To make captions selectable in a YouTube Live player, they must reach YouTube through a supported live-caption route. A caption file on your computer—or text placed over the video in OBS—does not by itself create a closed-caption track. For a prerecorded cartoon playlist, configure the playlist’s video and audio separately from the caption source, then test the live player before relying on it.
What counts as closed captions on a live stream?
YouTube defines closed captions as a visual display of a program’s audio and says captions must be sent to YouTube for a live stream. A text graphic added to the OBS picture may be visible to viewers, but it is not the same as a selectable closed-caption track. Likewise, having an SRT or VTT file locally does not establish that its captions are being delivered to YouTube Live.

There are three documented live routes to consider: YouTube-generated automatic captions, captions embedded in the stream as EIA 608/CEA 708, or supported caption software sending captions to YouTube over HTTP. Choose and verify the route independently of how OBS plays the cartoon playlist.

Choose a live-caption route

Set up YouTube’s caption source
Option 1: YouTube automatic captions
- Open the stream’s settings in YouTube Live Control Room and inspect its Closed captions options.
- Select Automatic captions for that stream if the option is available and the stream meets YouTube’s documented conditions: English audio, normal latency, and no professional captioning available.
- Start the live stream and check the viewer-side captions control. Confirm that captions appear and follow the cartoon’s dialogue and other relevant audio.
Automatic recognition can be a practical route when eligible, but it depends on the audio being understandable to the captioning system. Do not treat an enabled setting as proof that captions are accurate; inspect the actual viewer experience.

Option 2: Embedded 608/708 captions
- In YouTube Live Control Room, enable Closed captions for the stream, choose Embedded 608/708, and save.
- Configure the encoder in the workflow to output EIA 608/CEA 708 captions embedded in the stream. Selecting the YouTube option alone does not create or embed captions.
- Before relying on the setup, verify that captions arrive in the live player as a selectable track and that timing matches the program.
YouTube’s documented embedded route currently supports one caption track. If you need several languages, do not assume this route will carry multiple embedded tracks.
Option 3: Supported caption software over HTTP
YouTube also supports sending captions separately through compatible caption software over HTTP POSTs. Its live-caption help lists tools including Total Eclipse/AccuCap, Case CATalyst, CaptionMaker, and StreamText.Net. Confirm current software compatibility and setup with the vendor and YouTube before choosing one; the listing does not establish a particular OBS configuration.

YouTube documents a separate caption-ingestion-URL event workflow with a 30-second or 60-second broadcast delay. That delay applies to that workflow, not as a general delay setting for every caption route. The help page also lists version requirements for some software—AccuCap 6.0.0.5 or greater, Case CATalyst BCS version 14.52 or greater, and CaptionMaker version 5.22 or later. Check current compatibility before purchase or configuration because software versions can change.

OBS supplies the program picture and audio; the live-caption route supplies captions to YouTube. The available guidance here does not verify current OBS-specific playlist or looping controls, nor does it establish that OBS will pass a caption file to YouTube as live closed captions. Avoid relying on an assumed menu path or plugin behavior for either function.

- In your current OBS version, configure the cartoon playlist and confirm its playback and repeat behavior using current OBS documentation.
- Configure one of YouTube’s supported caption routes separately. For automatic captions, the captions are generated from the audio; for embedded captions, the encoder must actually output 608/708; for HTTP captions, use supported caption software.
- Run a private or otherwise suitable test stream and check the YouTube viewer’s captions control, caption timing, and what happens when the playlist advances or repeats.
- After the stream, inspect the archived video once processing is complete. YouTube creates VOD captions separately, and they may differ from the live captions.
Will an SRT or VTT file work?
A caption file associated with an uploaded YouTube video is not the same as a live caption feed. YouTube’s file-format guidance lists caption-file formats, including SCC, for uploaded videos; it does not establish that placing SRT or VTT content in OBS sends a closed-caption track during a live broadcast. For live delivery, use one of the documented live routes above and confirm the result in YouTube’s player.
Troubleshoot missing or incorrect captions

Copyright and playlist readiness
Before broadcasting cartoons, make sure you have the rights or permissions needed to stream both the visuals and audio. Captions do not grant permission to use the underlying program. YouTube’s copyright safety checklist can help you review the issue before going live.
