YouTube’s 12-hour warning is about archiving, not a documented automatic cutoff for the live broadcast. YouTube says a stream longer than 12 hours may not be captured at all. If you need a story stream to continue around the clock, use a stream source that stays online—such as OBS running on a powered, connected computer—or a cloud service that loops uploaded videos. Plan separately for dropped connections and for keeping a replay.
What happens when a YouTube livestream passes 12 hours?
YouTube Help says streams shorter than 12 hours can be automatically archived, but a stream exceeding 12 hours “may not be captured at all.” That is a warning about whether YouTube saves the stream, not a statement that YouTube automatically ends the live signal at hour 12.

There is a separate viewer issue: DVR rewind may be limited or unavailable on very long streams, and behavior can vary by device or client. An older OBS Forums guide published in 2015 described different rewind limits by latency mode, but those detailed figures are not established by the current official guidance cited here. Do not build a plan around a guaranteed rewind duration.

Choose how the stream will stay live
The main practical choice is between encoding from a computer you keep running and having a cloud service play uploaded content. Neither option changes YouTube’s archive caveat. Decide whether your priority is an uninterrupted live event, distinct replay chapters, or both.

Set up a local OBS stream to YouTube
This path is suitable when you can leave an encoder computer operating and monitor it. The exact interface labels can change with OBS and YouTube updates, so confirm the current YouTube Studio live-control workflow on your account.
- Confirm eligibility and rights. Check that the channel can livestream and that you have the rights to use the story, narration, music, illustrations and other material in both the live stream and any replay. YouTube lists copyright matches and policy violations among reasons a livestream can be restricted.
- Create the live event in YouTube Studio. Open YouTube Studio and create or schedule a live stream. Set the audience accurately, including whether the content is made for kids. Copy the stream key from the live-control setup; treat it as a password and do not share it publicly.
- Connect OBS. In OBS, open Settings → Stream, choose YouTube as the service, and connect the account or enter the stream key, depending on the current connection method shown in OBS. Verify the destination and event before starting the encoder.
- Add the story source. Add the prerecorded video as a media source and configure playback to loop if you want the same recording to repeat. If using a playlist, test the order, transitions and behavior at the end of the last item before leaving the stream unattended.
- Set output based on the source and connection. Choose a resolution and frame rate appropriate to the recording, and use an encoder bitrate and keyframe interval supported by YouTube’s current live-stream recommendations and by your upload connection. The cited sources do not establish a universal bitrate, keyframe value or minimum PC specification for this use case, so do not treat a guessed setting as a reliable prescription.
- Test before the long run. Start an unlisted test if appropriate, check YouTube’s stream-health indicators, confirm audio and video, and observe a full loop. Test what happens after the network briefly drops or OBS is stopped; the cited sources do not guarantee automatic recovery for a local setup.
- Protect the replay separately. Enable a local recording in OBS and confirm that it is being saved to storage with enough available space. YouTube recommends a local archive backup because a stream longer than 12 hours may not be captured.
- Keep the setup supervised and recoverable. Prevent sleep, ensure the computer has reliable power and internet, and arrange a way to notice a stopped encoder or dropped stream. Keep the stream key private. Have a person or tested process ready to restart the encoder and verify the YouTube event if it fails.
Plan for kids’ content and YouTube restrictions
If the stream is made for kids, YouTube disables or restricts several features: live chat and chat replay, comments on stream archives and upcoming streams, reminder notifications, and personalized ads on live streams and Premieres. Contextual ads may still appear. Set the audience designation to match the content; do not choose a different setting to retain features.

Before going live, confirm account eligibility and the rights to stream the story and related audio or visuals. YouTube’s restrictions guidance identifies copyright-related issues and policy violations as possible reasons for restrictions, and says a channel with an active live restriction may not use another channel to get around it. Livestreams featuring minors also require attention to YouTube’s safeguards.

Keep the replay if the live event runs longer than 12 hours
If the archive is important, do not rely on one YouTube broadcast longer than 12 hours to produce a complete replay. Record locally and check that the file opens and contains audio before deleting or replacing it. If separate replay chapters matter more than one continuous broadcast event, shorter sessions are an alternative to consider; the schedule and interruption trade-offs depend on the channel’s needs.

Troubleshooting a stream that stops or has no replay
- The live signal ends unexpectedly: Check whether the encoder computer slept, lost power or internet, or OBS stopped. Restore the local setup and reconnect to the intended YouTube event; if the channel has an active live restriction, do not try to bypass it through another channel.
- The stream is live but viewers cannot rewind far: Long-stream DVR rewind can be limited or unavailable, and behavior can differ by device. Do not assume viewers can rewind to the beginning; make a separate recording if that access matters.
- No complete YouTube archive appears: A stream exceeding 12 hours may not be captured. Check for the local OBS recording rather than assuming YouTube will create a full replay.
- YouTube reports a restriction or copyright issue: Review the account notice and confirm rights for all story, music and visual elements. Do not evade an active restriction by switching channels.
- Kids’ stream features are missing: Chat, comments, reminders and personalized ads are among the features restricted for made-for-kids content. Verify the audience setting is accurate rather than changing it to restore those features.
