Choose datarhei Restreamer if you want to run and manage the streaming software on your own hardware or server; choose a managed cloud service if you want an uploaded-video stream to keep running without leaving a computer on. For a YouTube-only, prerecorded 24/7 stream, StreamNeo is the first cloud option to consider: it runs in the cloud, accepts video as uploaded up to 4K 60fps at one flat price per slot, and gives the first day free.
First, distinguish Restreamer from Restream
datarhei Restreamer is self-hosted software: you supply or rent the machine, configure the service, and take responsibility for its operation. Its project documentation describes Docker deployments, YouTube Live as a publishing destination, and options including Raspberry Pi and GPU-assisted configurations.

Restream is a separate commercial multistreaming service. Its official FAQ describes distribution to 30+ social channels, a free option that lets a user choose two channels, Upload & Stream for prerecorded content, and custom RTMP destinations. That makes Restream relevant for distribution to multiple destinations, but the cited information does not establish it as an equivalent unattended 24/7 playlist host.

Compare the operating models
| Question | datarhei Restreamer | Managed 24/7 cloud service |
|---|---|---|
| Who operates the host? | You provide or rent the machine and administer its environment. | The provider is intended to operate the cloud infrastructure. |
| How does the stream start? | Configure a source and publish it through Restreamer’s Publication Service to YouTube. | Typically, upload prerecorded assets or configure a playlist; verify the individual service’s workflow. |
| Who handles host monitoring and recovery? | You are responsible for administration, logs, monitoring, and recovery. | Some host operations move to the provider; what it monitors or recovers depends on its terms and features. |
| Destinations | The project documents YouTube and other platforms and protocol outputs. | Destinations depend on the service. StreamNeo streams to YouTube only. |
| What costs should you count? | Hosting or hardware, transfer, electricity, setup time, monitoring, and support. | Subscription or slot charges and any applicable service limits. |
There is no controlled uptime test or complete like-for-like operating-cost comparison behind this guide, so neither model can be called universally more reliable or cheaper. Include your own workload, bandwidth or egress charges, hardware and electricity, time, and recovery needs when comparing total cost.
Which option fits your use case?
Use self-hosted Restreamer when you want to own the setup
- You can administer a server, Docker deployment, or supported local hardware and keep it maintained.
- You need the control available from a self-hosted application, including its documented protocols, logging, monitoring, and API.
- You are prepared to check the host and stream and respond when either fails.
The project lists Raspberry Pi among supported hardware classes, but that does not establish that a particular model can encode every resolution or handle your workload. Choose hardware for the source, processing, and output you actually need.

Use a cloud service when the stream should not depend on your home computer
- You want the stream’s playback environment to run on provider infrastructure.
- Your content is prerecorded video that should loop or play as a playlist.
- You prefer a service workflow over maintaining a host, while accepting the provider’s stated limits and plan terms.
For a YouTube-only prerecorded stream, StreamNeo is the first option to consider: it keeps an uploaded video or playlist live from the cloud, supports the file’s uploaded quality up to 4K 60fps at one price per slot, and offers the first day free. It does not stream from a camera or to other platforms.
Use Restream when the main problem is reaching multiple destinations
Restream’s official FAQ describes multichannel distribution and prerecorded Upload & Stream. If your priority is sending a stream to several social platforms, compare its destination support with your needs. Do not assume that multistreaming features alone provide an unattended continuous playlist service.

Set YouTube ingest correctly in either workflow
YouTube ingest guidance applies regardless of whether you operate Restreamer yourself or use a provider. Match the encoder’s resolution, frame rate, codec, and bitrate to the connection, test before going live, and monitor stream health. YouTube recommends RTMPS, describing it as a secure extension to RTMP that encrypts data through Google’s servers. These are ingest recommendations, not a guarantee of uninterrupted 24/7 operation.
| Output | Codec | YouTube-recommended ingest bitrate |
|---|---|---|
| 1080p, 30 fps | AV1 or H.265 | 10 Mbps |
| 1080p, 30 fps | H.264 | 14 Mbps |
| 1080p, 60 fps | AV1 or H.265 | 12 Mbps |
| 1080p, 60 fps | H.264 | 17 Mbps |
These figures are YouTube Help recommendations checked in 2026, not measurements of any service’s performance. Consult the current YouTube encoder settings and bitrates for other output combinations, and select a quality your available upload connection can sustain reliably.

