back to one bad driver. Find and replace yours safely.Free scan · under a minutePC Slower Than It Used to Be?

The risk is not that a particular phrase has been proven to make people dishonest; it is that accepting unsupported additions can turn an editing request into a misleading application. Use AI only in ways the employer permits, and verify every claim against what you have really done.
Why “make my resume more impressive” can go wrong
That request rewards a stronger-sounding result without defining what must stay true. A tool may recast an ordinary contribution as leadership, turn an estimate into a precise metric, or add skills and outcomes that were never supplied. These are risks to watch for, not evidence that a specific prompt reliably causes people to lie.

The standard is straightforward: your resume should accurately represent your experience, skills, accomplishments, and voice. College Board Careers says, “We encourage you to submit a resume and application that authentically represents your experience, skills, and voice.” It also warns that misrepresenting AI-generated content as your own experience may disqualify you. College Board Careers’ AI guidance explains its position.

Check the employer’s AI rules before using a tool
There is no single policy that applies to every application. Some organizations allow limited editing; others prohibit AI-generated resume text in their application context. Read the current instructions for the specific employer and role, and follow the stricter application-specific rule if it differs from general advice.
#1 Best Overall
| Source and context | Stated approach | What it means for an applicant |
|---|---|---|
| Pfizer’s candidate AI-use guidelines | Allows certain bounded uses, including refining a resume for clarity, provided it remains accurate. | Editing may be acceptable there, but the guidance still requires authenticity and integrity. |
| NIST federal application tips | In its stated federal hiring context, says not to use AI-generated resume text or boilerplate. | Do not treat this NIST-specific instruction as a universal private-employer policy; do follow it when applying under those instructions. |
Harvard’s career guidance recommends using generated text as a suggested edit, checking that it is accurate and authentic, and being prepared to discuss every line. Harvard’s advice on AI tools for resumes and cover letters is useful as an editing safeguard, but it does not override an employer’s rules.
Use AI to edit evidence, not manufacture it
Start from your existing resume and real supporting details: duties, dates, accomplishments, and the job description. Ask for help identifying relevant experience, improving clarity, or suggesting more concise wording. Do not invite the tool to fill gaps with plausible-sounding claims.

A safer prompt to adapt
Review the resume and job description below. Suggest clearer, more concise wording using only facts in my resume and notes. Do not add or infer skills, metrics, duties, titles, credentials, employers, or results. If a job requirement is not supported by my material, identify the gap and ask me a question instead of filling it in. Keep the meaning accurate and the voice natural. Return suggested edits separately from the original.

Provide only information you are comfortable sharing with that service, and remove identifying details before submitting a resume for review. Arizona State University’s career guidance recommends removing identifying information and warns against inaccurate statistics and achievements. ASU’s resume guidance covers these concerns.

Compare each suggested edit with your records and memory. A sentence is not safe just because it sounds professional or fits the job description. Keep it only if you can verify the facts and explain your contribution in an interview.
- Numbers and outcomes: Confirm that every metric is real, correctly attributed, and expressed with the right scope. Do not accept invented percentages, savings, growth, or impact.
- Skills and credentials: Remove tools, certifications, education, or expertise you do not actually have.
- Responsibilities and titles: Check that the wording reflects your actual role and level of ownership. Do not let “supported” quietly become “led” unless you truly led the work.
- Dates, employers, and scope: Verify these against your records, and make sure a polished rewrite has not changed when, where, or how much you did.
- Voice and explainability: Replace language you would not naturally use or cannot comfortably defend with a truthful description you understand.
If a claim cannot be substantiated or explained, remove it or rewrite it to match the evidence you do have. Harvard recommends being able to speak to every resume line; ASU specifically cautions against inaccurate statistics and achievements.
Know the consequences in the application context
For federal applications, USAJOBS warns that inaccurate or fraudulent statements may be grounds for not hiring an applicant or firing them after they are hired. It also says false or fraudulent statements may be punishable by a fine or imprisonment. Those warnings concern the federal application and relevant legal context; they should not be presented as rules that automatically apply to every private employer. Read USAJOBS’ fair-and-transparent hiring information for its stated scope.
