To start a YouTube channel, sign in with a Google Account, create a channel in YouTube, then upload a video through YouTube Studio. To livestream, enable live streaming and choose a phone, webcam, encoder, or console route that fits what you want to show. You can begin with equipment you already own; the main extra step is checking live-stream eligibility before planning a broadcast.
Create your YouTube channel
A Google Account lets you watch, like, and subscribe, but you need a YouTube channel to upload videos, comment, or create playlists.
As an Amazon Associate I earn from qualifying purchases.
- Sign in to YouTube with your Google Account.
- Open Settings and go to the channel-management area.
- Choose the option to create a channel, then follow the prompts to choose its name and handle.
Personal channel or Brand Account?
A personal channel is managed by one person. If you want a different public-facing name or need multiple managers or owners, a Brand Account may be the better fit. A supervised account may not be able to create a channel.
See YouTube Help: Create a YouTube channel for the current setup steps and account-specific details.

Upload and publish your first video
Uploading brings a file into YouTube; publishing makes it available to viewers. You can upload privately or as unlisted, review it, and publish later, or schedule a publication time.
- In YouTube Studio, select Create → Upload videos.
- Select a video file from your device. YouTube does not accept a raw audio file as a video upload; combine audio with an image in video-editing software and export a video file first.
- Add the title and description, choose a thumbnail, and optionally add the video to a playlist.
- Set the audience designation, including whether the video is made for kids, and apply an age restriction if appropriate.
- Choose the visibility setting: private, unlisted, or public. You can also schedule the video to become public later.
- Allow processing to finish. YouTube processes the video up to the highest resolution available from the uploaded file.
YouTube Help says a creator can upload up to 15 videos at a time, though daily upload limits also apply. See YouTube Help: Upload videos for details.
Record a video or choose a livestream route
For a recorded upload, a phone can record through its camera app and upload through the YouTube app. On a computer, YouTube says you need separate software to record and save a video file; it does not provide a computer webcam recording feature.

| Computer webcam | Straightforward talking-head streams | Computer, webcam, and a microphone check | The simplest computer route; no encoder software is needed. |
| Encoder | Gameplay, screen sharing, external audio/video gear, or a more involved production | Streaming software or a hardware encoder; optionally an external camera and microphone | Offers more control but adds configuration and testing. |

YouTube Help’s live-streaming advice is that “You do not need expensive equipment, what you have at hand will do.” Consider a webcam or USB microphone only if your current setup does not give you the framing or sound you want.
See YouTube Help: Get started with live streaming and YouTube Help: Live streaming encoder settings for route details.
Check livestream eligibility before scheduling
YouTube’s stated general livestream requirements include a verified channel, no livestream restriction in the previous 90 days, and a streamer who is at least 16 years old. YouTube also describes special rules for livestreams featuring 13–15-year-olds who are not visibly accompanied by an adult. Live content remains subject to YouTube’s Community Guidelines and Terms of Service.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minute2Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errors3Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitchesFirst-time live-stream activation can take up to 24 hours, so enable it before the day you intend to broadcast. Mobile livestreaming has separate requirements; consult YouTube’s current mobile guidance rather than assuming that meeting the general conditions alone guarantees access from a phone.

Go live with a computer webcam
- Enable livestreaming on your channel and wait for activation if it is your first time.
- In YouTube, open Go Live and choose Webcam.
- Enter the stream title and description, then choose a privacy setting.
- Select the webcam and microphone you plan to use. Check framing and listen for clear audio before starting.
- Start the stream when the preview and settings are correct.
YouTube says streams shorter than 12 hours are automatically archived. See YouTube Help: Go live with a webcam for current interface details.
Prepare an encoder stream and test it
Encoder streaming is useful when you need to capture a game or screen, combine multiple inputs, or use external audio/video equipment. The exact controls depend on the software or hardware encoder you choose, so use its current setup guide alongside YouTube’s encoder instructions.
- Check the event preview before going live and confirm the event is visible from your channel or watch page.
- Check the stream on a mobile device as well as the production computer.
- Monitor both picture and sound; a visible preview does not guarantee that the microphone is working or balanced.
- Test the connection and equipment before a planned broadcast, not at its scheduled start time.
- YouTube recommends upload bandwidth with 20% headroom above the combined stream bitrate, including primary and backup streams where applicable.
That bandwidth recommendation is a margin above the stream’s total bitrate, not a target bitrate setting. Use the encoder guidance for the settings supported by your chosen resolution and frame rate. YouTube’s checklist is at YouTube Help: Live streaming tips.

Check its visibility setting in YouTube Studio. Private and unlisted videos are not publicly discoverable in the same way as public videos; a scheduled upload is not public until its scheduled time. Also confirm processing has completed for the resolution you expect.

The stream starts but the picture or sound is missing
Recheck the selected webcam, microphone, or encoder input and inspect the preview. Confirm the event is visible from the channel or watch page, then monitor it on a second device. For encoder streams, test the connection and leave the recommended upload-bandwidth headroom above the combined bitrate.
The stream is unstable
Check whether upload bandwidth is sufficient for the full combined bitrate, including any backup stream, with the recommended 20% margin. Test the network and production setup before the event; reduce the load or simplify the production if the connection cannot sustain it.
