For sensitive accounts, local monitoring is the more conservative documented choice. Distill’s public materials reviewed here do not spell out safeguards specific to saved session data, so they do not support a blanket assurance either way.
What changes between local and cloud monitoring?
The key question is where the page request runs and whether a hosted browser retains your authenticated session.

Distill documents the local execution model as avoiding placement of page-session cookies into its cloud browser. That does not establish that every account, monitor, or alert detail stays on your device. Conversely, cloud session features mean you should treat the saved login state as session material entrusted to a hosted service.

Distill’s official privacy policy describes collecting service usage and log information, including IP addresses and information collected through cookies or similar technologies. It says the company uses technical, organizational, and administrative security measures, and notes that “no company or service can guarantee complete security.”

The reviewed policy does not describe controls specifically for saved monitor-session cookies or Dedicated Cloud Device browser data. It does not state their encryption method, who can access them, a specific retention schedule, or how they are deleted after account closure. Dedicated Cloud Devices provide a Clear Device Data control, but that alone does not establish broader retention or backup behavior. The policy says information may be kept while a customer uses the services and for a period afterward, or as needed for stated purposes and legal obligations.
How to reduce risk when monitoring a logged-in page
- Prefer local monitoring for highly sensitive accounts. Use a local monitor if its browser-based workflow meets your needs, and protect the device and browser. The device must remain available for checks.
- Limit the cloud session’s permissions. If cloud checks are necessary, use the least-privileged account the website allows and consider what personal or confidential information that session can expose.
- Review monitored content and notifications. Check what Distill selects, what appears in change history, and where alerts are sent. Avoid sending sensitive page text to channels or people who do not need it.
- Ask Distill specific questions before storing sensitive sessions in the cloud. Ask about encryption, staff and service-provider access, retention and deletion of saved browser state, backups, and account/session isolation. The reviewed public material does not answer those questions.
- Recheck authentication and results periodically. Saved cookies can expire. Distill also documents access blocks, delayed page content, and monitor configuration problems as causes of failed checks or missed changes.
These steps reduce exposure; they are not guarantees of security.

What if the monitor stops working or misses a change?
A successful initial setup does not mean a monitor will stay authenticated indefinitely. A saved session may expire and require reauthentication or reconfiguration. Access blocks, delayed content, and monitor settings can also prevent checks from working as expected. When results stop, verify the login in the browser or cloud profile used by the monitor, check whether the site is blocking access, and review the selected page content and monitor configuration before relying on alerts again.