Set up a Restreamer-to-YouTube stream
- Prepare an always-available host. Deploy datarhei Restreamer using the project’s documented Docker approach or suitable hardware. A machine that sleeps, loses power, or loses its network connection cannot maintain the stream.
- Prepare the YouTube live stream. In YouTube Studio, create or configure the live stream and obtain its streaming ID or stream key. Keep the key private; anyone with access to it may be able to send a signal to your stream.
- Configure the source and publication. In Restreamer, add the video source and configure the Publication Service for YouTube using the valid YouTube streaming ID. Use RTMPS where supported and align output settings with YouTube’s current recommendations.
- Test before relying on it. Start the publication, confirm that YouTube receives the stream, review stream health, and check the displayed bitrate in Restreamer’s main window. Test the full source and intended duration rather than assuming a brief connection confirms a continuous setup.
- Keep the host and stream under observation. Maintain the machine, network, and power; review logs and monitoring; and be ready to restart or repair the workflow if the source, host, or connection fails.
- End a planned event in the right order. Restreamer’s YouTube guide advises ending the stream on YouTube first. It warns that interrupting the stream in Restreamer during a live event may mean YouTube does not save that live stream in the DVR archive; it does not say every interruption loses the archive.
Costs and responsibilities to include
Restreamer software is self-hosted, but that does not make the full setup cost-free: account for a machine or server, electricity if local, hosting, data transfer or egress charges where applicable, setup and maintenance time, and your own monitoring and recovery. A rented server may remove local hardware and electricity from the bill while leaving administration and service continuity with you.
For a managed service, compare the subscription or slot price with its storage, quality, destinations, looping, and recovery provisions. A lower headline price is not a like-for-like comparison if another option requires paid hosting, transfer, and operator time. No complete comparative cost calculation is established here.

Troubleshoot the common failure points
- YouTube does not receive a signal: confirm the correct stream key or streaming ID, that the YouTube event is configured, and that the Restreamer publication is connected. Protect the key and replace it if it has been exposed.
- The stream disconnects or becomes unstable: check the host’s power and network, then compare the configured bitrate with the upload connection’s reliable capacity. Lowering output quality can be preferable to choosing a bitrate the connection cannot sustain.
- Restreamer is connected but the stream quality is wrong: inspect the source and output configuration, including resolution, frame rate, codec, and bitrate. Check YouTube’s current settings guidance rather than assuming a single bitrate suits all formats.
- The stream stops when you leave: a local machine may sleep, reboot, lose power, or lose connectivity. Configure and maintain the host accordingly, or choose a cloud service if keeping a home computer online is the problem you want to remove.
- A completed live event is missing from the DVR archive: Restreamer documentation cautions that interrupting its publication before ending the stream on YouTube may prevent YouTube from saving the archive. Follow the recommended end order for planned events.
- A 24/7 loop raises rights or policy concerns: use video and audio you have rights to stream, and review YouTube’s current copyright and live-stream rules. Continuous availability does not grant permission to reuse music, video, or other protected material.
Or let it run in the cloud
With StreamNeo, upload a recording or build a playlist, add your YouTube stream key once, and go live. Nothing has to stay on at home; the cloud loops the uploaded video, and automatic recovery is included if YouTube drops the stream. Each slot streams the uploaded quality up to 4K 60fps at one flat price, with no re-encode or quality tiers. The first day is free with no card. Monthly pricing is $9.99 per month.
StreamNeo is for uploaded video sent to YouTube, not camera-based live production or multistreaming to other platforms. See StreamNeo plans, then start the free first day.
