If your Restream YouTube stream is stuck on “Connecting,” check the problem in layers: make sure YouTube live streaming is enabled and the event accepts an external encoder, then test the YouTube destination, Restream authorization, encoder connection, and network. A direct YouTube test and, if needed, reconnecting the channel can quickly show where to focus.
Start by identifying where the connection stops
“Connecting” can describe different failures. Your encoder may not be reaching Restream, Restream may not be authorized to send to the selected YouTube channel, or YouTube may be rejecting the event or channel. Change one thing at a time and retry so you can tell which layer matters.

- YouTube reports that live streaming is unavailable: check channel eligibility and whether live streaming has been enabled.
- YouTube is connected in Restream, but the stream does not appear: check the event type and reconnect the channel if its authorization or stream key may be stale.
- Restream or OBS remains on “Connecting” or times out: check the selected Restream account, encoder connection, and relevant firewall rules.
- The stream starts but is unstable: check bitrate against upload capacity and consider a wired connection.
Check YouTube channel eligibility and event type
YouTube live streaming must be enabled for the channel. Restream’s setup guidance says a channel must be phone-verified and, before streaming for the first time, wait 24 hours after enabling live streaming. If YouTube says live streaming is not enabled, resolve that with YouTube before changing encoder settings.
Also check how the YouTube event was created. An event created through YouTube’s mobile app is for mobile streaming only; attempts to send to that event through Restream can fail. Use an event that accepts an external encoder instead.

Reconnect the YouTube channel and reset its stream key
If the channel was connected previously and its authorization or key may be stale, use Restream’s documented reconnection sequence:
- In Restream, remove the YouTube channel from your connected destinations.
- Open the stream settings in YouTube Studio and reset the stream key.
- Return to Restream and add the YouTube channel again.
- Select the intended destination and retry the stream.
Resetting a key invalidates the old key. If you use a manually configured encoder, update its saved key as well; otherwise it may continue sending with the old credentials.

Test YouTube without Restream
Try a direct YouTube stream without Restream. If that also fails, the issue may be with YouTube, the channel, or the event rather than Restream. If the problem persists after checking eligibility and event setup, Restream advises contacting YouTube support. If the direct test works, return to the Restream channel connection and the encoder-to-Restream path.

Check firewall and network access for your streaming path
Firewall and web security gateway rules can prevent a connection even when the account and event are correct. The required access depends on how you stream, so ask your network administrator to check only the protocol and ports used by your setup.

| Streaming path | Ports identified by Restream |
|---|---|
| Web content or HLS, including WebSockets | TCP 443 |
| RTMP or RTMPS encoder traffic | 1935 |
| SRT | UDP 2010 |
| Restream Studio | UDP 3478 and 3479 |
These are path-specific requirements, not a list of ports every streamer should open. Do not change firewall rules blindly, particularly on a managed or workplace network.
Verify OBS is sending to the intended Restream destination
If you use OBS, confirm the account and stream before changing video settings. Restream supports connecting OBS through account authorization or by entering a Restream RTMP stream key manually. OBS can autodetect the server, or you can choose one.

Match encoder settings to YouTube guidance and your upload speed
Restream lists H.264 video, CBR rate control, and a two-second keyframe interval among its YouTube recommendations. Its guidance gives a maximum keyframe interval of four seconds. These settings cannot fix a disabled YouTube channel, an incompatible mobile-created event, or a wrong key, so check the earlier steps first.

Use Ethernet as a stability check, not a universal fix
Where your streaming computer and router support it, test with Ethernet instead of Wi-Fi. Restream recommends a wired connection for stability. It may help when the local connection is unstable, but it will not correct a YouTube authorization problem, an incompatible event, or an incorrect stream key.
Common symptoms and fixes
| Symptom | Likely area to check | Next action |
|---|---|---|
| YouTube says live streaming is not enabled | Channel eligibility | Enable live streaming, phone-verify if required, and allow the first-time activation wait. |
| A Restream stream fails on an event made in YouTube’s mobile app | Event compatibility | Create or select an event that accepts an external encoder. |
| A previously working YouTube destination stops connecting | Channel authorization or key | Remove the channel in Restream, reset the YouTube key in Studio, and add the channel again. |
| OBS stays on “Connecting” or times out | Account, key, server, or network | Verify the Restream account, destination, key, server selection, and relevant firewall access. |
| A direct YouTube test also fails | YouTube or channel/event setup | Resolve the YouTube-side issue; contact YouTube support if it persists. |
| Video starts but drops or buffers | Upload capacity or local stability | Reduce bitrate or output demands, compare bitrate with upload speed, and test Ethernet. |
Or let it run in the cloud
If your goal is a 24/7 YouTube channel that loops uploaded recordings, StreamNeo is a separate option—not a way to repair a Restream connection or stream a live camera. Upload a recording or build a playlist, add your YouTube stream key once, and go live. StreamNeo loops the uploaded video from the cloud, so your computer and home connection do not have to stay on. It supports any uploaded quality up to 4K 60fps at one flat price per slot, automatically recovers if YouTube drops the stream, and includes a first day free with no card. Monthly pricing is $9.99 per month.
