Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errorsFree Scan →Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minuteDriver Scan →Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problemsFix Now →Build time can shape what you think about—not because every slow build inevitably derails a developer, but because a pause invites a choice: stay with the problem or turn to something else. To protect your focus, first measure the loop you actually use and remove avoidable work. When a wait cannot be shortened, give it one deliberate purpose and leave yourself a note that makes it easy to resume the same thought.
Why a build pause can turn into a context switch
A build or test run creates a gap between an action and its result. In that gap, the inbox or chat channel can look like a useful place to spend a moment. But an unrelated task may leave you needing to reconstruct what you were testing, what you expected, and what you planned to do next.

The title is a useful way to think about feedback loops and attention, not a settled causal finding. A 2018 software-development study reported that voluntary self-interruptions can be more disruptive than external interruptions and can negatively affect performance on interrupted tasks. That finding makes it reasonable to be cautious about choosing unrelated work during a wait, but it does not show that build duration itself causes task switching or poorer work.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitches2Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problems3Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minuteA 2021 cognitive task-resumption study associated more complex interruptions with longer resumption lags. This is consistent with the effort of reorienting and retrieving task information after a switch; it does not establish a fixed recovery time for every interruption or developer.

Measure the loop you are really in
“Time the loop you are really in.” That means measuring the save-to-result cycle on your machine, with your current project and workflow, rather than relying on an assumed duration. The essay behind this advice uses “a little over two minutes” for a round trip and imagines thirty waits in a day. Those are illustrative examples from the essay, not measured statistics or a universal estimate.
Once you know where the time goes, look for work that can be omitted or narrowed. These options depend on the project and its tooling; they are practical suggestions, not guarantees of a particular speedup.

- Run the relevant test: when it is appropriate and safe, run the specific test related to the change rather than the entire suite.
- Keep a process alive: if your workflow supports it, avoid restarting a process between attempts.
- Avoid rebuilding unchanged inputs: check whether the workflow can skip work for inputs that have not changed.
Give unavoidable waits one focused purpose
If a wait cannot be shortened, decide what the pause is for before it begins. The essay suggests standing up, looking at something far away, or writing down the current question and the result you expect. The point is not to turn every pause into another productivity task; it is to avoid starting an unrelated one that makes the original problem harder to pick up again.
A useful note can be brief. Record what you changed, what you are trying to learn, and what result would confirm or challenge your expectation. Keep it somewhere visible—a text note, a scratch file, or a notebook can all work. When the run finishes, the note gives you a clear place to resume.

A simple routine for the next build
- Before the run: state the question the build or test should answer and what result you expect.
- Start the run: use the narrowest appropriate test or build path, and avoid unnecessary restarts or work on unchanged inputs where your setup allows.
- While it runs: choose a short, focused pause rather than opening the inbox or chat by reflex.
- When it finishes: compare the actual result with your expectation, then decide the next change while the context is still fresh.
What the evidence does—and does not—say
The available studies support concern about interruptions and the difficulty of resuming complex tasks. They do not establish a causal estimate for how much build duration affects attention or work quality, or a threshold at which developers generally switch tasks. Individual workflows and responses differ. Treat shorter feedback loops and deliberate pauses as sensible practices to try, not as a scientifically proven formula for every developer.
