If your Restream YouTube stream has no sound, first find where the audio disappears: play the source file, watch the encoder’s audio meter or preview, check a local recording, inspect YouTube Live Control Room, then test playback on another device. If the source and local recording are silent, fix the source or its setup. If they have sound but YouTube does not, check the outgoing audio track, YouTube’s ingestion messages, and the connection. If only one viewer or device is silent, check its playback settings.
First identify where the sound disappears
“Pre-recorded video” can mean a video uploaded and scheduled in Restream or a media file played through an external encoder such as OBS. The checks below apply to either workflow, but exact controls differ. The available Restream guidance covers encoder-stream audio; it does not establish specific upload, container, codec, or scheduling requirements for Restream’s separate pre-recorded-event feature.

- Play the source file. Confirm it has audible sound in a local media player, and note whether the problem affects the whole file or only certain sections.
- Check the encoder while the video plays. Look for an audio meter moving or listen to the encoder preview. Confirm the intended source is selected, enabled, unmuted, and routed to the track being sent.
- Make a local recording of the encoder output. Play it back. Restream recommends comparing the local recording with the outgoing stream; this helps distinguish a source or encoder problem from a delivery or platform problem.
- Inspect YouTube Live Control Room. Check the event’s preview and health or error messages for audio warnings.
- Test playback on another device or browser. If other viewers can hear the stream, or desktop playback works while mobile does not, investigate the affected player or device before changing the encoder.
Write down what you find at each point. The first point where sound is missing is usually the stage to troubleshoot.

Check the file and selected source
- Play the same file outside Restream or the encoder. If it is silent there too, the issue is in the file or playback setup, not YouTube ingestion.
- If you use an encoder, make sure its media source is playing and that the correct audio device or source is selected. Check that it is not muted and that its audio is routed to the stream’s outgoing track.
- Watch the audio meter as the video plays. A moving meter shows that the encoder is receiving audio; it does not by itself prove that the audio is assigned to the track sent to YouTube.
- If the operating system or encoder offers multiple audio devices or tracks, verify that the active one is the one carrying the video’s sound.
If the source itself is silent, use a known-good local playback setup to determine whether the file or the player is responsible. Do not assume a microphone or cable is the cause when the audio is meant to come from a prerecorded file.

If the local recording has sound but YouTube does not
When the encoder preview and its local recording contain audio, shift attention to the outgoing track, delivery, and YouTube’s handling of the stream. A local recording with sound does not rule out a track-routing problem: the archive and outgoing stream can use different track selections.
Read YouTube’s ingestion message
Open the event in YouTube Live Control Room and read the stream health or error message. YouTube’s documented audio diagnostics include no audio, more than one audio stream, an unsupported audio codec, and an incorrect sample rate. For a missing-audio message, YouTube notes that some encoders have a checkbox to turn audio on; it also advises supplying only one audio stream.

Correct the specific condition reported rather than changing settings at random. If YouTube reports multiple audio streams, check the encoder’s output configuration. If it reports no audio, verify that audio is enabled and that the correct track is being sent. If it reports an unsupported codec or sample rate, compare the encoder’s output settings with the recommendations below.
Check audio format settings when your encoder exposes them
Restream’s YouTube setup guide lists AAC or MP3 audio, with a recommended audio bitrate of 128 Kbps for stereo or 384 Kbps for 5.1 surround. It lists 44.1 kHz for stereo or 48 kHz for 5.1. These are guide recommendations, not a guarantee that every encoder has identical controls or labels. Use the setting appropriate to your audio layout and the warning YouTube reports.

- For a stereo stream, check for one stereo audio output and the guide’s stereo codec, bitrate, and sample-rate recommendations.
- For 5.1 surround, check that the encoder is actually configured for 5.1 before using the guide’s 5.1 recommendations.
- If you change a setting, make a short test and confirm the new preview and ingestion status before relying on it for an event.
Consider a platform mute only when there is evidence
Restream notes that some platforms can mute content after detecting copyright issues. This is one possible explanation when an encoder’s local recording has sound but the platform playback does not; it is not a default diagnosis. Check YouTube’s event messages and any applicable copyright notices before treating muting as the cause. Make sure you have the rights needed to stream the music, video, and other material in the recording.
If the encoder and local recording sound good, test delivery and preview
If the encoder preview and local archive both sound healthy but YouTube’s preview or stream does not, check the outbound connection and the event’s ingestion status. YouTube recommends checking the look and sound directly in the encoder; when those are healthy, test the outbound internet connection. If encoder output quality is poor, investigate the audio and video sources, encoder errors, and CPU load as well as the local archive.

For a planned stream, YouTube advises checking the Live Control Room preview before starting and continuously monitoring audio and video during the stream. If audio fails after going live, compare the encoder meter, a new local recording, and the Live Control Room message again: that tells you whether the fault has moved or is limited to YouTube’s incoming stream.

If only a viewer, browser, or mobile device is silent
Check playback settings first
- Raise the YouTube player volume and check that the player is not muted.
- Check the browser tab, browser, and device sound settings, including any selected output device or connected headphones.
- Restart the browser or device if its audio remains stuck, then test the same stream again.
If desktop works but mobile does not
YouTube documents that stereo audio with poor mono compatibility can sound degraded or become muted when a mobile device converts it to mono. If desktop playback works but mobile playback does not, investigate phase and mono compatibility in the audio mix rather than assuming the video file has no audio. Test the mix in mono and correct any phase issue in the source or encoder before streaming again.
